Buffing and Waxing Boat Gelcoat to Remove Oxidation [Pro Tips]

Getting oxidation of of boat gelcoat and returning it to like new gloss is a three step process. First, we need to buff the boat with a wool pad and compound to remove oxidation. Second, once the oxidation is gone we need to polish the boat with a synthetic pad and a polish to get the boat as glossy as possible. Finally, it is time to wax. Waxing is important to protect the boat. However, it is the least important of these three steps! Focus on doing a great job of compounding and polishing and you will get great results! If you have any questions after watching the video just leave them below in the comments and Ill get back to you. Brian
Products I recommend using:
Presta Super Cut Compound
Presta Chroma 1500 polish
Presta White Wool Pad
Presta Green Synthetic Wool Pad
Farleca or Colonite Wax
Makita 9237 Buffer

Hi Brian - I followed your instructions pretty much to the letter and got great results. Had some oxidation starting on the hull of my 23-ft navy blue Sea Hunt. Your three step process worked wonders. Threatening to shave in the morning in the shimmer of the finished glossy hull. End step I used Collinite wax which produced excellent results. Only thing that I did different was drizzle a wee bit of Baby Oil on the pad for the polishing step [advice from a friend]. Thanks again. Joe

Thanks for your clear & concise presentation. After watching I purchased some Presta Supercut compound, Presta Ultra cutting creme (couldn’t find the chroma you used) & Collinite 476 super coat wax. I’m using it on a fiber glass Freightliner truck cab that is/was chalky. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I previously tried to use my car polishing equipment and wasn’t getting the finish I wanted. I looked on KZread and found you. (I would never have used anything this aggressive - but glad I took your advice). Thanks again.

Sportfishing Boats this question is for my bathtub, I have a well and high iron levels so the tub was stained, I got the stains out, I guess I over scoured it, it doesn’t shine anymore, I was wondering if I could do the first two steps to get the shine back and forget the wax because of bathing? Any thoughts?

Great Video! I liked and subscribed. Two quick questions about the process: 1) I assume I should clean the boat before cutting....is there a good effective way to do this in a Winter storage building without access to water from a hose? 2) In the past when I have attempted all this, there seems to be a chalky residue on the gelcoat after cutting.....should this be cleaned off before polishing? Again, any recommendations on how to do this, again without access to water? Thanks so much!

Followed your steps, used Presta products. The polish step is giving me issues. When I use the SuperCut compound with Presta pad and makita 1500 rpm, I get a very nice gloss, and the surface is very slippery. Once I use the Presta Ultra polish with associated presta pad at 1500 rpm, The surface loses maybe 5% of its gloss, but hte apparent defect I hate is that the surface is less slippery, less smooth to the touch. That doesn't make sense to me. It's almost as if the polish is damaging the surface. I'm honestly thinking about skipping the polish step and going straight to wax, but I know I shouldn't. I must be doing something wrong. But what? Any insight is appreciated. Great video BTW.

You forgot to let the folks know at what speed should the polisher be at. To cut I’d say 1500 Polish 1000. Also how much working time on each step. I know it depends on the polishes/compounds.

I spent the better part of the weekend removing oxidation off of my boat. Used all recommended Presta products (Super cut, polish, pads). Initial results looked great. I came back the next day to wax and alot of the oxidation is back. What did I do wrong? What should I do now? Thx

Great presentations! Gonna go get me a Makita 9237, Presta Compound, pads, polisher and good quality wax to bring my Bayliner 2005 195 Classic Bowrider up to shine : ) I am in Nogales, Az and use our family boat in fresh water Lake Patagonia. I will let you know how your instruction goes with my abilities.....back soon.

Step 1 - shows a black buffing pad being used with the super cut. Step 2 - shows a the green buffing pad being used for the polish. Step 3 - does not show which buffing pad to use with the wax. In the written directions it doesn’t list the black buffing pad and only lists a green and white buffing pad. Do I need the black buffing pad to do the job? Thank you!

What type of cutting pads and polishing pads do you use? I’m buying a horribly sunburnt and oxidized fishing boat. I want to restore the top side to at least acceptable. BTW…I’m on a southwest flight between Raleigh and Baltimore. I live in Columbus ohio and the boat is at Lake Cumberland KY.

Hello from the Puget Sound in Washington. We recently had a fire outside our home that damaged our sailboat. One of the things my husband is trying to do now is restore the aluminum mast to the regular "color." It suffered high heat and smoke damage. Looking for a no-fail product to clean up the aluminum. Thanks for any help you can offer. (Also, thank you for the buffing and gel coat info on this video and the other one. We hope to be able to use that info too!)

Hi question for you. Last season I followed your steps using all of your suggested tools and chemicals, and it worked well! I was running low on time and wasn’t able to remove all of the oxidation. Question is, will it hurt my gel coat to use the presta compound a second time, followed by presta polish and wax? Just want to make sure I won’t damage my gel coat. Appreciate the help.

Two questions. 1. Do you wash and dry the boat after compounding? Same after polishing. 2. Any temperature restrictions for the compounding and polishing? Thanks Greg. McDonough Ga
