    When you think about it, from just two West Coast bands, Buffalo Springfield and Byrds, at least seven great singer-songwriters emerged: Clark, Crosby, Furray, Hillman, McGuinn, Stills and Young (plus later additions like Parsons and Messina)! They were supergroups but nobody was aware of the fact then.

    Love the Buffalo Springfield. They and the Byrds are the closest we got to an "American Beatles." If only both bands didn't have such personality clashes imagine what they could have achieved between Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and Richie Furay in one and Gene Clark, Jim McGuinn, David Crosby, and Chris Hillman in the other. Incredible roster of talents!

    Love, love, love the Buffalo Springfield. Have been a fan since 1967. I “discovered” them via an article in “16 Magazine” where Peter Tork of the Monkees said he was a friend of Stephen’s and he highly recommended the band. I bought their second album and I was blown away. I bought their first album, too, and eventually their third and final album. I was thrilled when the box set came out. I never saw the Springfield live. I was hoping for a reunion after Stephen, Neil, and Richie did a few gigs together back in 2010 but alas, it never happened. I saw CSNY many times and Richie Furay, too. I’ve met Richie several times. One of the nicest celebs I’ve ever met. Really enjoyed this video and I’m looking forward to your other Buffalo Springfield videos, too.

    Thank you, Jilly. The turntable is a Denon DP-7F. I bought this in about 1992 and I like that it is a direct drive with fully automatic functions. The auto function buttons have separate start and stop buttons. The others are for the lifter, repeat, record size, speed, and power. I'm not an audiophile so my equipment is midrange stuff, at least is was when I bought it. I like that all the functions are on the outside of the dust cover. The Byrds helped them get their first gigs and loaned them equipment. At some point they approached Chris Hillman and Jim (later Roger) McGuinn about managing them. Greene and Stone threatened their first manager, Dickie Davis, in the back of a limo. They weren't the best producers, which is why Stills and Ahmet Ertegun produced 'For What It's worth'.

    According to Stills, if the producers thought a song was too long, they said, Play it faster. They didn't have any real respect for the material. The other problem was their inability to get a decent bass sound, which was a big part of their live act. Stills said he and Young looked at each other and said, We better learn how to record this stuff ourselves. Which they did, but not in time to save the Springfield.

    I have that CD, and I think it's pretty wonderful, although it's obviously a cheap piece of work. Everything by this band is worth getting. The double LP best-of has the extended version of "Bluebird", which is the way I first heard them, tripping to the radio while the DJ was taking a leak. 😄

    Best B.S. album by far, despite the terrible mix . The mono mix is much better. Neil's remix of it a few years back improved it as much as possible. The original, without For What It's Worth is the best version. FWIW should have been on the next LP. Moby Grape's classic 1st is reminiscent of this album

    Neil was a control freak about the Springfield's output. A friend/former co-worker worked at Rhino when they finally put out four disc box set. It took literally years for Rhino to get Neil's approval, and even then he wanted control of the release. So you buy the box, but you do NOT get all the tracks from "Last Time Around" because Neil had quit the band -again - and decided those tracks were not 'real' Springfield material. Right. Thanks Neil for another disservice to the fans. There was a bootleg "Stampede" that supposedly had tracks with one of Neil's replacements, Doug Hastings (previously with the Daily Flash and afterwards Rhinoceros). And I believe that when the Springfield played Monterey Neil had quit the band (for the first time?) and David Crosby appeared with Springfield.

    Great episode. I had thought of that album as the "For What Its Worth" album for so long I had no idea that song was not on the original release. That song was the first song that I noticed as a kid using natural harmonics on the guitar (unison with the chords) outside of jazz and classical guitar. Do you have any idea if that technique had been recorded before?

  • @popgoesthe60s52

    @popgoesthe60s52

    The first song that comes to mind is George Harrison's solo on Nowhere Man, where he hits the harmonic as the closing note, though that's the only harmonic in the solo. I can't think on any that are exclusively harmonics in pop or rock at that time.

  • @andrewblackard3369

    @@popgoesthe60s52 Good catch. I wonder where Harrison got the idea. The jazz guitarist Lenny Breau attributed that technique to Chet Atkins. But then Chet attributes it to Django Reinhart. I don't know if Steve Howe from Yes got it from those guys or the Brazilian classical composer Heitor Villa-Lobos where I suspect he got that movable chord technique that he used in Wurm.

    Neil was sufficiently underwhelmed by his vocals that on his first solo album he mixed his vocals down quite a bit. I bought the album when it came out and eard it that way. Years later, a housemate had the remixed version with the vocals mixed back up front, and almost did not recognize it.

    Neil Young’s voice wasn’t commercial enough. Great observation. Personally I put Young in the same category as Bob Dylan in that they are both fantastic song writers but their singing voices are not their greatest asset. People I know either love or hate them. I’m middle of the road, some songs only they can pull off and sounds wrong when covered by others. Some songs are finger nails on a chalkboard to me. They have earned their spot in music history and deservedly so. But now and then I have to skip a track.
