    Buffalo is finishing second last in the division. Red Wings and Senators both have had decent offseason (I don't think the Sens are huge winners but they addressed positional needs and found decent options imo) but you look at a team like Buffalo who is making these weird moves throughout their forward core and blueline and banking on two very inexperienced goalies who in fact Sabres fans thought were the next Marty Brodeur and Dominik Hasek along with a dinosaur who's a shell of his former self. Laugh at the Sens all you want (and I get why people do), but we look like a respectable franchise when you compare us to a team like the Buffalo Sabres. Their front office and ownership CLEARLY have no direction and no idea whatever the fuck their doing. Doing shit like this keeps teams in the cellar, while you have teams like Ottawa, Detroit, and Montreal having a direction and an identity they want to play. Not to mention the top 4 who are in the division who are still playing damn good hockey. Sickening bullshit from Buffalo

    @@HotTakeHockey don’t love it. Think it’s a high price tag and might screw us when trying to get a top 6 forward this offseason. But Ruff got brought in and clearly said to KA “revamp the bottom 6 with speed, physicality, for check and defensive players”. And we were the worst in face offs and upgraded there. It helped round out our bottom six and yes it cost savoie but in reality he wasn’t helping out the next two years. Our top six is Thompson tuch Quinn cozen and peterka with one missing piece. Benson could slide in if he has a good offseason but who knows. You have 4-5 prospects to fill that kulich ostland Rosen Konsta(now) and let alone whalberg who might push to be one of the best out of the bunch. I don’t love the trade but hear me out it’s not as bad as you guys are making it. If we go for a top 6 it makes sense. Again I don’t love the move but big picture…”okayyyyyy”

    @@bjarczyk I’m a Sabres fan and you’re nuts if you think the Sabres are even close to dominating Toronto in the near future. Hell, they’re barely competing with Ottawa and Detroit. Also, I’ve seen your comment about McLeod being the second fastest skater in the league etc. what McLeod brings to the table isn’t the issue with the trade, it’s the asset management that KA is showing, especially with this offseason in particular. On top of that, he’s been preaching this offseason about getting harder to play against, and then his biggest move so far is trading your best, or at the very least one of your best prospects for a guy who is known for being soft AKA the complete opposite of what you’ve been preaching that the team needs.

  • @ryanthaeditor

    Hey hardcore Oilers guy here, think we won this trade in terms of raw potential but McLeod is a fast skating defensive forward who gives er on the pk and can read well. His two knocks are he doesn’t go hard to the inside and I’ve watched him pass away many good shots on days wheee his confidence isn’t up. At his best when he’s on his game his shot can convert and he flies. I hope you guys get that version. Ty Tullio has a good game, but yeah prospect vs prospect you ain’t ending up with the same potential. Savoie is from 15 min outside of Edmonton, Same suburb as Messier, it’s always good to have a home team player or two, he and our goalie got that goin Anyhow great rant and hope Sabres get in the yoffs next season the fans deserve it

    Sabres fan here. I’ve been an Adams supporter for his tenure, understanding patience and building up the prospect pool is what is/was needed, especially after watching Tim Murray and Jason Botteril’s runs as GM. This move, the Malenstyn move and freeing up a ton of cap space by buying skinner out and then not spending any money during FA, have put me on the other side. This is absolutely brutal. There are so many other prospects you could have made this move for not named Savoie or Kulich if Macleod was the guy they were wanting. Just fucking brutal.

    Oilers fan here. McLeod is a solid player. Great on the PK, 2nd fastest skater on the Oilers. Battles hard and his analytics is actually really good considering he never plays with McDavid or Leon in offensive situations. We also gave another decent prospect. Both teams get what they need. Most oiler fans think this trade was bitter sweet. We lose a solid player because of cap problems, but Savoie gets to come back home to Edmonton and play with his big brother. You’ll end up liking McLeod, he definitely makes your team better now.

    Agreed....After all the armchair GM's calm down, they will see that this deal is not that bad. McLeod is a young bonafide NHL player with plenty of up swing. In the last couple of years he's gained tremendous playoff experience playing with the best players. He is super fast, is responsible defensibly, can score and he is ready now. He is a top 6 player in which the Oilers did not have room for. He will thrive in Buffalo. All Buffalo did was move their prospect pool forward a few years with a guaranteed NHL player. Buffalo needs to gain traction now, not in a few years and that is what this accomplished. I strongly believe the fans of buffalo will get their lightbulb moment on how good he is soon after the season starts. They are really clouding their judgement with Mcleods current level and more so his potential.

    As someone who has actually been following Matt Savoie and the Sabres prospects, I’m gonna temper expectations for him a bit. Sav is projected to be a second line winger, and has little to no experience going up against adults as we are talking here. Yes he’s really good in the WHL, and yes, Scouts state that he is the best skater on the ice whenever he’s on it, consistently being the first thing that scouts have said since day 1. And btw yes, he has improved greatly since he was first drafted in 2022. The issues that come up are that he’s 5’9 in a league where people seem to be growing all the time. So now he’s currently in a situation where he’s going to have to work harder than other players to get similar or the projected results for him. The next biggest issue going against him is he has a fairly long history of injuries, hence why he was sent back to the WHL btw which has affected his progress and has caused prospects like Ostlund and Kulich to pass him in skill. Adding in their experience against adults, something Sav doesn’t have right now. The next biggest thing Sav has going against him is the Sabres newest addition to their prospect pool, Konsta Helenius. A guy who is probably more NHL ready then a lot of the other prospects in the system rn, has experience playing against adults, reports have been similar to Reinhart, and is expected to be ready to join the team next year. Where Sav would be ready at the same time, but 1 year to develop to be ready as opposed to 3. Not saying Sav isn’t going to be good mind you, just keep in mind that the reasons for this make sense. Was it an overpay? Potentially. But having read up on some of the stats and circumstances with Ryan McCleod, we got a player from a team with a stacked center group who could potentially fill in holes in the lineup when injuries come in and is considered the 1st/2nd best skater in the league.

    Unfortunately for the Sabres, they can't attract desirable free agents because they've been losing for so long. As an Oilers fan I feel your pain. Going out and buying players sounds like the simple solution but not so much when you are at the bottom of the list for preferred destinations so overpaying will happen until the winning starts. The good news is Ryan McLeod will likely help the team get into the playoffs sooner than later. As for Savoie, obviously, I hope he meets every expectation but the kid needs work on his defensive game. Many times I've seen players who were can't miss prospects and offensive wizards in junior but couldn't carry their game to the NHL so I will hold off on jumping for joy until he's proven at the pro level. Whatever happens, no point being upset now because we are looking at a couple of years before we see if this deal is really unfair or not.

    I do think theres a difference with Ottawa acquiring Chychrun and Buffalo acquiring Byram. We traded Chychrun for picks to help push for the playoffs (though in hindsight it was a bad move) and Buffalo sent back Casey Middlestadt (their top scorer) for Byram. Ottawa had four left handed Dman (Brannstrom was one but he was a bottom pair guy), but Buffalo has four left handed Dmen that could easily play top 4 minutes. I think in terms of that they have a bigger issue than we had in terms of the handness on the blueline.

    Savoie has an injury history in a soft league and even got injured in training camp. The risk here is actually one EDMs side. If Savoie can stay healthy he’ll be a great player. But that’s a big if. He needs to adjust his game because he’s been playing against kids for 4 years. If he tries to dangle through people in the NHL he’s gonna fuckin die. Sabres prospect pool is still great. I’d give this trade a B… for the sabres and a A- for EDM. Could turn out great for the oilers… could also be a total bust if Savoie gets his head taken off. Wish him the best though, stay healthy bro.

    Super sports agents like Jeff Jackson see things differently than every day run of the mill over-used over employed good ole boys club GMs. Jackson wants this to be his team, top to bottom, before the new GM is hired. Evidently the GM role is easy as shit for Jackson. I wouldn't be surprised if Jackson pulls off one more absolute stunner block buster trade before the season starts. Maybe involving Darnell Nurse and 1 or 2 first rounders. Acquiring a top pairing D no one ever thought would jump ship from their current team to be with the cup or bust Oilers.

Sabres have 3 Centers ahead of Savoie in the System Kulich Ostlund and Helenius. Helenius has majorly impressed this week in Dev Camp. Alot of these players are just like Savoie with thier skill sets. You are all getting hyped just because of where Savoie was drafted. Hes he tore it up in the Dub but he hasnt done anything more than that. He is also becoming alot more injury prone which made him lose alot of ice time in prospect games. We got Kulich and Rosen almost on the cusp of making it we still got Helenius Ostlund and Wahlberg coming in the pipeline. Sabres cant wait for every prospect to make it someone or even a couple may still go.

They still have options incl LTIR Kane for the season. Thats all I got.. Thank you. I'm sorry I feel your pain but we're ecstatic about this deal.

    Another thing: This is not about lack of direction. Adams drafted a whole bunch of skilled centers because they are coveted by teams. This is how they will acquire experienced NHL players to push them over the top. A couple of bounce back years from Tage and Cozens + Lindy holding them accountable = playoffs. Oh ANOTHER thing: Mcleod scored 3 goals in the Stanley Cup Finals against Florida.

    20+ year exclusive Sabres fan here. Never complain. Have been optimistic and have supported Adams this whole time. This trade ended that. I'm furious and disheartened. Also fell in love with the Oilers this past season. First team outside the Sabres I can call myself a fan of. With Skinner and Savoie heading there, I'm going to have to follow them going forward. What will be telling is whose games I watch more of this coming season. It's incredibly frustrating, because I've been happy with all the moves to rebuild our bottom 6 this offseason (Sabres) - but this just killed me. I was hoping for a Benson and/or Krebs and/or Pick(s) trade for an experienced top line guy if we made another move. Lafferty or Krebs could be our 3rd line C. I don't care how fast McLeod skates. We just loaded up on toughness and people who can play the PK, we did not need this. Fast skating and a 50% faceoff record last season isn't going to get us closer to a cup. Savoie coming up in next year or two would have. Done defending Adams.

  • @JIMpossible

    @JIMpossible

    9 күн бұрын

    Savoie coming up in next year or two would have put us closer to the Cup? How do you figure? Because the only way he's making the lineup is by taking the place of Thompson, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, Tuch, or Kulich. He's not built for the bottom 6. Savoie is way smaller than all those guys and has been injury prone. Sure he put up great numbers in juniors, but they're eerily similar to Kailer Yamamoto, another small guy who has done nothing of significance in the NHL. I want you to take a step back and seriously think about this for a few minutes. You've been a fan of the team for 20+ years. They traded one of their prospects, who has no guarantee will ever amount to anything in the NHL, and that's the hill you're going to die on?

  • @gootvansquid

    @gootvansquid

    @@JIMpossible As if another player can't move to third line lol. If Cozens doesn't pick up his game this year, he can play third line. He'd be 3rd line on a lot of other NHL teams already. Am I dying on a hill? Wasn't aware that's what my comment amounted to. So why do you choose a smaller player that hasn't had much success so far in the NHL compared to say, Daniel Briere or any of the many "smaller guys" who have had tons of success in the league? Silly argument there.

    I understand how this trade might look questionable at first glance, but you essentially answered your own question. Why would Buffalo make this trade? I can't believe for a minute that Kevin Adams is an inept GM who would trade a top prospect without a solid reason. Savoie is an unproven 5'9" center in the NHL, while in return, you're getting a 6'3" center with proven NHL experience. How many 5'9" centers dominate the league? Size down the middle is crucial. I think this is a smart trade, and Adams must have seen something in Savoie that he didn't like.
