Buffalo National River | Winter Canoeing in Northwest Arkansas (Steel Creek to Kyles Landing)

I’m back on the Buffalo River in Northwest Arkansas! This time with Josh from @theboundaryparadox for one of my favorite weekend trips. Cacheing our canoe and gear at the Steel Creek Ranger Station, we drove to Kyles Landing and hiked the Buffalo River Trail (BRT) back. We paddled to Horseshoe Bend and camped across from Hemmed-in Hollow. Winter on the Buffalo River is quiet and empty of human activity - the perfect weekend escape for me!
Trip Date: February 1 - February 3, 2024

It was so pretty! As much as I love the full foliage too, the lack of leaves made up for incredible views. Thanks for watching along!

Yea I was glad to catch it! We didn’t get in till late so when I setup the timelapse I wasn’t sure what all I’d be capturing with the movement of the sky. So that was a cool surprise. Glad you liked it!

It’s truly a gorgeous river! Yea I’ve always been fascinated by that old cabin structure. If I remember the history of it correctly, it was build in the later part of the 1800s. It’s so cool to imagine what life must have been like living in it! Very cool spot for a cabin.

Yea those rapids are fun! And they change so much depending on the water levels. Thanks! So glad you enjoy watching these! It really was a great balanced weekend trip. That tarp was fun for sure. Hey, also! I got one of those stick stoves you told me about. I meant to use it on this trip, but we ended up being a bit rushed that evening we got into camp and I didn’t end up getting to try it out. I’m really excited to use it! I’m sure you’ll start seeing it in the videos soon :) Thank you for watching these! I hope you enjoy the rest of the Utah trip!

It was sitting around 2.9ft at the Ponca gage. That’s about as low as I want to paddle it though. If you can catch it around 3.5ft a lot of those rapids are way more fun. A lot of them were just exposed at 2.9ft and made for some lining and dragging.
