The headlights work that way for a very good reason, if a car at night sees the two small headlights burning they might mistake it for a car at a further distance instead of a bike that is really freaking close. By having a single headlight operating at a time it makes it simple to tell that it's a bike at night making it less likely you become road pizza.

While giving my buddy the benefit of my biking experience going back 45 yrs (gosh-damn that dates me, uh?) for an alternative to his FL streetglide that was lighter, less intimidating to him with his minimal experience to 'learn' how to become a competent rider on, I came across an '06 Buell Ulysses For Sale that hit my funny/happy-bone nerve in the bestest-way, as the absolutely BEST all-around fun bike to have. If I could still ride I'd grab-it inna heartbeat, but the next-best would be to turn him onto it. The more I look at, watch reviews and listen to/read rider's comments about their 06-09 Buells, especially the XB12X's, the more they grow on me. I like everything about them, like their great American V-twin heritage, the masterful, deft engineering that Erik Buell put into making a world-class American muscle sport/cruiser air-cooled pushrod Hell-Raiser with bottom-end grunt and corner-carving style. Equally at home on the interstate, patchworked asphalt highways, small-town backroads and byways, fire-roads, high-plains gravel tracks, mountain canyon and county roads, hillsides and pastures and forest trails (at least not the too-vicious, gnarly gully-washers and goat-tracks, though perfectly up to crossing 24" 'shallow' streams and throwing mud and stones with the best dual-purpose/offroaders out there, like medium-to-big Suzuki, Kaws, Hondas, BMW and Ducatis up to the same 1200 hvy-duty adventure class. Its a whole 'nother dimension, a different metaesthetic, another gosh-darn better-way, different configuration to put the power-to-the-ground & Get-R-Done in the traditional overpowering-with-finesse innovative American way, that the XB Buells excel at ~ which is their iconic, traditional legacy ~ even to their found, confounded and abandoned history of being wooed, encouraged, supported, then manipulated, exploited, sabotaged and dismissed by powerful money-interests when the corporate beancounters got out their red-pencils, didn't realize what a rare ahead-of-the-game jewel they had and utterly lost the plot ~ and the whole point of the thing ~ That is, designing, making and selling more smiles-per-miles with out-of-the-box thinking that liberated creative ideas enjoined with the intrepid human spirit, a tribute to zestful fun-loving enthusiasm and just-can't-keep-a-great-thing-down, rarin-to-go attaboy! style. These out-of-production XB's will still tag-along and keep up, go head-to-head with any/all Jap/German/Italian sportbike cruisers, especially making-up any distance lost on long straightaways thru the twisties, hammering up to about 120 mph with authority until they begin to run-out of steam ~ two-valves per naturally-aspirated air-cooled pistons can't feed air or dump the heat like inline-4 water-cooled engines. But than, its not just bout staying ahead, but making smiles and havin fun. Only 109 hp but up-to 87 ft/lbs. Incredible machines, practically bulletproof, low-maintenance, good mpg and reliable, with 6.9 travel-inches of fully adjustable motocross-heritage Showa front-and-aft suspensions, about 450 lbs wet, intensely flickable with short-wheelbase, tight-rake and low center-of-gravity, top-of-the-line competition perimeter single-rotor 6-piston front-brakes, proprietary Buell-blueprinted-and-engineered Sportster-derived fire-breathing Thunderhead engine that barks, grunts, snarls, burbles, snorts and roars. This bike will pull strong in the 1st four gears, absolutely loves to stand-up tall as it accelerates out of sweepers and tight corners, making it feel so efforless. And as they say, hp sells engines, but torque wins races. Goddamned HD management was el magnificat stupido to hang Buell out to dry like they did, taking-over Buell and then letting-it wither-and-die of neglect. They lost SO much expanded market reach, a broad customer-base and heritage credibility when they let-go what they had made in partnership with ~ a gung-ho American-made V-twin adventure-sport-flattrack-cafe racer/speedway cruiser with TT-attitude and hillclimb-spunk, that could compete head-to-head with the Jap 4/German/Italian lineup, providing even more-smiles-pure-miles and pure throttle-twist bliss. Dang I wish I could still ride ... Buell's are an American Icon legacy fer shure, Keep 'em InTheWind, Cheers!

Once you get one, your life will never be the same after. This is the first motorcycle I've ever owned where I've been hesitant to list it for sale. It just has such an exotic, sexy stance and the noise it makes is just not captured by cameras well. People stare in traffic, stare at gas stations, stare from the sidewalk. They walk up to you and ask questions, they compliment you every time you stop. I have a 2008 XB12R Firebolt, its the white with blue wheels. It is probably one of the very very few left that is in mint condition. No bodywork damage, no mechanical issues, no leaks, no fading or bent shit, no broken anything. It's literally almost in showroom condition and I just can't stop staring at it. I plan on selling it next spring because I want some other bikes but I know I will regret it the minute I sign the title over. I have videos up on my channel for those of you who are calling bullshit on the near-mint condition. For those of you trying to buy one of these, just go for the bigger engine option if possible. The 9 may rev a few hundred rpm higher but take it from me, the power delivery of the xb12 is just so addictive and that extra 10 horsepower is very helpful in putting sports cars and other bikes to shame. The torque is also just so amazing, you can go for a pass at 75mph on the interstate without dropping a gear, you're making lots of horsepower even in 5th gear at highway speeds and she just moves. Drop it into 3rd gear and just launch into orbit if you really need to. If you really need help, or you wanna talk about the XB's just hit me up, I can talk all day long about these bikes and my experiences.

@@duuhwinning6589 Since we are late to the party, they have a 7-8500 rpm redline so they rev really slow and only have a five speed transmission so they top out at about 140mph for an average rider. But they make so much torque through out the rev range, and corner real well. They are also much more forgiving for riders because of the torque to help you correct mistakes and bad lines and the suspension just absorbs bumps like a soft cushy cruiser. But carves corners like a SWC race bike. I would put a XB12 up against any 600cc bike.

Being 5' 7" on a good day, I had trouble with my XB12Ss as it was almost a bit too tall, in spite of changing the seat. I am in the market for a used CG, great writeup, was spot-on in terms of how this bike handles. One word, stay away from the Dunlops; I had excellent luck with the Pirelli Scorpion S tires, they stick to the street very well so one can really lean into the turns.

Oh what the hell do we care about figures when this bike is the best Yin and Yang experience since that stone age moment when a bloke bolted an engine between two wheels for the very first time. All have exhaust and tune. The EBR is a powerhouse. Just got done doing a 1250 NHRS kit on my buddys 05 xb12s. If u guys ever do engine work I Highly recommend it. 1250 kit, cat 3 NHRS cams and ported xb heads. Back cut valves stock size. Bike has a pile of power and alot more snap thru the entire rev range. Works flawless with the preprogrammed D&D pipe IDS ecm. Liked it enough I will be doing the same to mine but with hammer impact 560 cams. Bike feels like it has 20 more HP thru the entire rev range. Well worth it. Also installed xb9 primary and chain on both the 09 and 05. Lil more pull off the line. Only sacrificed about 8mph up top. Wheelies like nobody's business. Well worth the time n money.

  • @starmanskye

David O Rodriguez; Its not an issue, generally. Kevlar HD drivebelts are pretty dang bulletproof, as long as gravel doesn't get wedged into the wheel-pulley causing it to punch-thru and weaken/chafe/rip the cords. The belt-guard looks well-designed to prevent that happening. I'm not too sure how age and UV sensitive they are, haven't heard of any issues. Replacing the belt isn't overly difficult, most riders should handle it fine, w/ several good youtube vids walking you thru it. For the precautionary obsessive, a spare should be carried as a matter-of-course on long/remote trips, along with the 6-or-so tools/sockets necessary, and a small screw/bottle jack to support the bike in axle-removal. Just keep an eye on em, you'll prob be fine ~ they are claimed to (and easily do) last 30k miles minimum.

That's not good you should fix your headlights to where only one burns at a time! The reason they are supposed to be that way is so car drivers can tell at night that you are riding a bike and are not a car further in the distance down the road.

@@starmanskye It most certainly is an issue. Some riders get up to 40K miles but I only got 12K miles. Could have had something to do with the speed bumps in London.

No. They are rock solid bikes. Ive had 4 of em. Just keep the battery terminals tight and go over stuff once in a while. They vibrate but thats the charm. I've had liter bikes for 18 years and my xb12s is my favorite bike to ride.

How actually good is the power of an xb12? I have soooo many reviews saying its kinda slow compared to SS bikes... yeah its not a 125hp R6 or 180hp R1 but They have around 100hp and good V2 Tq and its just over 400lbs it must go pretty good... find it hard to believe it dosent feel fast.

Ricky Jeffers just what i was hoping to hear, i rode harleys my whole life i sold my lowrider in 07 to buy Atvs for my son n i but hes 18 n im chaffing to get another bike but tierd of cruisers and choppers want something fast and handles plus love the looks of xb's. I like power so Now its is the 9s revie power or enough or shoot for the 12s with little less revs but more Tq., both r dirt cheap up here in maine 2700 to 3500 for nice 9s and 12s. I know the looking out window and scootin out early for work just to ride... Im lookin forward to that again.

Aaron Waltz it's a hard choice indeed... I'd get every single one if I could but opted for the Uly because I can take her off-road but not without sacrificing grunt and the cornering characteristics you get with these machines. Plus a good clean excuse to break away for a day or two to sleep under the stars in the middle of nowhere.

They make good power. Off the line or 0-80 the xb12s make plenty of power and hang with most bikes out there. About 90ftlbs torque. Not much past 115-120pmh but they get their quick. Yes it not an R1 but most bikes hp rating are based of dyno pulls on the crank not at the rear wheel. I've had liter bikes for 15 years and got into buells after riding one in the Mtns in Tennessee. Loved everything about it. I now have an EBR1190sx dean Adam's pipe ecm and 44 rear sprocket. Made 171 on the dyno. That bike is an animal! Out accelerates anything I've run agaisnt up to 140. Also have an 09 xb12s, dead Adam's exhaust and tune. Xb9 primary gear and chain. The XB bikes are still a modified sportster engine not like the rotax based EBRs. Bout 100hp and 90 ftlbs. They make plenty of useable power on the street. Light and handle awesome. Brakes are awesome as well. Lower speed city riding or tight curvey roads the XB series is one of the best handling bikes you'll ride. And with a lil work they can make even more power. Fun hooligan bikes and sound awesome. They dont pull on the big end but that's not what they wer intended for. Take a xb12 lighting for a spin, they are just fun bikes.
