Budget VS Expensive Wild Camping: Angle Tarn, English Lake District

Budget VS Expensive Wild Camping: Angle Tarn, English Lake District
In this video, Matt and I head out and demonstrate (albeit in a basic sense), that you don't need to spend a lot of money to get out and enjoy wild camping. We enjoy a few beers in the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, before heading up two thousand feet of ascent (with a 15.5 KG rucksack for myself - which was a killer). We pitch at Angle Tarn, overlooked by Esk Pike and enjoy an evening in our Great Outdoors.
(If you want to purchase an Olight torch - use this link and it helps us out and costs you nothing extra) :-)

Two nice blokes enjoying some beers in the great outdoors. No complaints here. But the video title and the intro suggest a "compare and contrast" exercise. If I was considering spending £30 or £800 on a tent there's nothing in the video that would help me make that decision. Ease of construction, weight, comfort, features. These are just a few things I would expect to be covered from a video that's titled and introduced in such a way. Not meant as a criticism, just an observation. Glad you enjoyed yourselves and got a taste of that freedom we've all been missing.

Fair enough mate, we just wanted to show it can be done with cheap gear and enjoyed just the same. Maybe a more in depth comparison for a future video. Thanks for watching 👍

Had to comment and subscribe. This year is the year I am wild camping, something clicked with me and I think it will give me back some of what I have lost in recent years in the outdoors. Looking to keep it local on a few fells nearby in the spring but assembling my budget gear over the winter. Your videos are an inspiration and the delivery is perfect. You are a true advocate for the hobby. All the best man. Stay safe.

That’s an amazing location! But think the walk would have killed me 🤣 it’s great to see you encouraging people to get out no matter the budget and having a good time.. I have probably spent about £200 for the entire kit for me and my son and we have already had one trip with memories to last a lifetime.. and I’m sure we will have many more to come, and as kit wears out or I find it’s too heavy I will replace as we go if needed.. keep up the awesome video’s mate 🍻

Well! When you parked by that little old bridge I knew exactly where you were - just near the main camp site where I took my now wife camping in 1979. We now live in Oz. Then the Old Dungeon Ghill - fantastic food and beer in there! Love Langdale. Think I'm becoming a sentimental old fart. I should come back for a visit but Bat flu has seen to that for this year. Thankyou both for a triffic few minutes. From a new subscriber. You've both done very well - carry on :)

Great video chaps! Can’t beat it can you. Fair play lugging that weight around! You’re right about the kit though. It’s great to be able to spend a bit more on kit and enjoy the benefits the price offers but in no way is it essential as you’ve demonstrated. Only done the lakes a couple of times, from Coniston to Keswick, setting up at sprinkling tarn. Absolutely beautiful. I’ve got a craving for that beer you were supping at the pub! Smashing spot and scenery. A wee river for a beer chiller is always an added bonus too. As you say, for not a lot of cash you can go to these stunning places in spring/summer. The more ££££ you spend then the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Winter? Well you know that’s when the extra ££££ matters. ATB👍

Great vids mate. I bought a Gelert Mongoose tent about 16 years ago for a very decent price. I used it for ages - even up in the mountains of Skye. I've moved on now but a great entry level tent that performed way above what I expected. Think the company has changed a lot since then though.

Thanks for the video. Good tip on not carrying too much weight up the slopes. Another good tipp could be that you don't need a tent at all with that kind of weather (and save 30 pound). The last tip: don't bring a 30 pound tent to a wintercamping trip.

I started cutting pack weight- it makes a huge difference. Don't need to go ultralight or ultra expensive cutting from 18kg down to 10kg pack weight made all the difference for me mainly by reducing the big 3 weight and using a water filter and carrying less water. Depends how far you are walking though, heavier pack is prob fine for shorter distances.
