    Great choices, as far as I know anyway! 😊 You asked for ideas, well one obvious one is upgrades from this system. Just by coincidence where I happen to be myself!😅 I look forward to this video next Wednesday 😎

    I prefer the sauce! Good speak Paul! I run a Rega P1+ at my summer home, with an upgraded AT VM95ML cartridge. Best combination in the price bracket that I could listen to at my HiFi-dealer (better then with that Project Phono-Stage) /ptr

    Hi Paul the Rega Planar 1 maybe the best sounding turntable possibly but that is lost with a vary basic cartridge and cables which are very poor. These type of cables are usually given as “Get you up an running “with many hi fi components. Whereas the Pro-Ject maximises its performance with decent cables and a better cartridge.

    AXA 25 doesn’t offer remote control. That could be a big issue for a lot of people. I picked one up refurbished direct from Cambridge via eBay for $129 US dollars! They do frequently have the AXA 35 available as well. Not a bad route. I love my AXA 25 driving a pair of NHT 1.5s on my desktop. It’s a very nice sounding amplifier with more than enough power for most people. Your TT recommendations were spot on, as expected.

    Thanks for all the info Paul, actually I bought on Summer a Planar 1 following your videos about best budget Turntable. Store wanted to sell me an Planar 1+, but after I checked reviews on your website I decide it about Planar 1, I bought also best budget Project pre-amp and headphones amplifier; I just had to ground the system to erase hum and I've loved how sounds. in case of a future upgrade for cartridge, what could you suggest? Thanks again for the help.

    Thank you Paul! Hoping you, & the community can lend a 'non - audiophile' a helping hand? (roll eyes!) My previous second hand set-up was a NAD 533 belt drive turntable | external Integrated amp, Trio KA3700 | Gale 3010 passive speakers; broadly speaking the sound when factoring in my budget & 'unrefined ear' was good, but I changed things in favour of convenience, with less wires, and a smaller footprint etc, however the sound is HUGELY disappointing! Current set-up; ATLP5X (From all I read pre-purchase, plus your comprehensive review, a good budget turntable) | Audio Pro C5 powered speaker which, when playing digital music is fine. SO, to diagnose and rectify the problem - should I be adding an external amp & revert back to passive speakers..... I'm at risk of entering quite a rabbit hole, please send help. Thanks, all advice welcome!

    Hi Paul, I was wondering if you could provide some advice as to what amplifier I should look to get for my setup - I'm willing to go the second hand route as I'd rather save the extra penny, since it's mostly going to be for recreational use every now and then. My budget would be somewhere between 100-200£, depending on if spending a little extra will be beneficial at all. Currently, I've got myself a second hand Numark PRO TT-1, with a headshell and some random stylus that came with it (I'm planning to eventually upgrade it to a cartridge style, like one of the Ortofon Concordes), but it seems to all be in working order. As for the speakers, I've got a pair of passive ELAC B5.2 Debut 2.0's, according to the specification these have a nominal impedance of 6-Ohms. I've got these speakers hooked up to a S.M.S.L SA300 desktop amp, and using the built-in DAC plugged in via USB/Bluetooth, it works great with these speakers. I've tried pairing it up with the turntable, but it seems to not have enough juice as I have to crank the volume quite high, which introduces a lot of noise. Granted, even though I do like a good sounding system, I'm not all that familiar with the technicalities, so do excuse me if anything that I've just said is incoherent. :^) Looking forward to hear what you have to say, thanks for the video!

    Hey! Maybe not necessarily related to this video. But I’ve been doing research to upgrade my old but gorgeous and unfortunately now broken Lenco L435 and I stumbled upon your channel. All of the channels I come across mention turntables like Pro-Ject and Fluance etc etc… But on Thorens turntable there is not much to be found. Why is that? Is it because of you don’t get as much bang for your buck with the entry level ones? The entry levels ones seem like reasonably priced and also good like turntables. But maybe I’m missing something why you don’t see so much about them? Thanks for answering I’m advance!

    The point of the strobe and fine speed adjust is of course that some turntables cannot be trusted to spin at the right speed all the time so you need a way of manually checking and adjusting the speed. Manufacturers like Rega expect you just to trust them that they engineered their products properly to always turn at the right speed. Or you can do as many do and buy a turntable based on the manufacturer's claimed wow and flutter numbers. Whatever they are.

    The turntable as the most important part of the system was the philosophy first espoused by Linn over 40 years ago and has been the fundamental doctrine for audiophiles since then. Prior to that people thought the speakers were the most important as obviously a puny speaker isn't going to sound better than big expensive ones.

    I currently have a Cambridge Duo phono amp going into active speakers. I'm thinking a good upgrade would be to get the AXA 25 and some good quality passive speakers. Should I feel guilty about spending more on the phono amp than the AXA 25?

  • @TheAudiophileMan

    @TheAudiophileMan

    Hi Andrew - no, you have my permission to go all out on the phono and upgrade the amp later on :) You should always upgrade from the source downward anyway so this will be the right order, down the chain. What you will have then is a full-on, up-and-at-'im source, ready for anything. Any later amp upgrade will thus be a genuine and full upgrade.

    Hi. I bought my first turntable in 2021. Coming to this hobby fresh is not so easy. All you guys have record collections you've been amassing since the '70s. But starting off from scratch today it's expensive. How about a guide and tips to the arcane and dark art of buying decent sounding records which aren't scratched to hell or thin sounding. Where to buy and what to look for when you inspect the discs. 1st, nth pressings, discogs, eBay, oxfam, record fairs, the rubbishy grading system (anything less than vg+ = rubbish)also digital v analogue why buy a remaster that's effectively a cd on a record..all that malarkey.

    Love your phraseology and your humour and thanks for all the info you give. Upstairs we have my beloved Trio/Kenwood KD1033 turntable with 1990's Sony amp and cd player. Downstairs we have the same Sony amp and cd player but with a Sony PSLX 210 (I hear your cry of horror). Planning to replace it ...but with what. I'm mainly rock but I've recently got into 78's and was thinking of buying an Audio Technica ATLP120X. Now I know that you've recommended the ATLP5X but it has no pitch control. My Fat's Waller 78's may need pitch control. Am I the lost forth group of buyer?😊

    sorry - disagree with the concept of ' budget' and T'tables. Ya can buy a good DVD player at a big box store for $ 75. U.S. - a decent T'table, $ 300. min. and then there is the issue of durability, even the cost of the source (CD / LP ) itself..... I own the Q speakers, used the actual speakers in a classic late '60's AR cabinets, with additional bass units. also have a Cambridge - receiver, AR 100.
