JK Fab video: • MaxPeedingRods "GT2871...
Super useful video if you want to see the internals of these turbos and see how the balance checks out.
What is up engine heads! So in today's video we will be unboxing a GT28 turbo from MaXpeedingRods. This is a turbo that I will be using on my upcoming Project Underdog build, where I plan to boost a Toyota 4AFE engine to 300hp. The engine will be going into my Toyota MR2 mk1 AW11.
The MaXpeedingRods GT28 turbo is meant to replicate the Garret GT2871r, but for a fraction of the cost, and in today's video we will take a detailed look at this turbo, examine it's pros and cons and see how it compares to the Garret, and also how it fits into the plans for Project Underdog. I'll also be relying on a video from a channel called JK Fab, whose video greatly helped me decide on getting this turbo and offers great value and insight when it comes to all the info on the MaXpeedingRods GT28 turbo.
The MaXpeedingRods GT28 turbo is a rather large turbo for a 1.6 liter engine, but it will give me the opportunity to see how this turbo sizes behaves on my engine, in real world conditions, without actually risking a large sum of money.
A special thank you to my patrons:

This is also what I was thinking, start cheap and create a setup to start with and go up from there. I bought the t3/t4 universal turbo from maxpeedingrods, not going to run that much boost on it and it doesnt really matter if it survives or not, because if it fails it is easy to replace with something better.

can we talk somewhere about the 2etelu?
One thing to remind certain car owners. Just because the turbo was cheaper, does not mean the labor to install it will be cheaper. As he noted, it had improper gaskets and fittings. No shop with any sort of a decent reputation is going to install those shit gaskets and some won't have spare banjo bolts just "laying around". I very much agree with everything stated by D4A, but, like him, I can do the majority of my fab/install work. If you can't, don't be mad at the shop you take it to when they rip this thing as a crap kit.

@@ThefeeXP I remember this very well (Project: Yaris Hilton). What I am referring to is that I actually work for a performance shop and we cringe when a customer asks us to install their cheap turbos. Now, most of the time, they are not approaching it from the aspect that D4A is, and they seem to think they found a "cheat code" to get a race-grade turbo for eBay price. The other problem is that we would need a "fuck-ton" (that's a real measurement, I assure you... lol) more overhead to cover all of the missing gaskets, missing hardware, crap gaskets/hardware, all of the time required to get quality fittings and such, and all of the time to fabricate all of the things missing/not quite right about these lesser grade turbos/kits. (A good example of this is Donut media's "Hi/Low" series.) I can have a quality kit (turbo or otherwise) installed in (typically) 75% of the time it takes the cheaper kits because it is all there, and it all fits. As I said in my original comment, that's not a problem for me personally, I would love to start with a $100-150 "disco potato" and figure it out on my own as I am not paying for labor. But, if you (for whatever your reasons may be, need/want to pay for labor this can be a concern if, like D4A, you're not certain this will be your final turbo and, unlike D4A, you'll have to pay for the labor 2+ times to install your turbo(s). Does that make it more clear?

@@deciplesteve I don't know it either. It made sense when I wrote it, but that was after some beers! I guess what I wanted to say is that those turbos are known to blow the compressor blades, sending debris in the engine. Could end up costing more than a brand name turbo. However, for small projects, that require less than 10PSI boost (allowing you to run on 87/89 oct fuel instead of relying on hi-octane) on most cars, these turbos are more than sufficient for the job. Personally, I would go with the smaller units, run on 7-10PSI boost, and bore out the waste gate, so one can enjoy low turbo lag, and an increase in torque; and drive economical fuel, and still stay within the specs of an engine. These turbos shouldn't be bought with the purpose of high boost applications.
Great project, hoping more videos about, good one

Funny that your video is talking about the exact same brand as my coil over suspension.
Love the videos
Thank you for another brilliant, informative and enjoyable video. It's always a pleasure to watch your productions! For the price, this product looks impressive and is very tempting. A used turbo with unknown history could easily be the same price. The comments about manufacturing quality and potential for failure do have merit - but a turbo from any manufacturer could suffer failure because of a manufacturing defect, oil starvation, overheating, or debris entering the system. The warranty would be a crucial thing to consider - because I imagine most aftermarket engine components will only be covered if it can be proven that failure was caused by a manufacturing defect and not by poor setup/maintenance. This product has me a bit baffled though. You're right - they have to save money somewhere, but after going to those efforts on the turbo itself, giving you incorrect bolts and poor gaskets would set you up for a failure and spoils your experience of the product. Could it be that the turbo is manufactured and checked in one place, then packaged with those bolts and gaskets from elsewhere? It's kind of concerning because, 'as received' the product cannot be used; and does the warranty cover the use of other bolts/gaskets that are necessary? I wonder if maXpeedingrods would offer you the correct bolts/better gaskets? You have given me a new option to consider though. I'd like to make a turbo build one day and something like this is now a strong consideration over having a used turbo rebuilt. The video from JK Fab is a good addition too, and as you say, beneficial for you to see the balance and quality before you bought it yourself. Thank you once again for a great video, and for putting up a makeshift video in your road-side garage which may not be that comfortable to do videos in.
Nice! A discount disco potato. I remember alot for one during my sr20 days
Nice video, will there be porting the head and testing different toyota intakes? Maybe even itb setup?
I have a 1.8 turbo Audi. I replaced the factory K03 turbo with a $100 Ebay K03 and currently have about 4000 miles on it and only 1 issue. The old turbo pushed 21psi, the Ebay turbo at WOT hits 25+psi then I hit a over boost limiter of sorts and it drops to 15psi and holds. I can hear the blow off when it happens. Needless to say I don't go wide open much. Planning to rebuild the factory turbo and put it back on...
I would love to see videos on learn to tune cars, starting from a safe point and doing small increments to improve power until how to determine the limit and stay in a safe reliable set up

only thing i can say is instead of the 4afe you should do the "stroker" 7afe, they pair well with a turbo.
One guy is using a budget turbo on his 1.8L Cruze. So far so good. Just cost a ridiculous amount for him to have a exhaust header fabricated.
Looking forward to the "selecting a turbo" video. Have a 1.6 as well but it has a super long stroke with barely any bore so it doesn't rev high but makes as much torque as a 1.6 can down really low. Thanks for the info, great video. Do you maybe have any experience with replacing OEM turbos with different variations; new OEM, renewed OEM from shop, renewed original turbo from your car or new turbo from other manufacturers like Nissens, Lucas, Mahle, Magneti Marelli, ... what are good options and why?
Definitively bang for bucks there! Damn a much easier 2T cylinder and piston costs 2/3 times as much...
This is quite usefull because I'm looking for a turbo for my 1.6L K4M Clio 2 engine.
What made you decide to move away from the 4AGE? and is your base car a SC or NA AW11?
Those gaskets look fine installed a gtx 2867r gen two two weeks ago gaskets looked the exact same
I see a small hole for oil feed. Is that a build in restrictor?
A 2860 turbo will be a much better choice, unless you are just drag racing. Look forward to following this build.
This turbo you have you can run for 2 minutes per half hour. But with the Garrett you can run for 15 to 18 minutes per half hour. That is you can run Rally or drag racing, but you could be drift racing with the Garrett. And of course by running the turbo I mean doubling your atmosphere inside the combustion chamber during intake. Allowing you to run on an air flow sensor instead of an air pressure sensor although I still suggest both.
You need to port out the wastegate passage hole with a carbide burr and a die grinder, (I recommend using an electric grinder as they have way more torque than an air die grinder) they are very small in these turbo's, plus replace the watergate actuator as they have very strong internal springs which will not work well with sensible boost levels, 10 to 15psi. These actuators need more like 30psi to fully open the wastegate! Boost creep at high rpm is very common because of this. After that the 360* bearing is a good idea if you can find it very cheaply, however it probably makes more sense just to modify the wastegate passageway and fit a better actuator and leave internals as they are since its a cheap turbo and if you need to replace it later down the road just buy another and swap over your modified exhaust housing and actuator for a small price. Liking your videos, would like to see you make a video on the BDA/BDG engine, if not also the 2.5 Millington found in mk2 escort rallycars that have become legendary in the tarmac rally 2wd world esp in Ireland. Ken Block has one in his escort. Kind regards Jason
my friend please port the wastegate hole, I'm having issues with boost creep, the turbo works great but I don't have control on the boost pressure, I have to disamble all again and port thata hole, and thanks for your videos!!!! I have the same turbo on my car
I have a Maxpeedingrods turbo on my Saab pushing 300hp, its not bad for the money.
iv fitted one of these gt 28 on my bmw k100 bike with good results so far not a bad turbo im on a budget and cant afford 1500 dollars to throw at a brand name turbo i thought this turbo wasnt bad for what it cost me
THANKYOUUUUUUU
One thing many people don't consider when looking at a chinabay knock off turbo is sure you could replace it multiple times for the cost of a name brand unit if it dies. But a compressor wheel shattering at 100k rpms can easily cause metal scraps to make their way into the motor and destroy that along with itself. Now the money you thought you saved is gonna cost more than the big name, warrantied turbo was replacing the motor. I'm not saying you can't find a good deal on eBay or elsewhere. Brands like kinugawa and tomioka seem to be well built and properly balanced units for half the cost of a Garret or Borg Warner. Research is key to getting a good deal on a quality product.

I have this exact maxpeeding rods gt2871r on my 2007 fiesta 2.0 duratec (st150) I did away with the internal wastegate as the actuator wouldn't fit against the bulkhead, so I went 38mm external wastegate. it was only a budget build costing me around £2k including mapping and made 285bhp at the flywheel, it is a little laggy but that's good as the engine internals are stock and to much low down torque is what destroys the stock rods, all in all im very happy with this turbo for the price

Journal Bearings vs. Ball Bearings? Both reduce friction just as well as the other, and both fail if they don't get oil. So what does it matter?

what is the stock wastegate actuator pressure on this turbo?
Hey there man. I guess this is a little off topic-ish. But I don't know how else to get ahold of you lol. I turbo'd my 3g eclipse with sportronic transmission. I'm tuning it myself (or trying to) using EcuFlash and the tactrix 2.0 cable. I was wondering if you have any experience with it? I'm trying to make my auto ecu identify boost (engine load greater than 100%) I think I may have it, or I'm like half way there, but I don't know for sure(I have my maps edited and showing 10-180 engine load, but will the ecu actually understand it?).... Do u think i can use it on a diesel build
please also make a video like this for a budget supercharger too!
whats the main difference in street vs standard turbo ?
That seems pretty big for the MR2. Might make your peak numbers, but will likely be mostly lag, followed by too much boost? That said, cheapie turbos are generally a good value. I ran the Garrett GT28xRS on my 1.8T Audi at 25PSI but on a 1.6 not built for a turbo? I used one of the cheapie ebay turbos as a replacement on my wifes Audi and it worked just fine (K04). There's a website of a guy in NZ or Australia (don't have link handy) that has lots of good details on how to make power with the 4age
