I bought this rifle about a year before your review. Topped it with a really neat fixed 6 power Nimrod scope. Surplus off the original Galil sniper rifles. Consistent hits out to 1000. Love this rifle.

I bought my wife this gun in 6.5 creedmoor. The trigger went down to 13 oz and it shoots 1/2 min all day with hornady precision hunter and hornady match. Absolutely amazing for a $400 rifle and $135 Nikon buckmaster 2 scope

Great review Rex. You pretty much just reviewed what I'll be using. Plus I was recently told at a local gun shop that the accutrigger is now standard on all Savage rifles. And PA's 4 to 14 powered ACSS HUD reticle makes it even easier since the reticle was fully vetted & tested before it was sold on the market.

Excellent series, Rex. Thank you for your time and efforts. I absolutely love my Savage 10 rifle in .308. It's a workhorse and Savage uses their Model 10 chassis for a ton of their models. Tons of aftermarket parts for the folks that want to get into that. That accu-trigger makes it a real joy to shoot. I was able to hit a steel bear silhouette at 880 yards (1/2 mile) the first time I shot it. My only .30 cal can is also an SDN-6, so I appreciate you testing yours. I've had similar accuracy with mine attached. I usually shoot this rifle unsupressed, but it's nice to have the option, so I swapped the factory brake for the 51-tooth.

I’ve been shooting this rifle since it 1st entered production with the SWFA SS 10X scope and it’s just simply a tack driver with 155, 168, & 175gr match bullets. It also shoots good Factory hunting ammo into an inch all day long. Been shooting Savage since the Model 99 days and I’ve embarrassed quite a few “Schnobs” over the years with them. I have nothing against high end rifles, my late father in law was a custom rifle builder and I’ve shot em all however, I just can’t justify spending big $$$ when Savage does it just as well for 1/4 of the price. 😎

Rex, I took your first video to heart and got the rifle with the SWFA SS 10x42 fixed power scope. I'm quite pleased with it and though I like this PA scope, I don't see myself making a switch from the SWFA at all. You really did your viewers a good turn buy making these two vids because not all of us have thousands to spend but we still want workable high value systems.

I still can’t believe how accurate this rifle is. I topped my off with a Barra Hero FFP 6-26x50 scope. And you are right that the magazine takes some getting use to. The first time to the range I felt cheated. Not anything to do with this rifle. I was a little upset with how much I spent on my Ruger precision and this gun is just as accurate. Check my scope base after watching this video. Nice and tight. Savage must be watching your channel.

I’ve been shooting Savage since way before they made the Accutrigger and they’ve always shot straight as an arrow. Been shooting the Model 10 FCP since the AccuStock came out in .308 and I’ve embarrassed a lot of guys with expensive rifles using that rifle. SWFA Fixed 10X on the rifle and it’s just dandy.😎

Speaking of the scope mounts, a friend of mine brought me a Remington 30-06 to zero for him for deer season. Bore sighted it and the first two rounds were touching. I thought, awesome we got this, made adjustments and fired 3 rounds that were all over the place. While scratching my head I looked down at the rifle and the scope had slipped backwards in the rings over an inch. Come to find out it was a package deal and I pulled everything off and remounted it. Shot like a dream. If someone does purchase a rifle that has any scope or rings or bases, always take them off and remount.

Hey REX! Huge Fan, your videos got me serious about long range almost 4 years ago now (feels like a lot longer lol) and since then I have got my father into it and its now one of the activities we share which means a ton to me as we didnt always do too much together other than hunting in the fall. I was wondering if you would consider putting a limited version of your seminars up on the internet (for sale of course, not a free thing) so that those of us who live WAY to far away to every make it out could get some of that LR wisdom. I live in the Yukon, in Canada, so odds are I will never make it down to do any of your courses but it would be awesome to have access to a portal where one could buy your theory courses and be able to take that knowledge out the range and apply it. Aside from wanting this personally I can tell you from my own experience as a Custom UAV designer and Operator that online courses can be very lucrative and require very little upkeep once teh initial product is developed and published. Either way, love your videos man and thanks for all your amazing advice on youtube over the years.

Man I wish I’d have had this video a couple months ago! I have the Savage 10T which is a Cabela’s exclusive with a 5rd mag and no fluting on the barrel, though otherwise the same. I also had the scope base come loose after a hundred rounds or so. Degreasing and using loctite is definitely necessary, but other than that it’s a great budget option.

I wish I could say the same. I purchased this rifle 2.5 years ago and had much different results. I did have the same problem on the scope base coming loose. However, not matter what I tried, could not group better than 3.5 inches. Finding a deep gouge in the barrel, I sent it back to Savage. They were great and replaced the barrel and readjusted the headspace. I was able to get roughly .75 MOA with reloads, most others were around 1 inch MOA (their guarantee with the rifles). Since then I have modified it with a Shilen barrel and MDT stock and can group .3 MOA consistently. Overall, I like the rifle and would recommend it to others, but remember if it doesn't shoot as well, send it back to Savage and they'll help you out!

Picked up the same rifle the day after Christmas for $379 after $100 savage rebate. Field and stream exclusive with a heavier bull barrel which is threaded. Mine doesn’t have fluting on the barrel or a detachable magazine. From what I’ve read these exclusives are usually made by savage with last years spare parts for the big box stores. I mounted a Tract Tekoa Hd 4-16x44 BDC scope that uses Schott glass with weaver tactical 6 hole rings. Gun shoots great .I’d have to pay 2or 3 times more to get a slight edge in accuracy. These guns are hard to beat for the price to quality ratio.

  • @klevee6076

    @klevee6076

buddy2280 “last years spare parts”? How utterly ridiculous. The “special” was their model 10T. It has a heavier barrel, without fluting. The muzzle on the model 10T has a muzzle diameter of 0.85”. It’s the heaviest barrel variant they make. The model 10T was built for cabellas. It came in 308 or 6.5CM. 4 round mag not 10. The 10T is identical to the predator max line of rifles, without a camo stock. The 10T is the cabellas special. Came with 5R rifling too. If you’ve got 6 lands and grooves they aren’t the 5R profile. The rifle Rex has isn’t the cabellas special. The 10t has a thicker, heavier barrel than the fluted barrels.

Thanks to Rex's instructions and tutorials. From Dick's, now at Field and Stream: I bought 2 Savage VT-308 24" heavy barrel accutrigger for $399.00 on sale during Christmas.. Put a SWFA 12x42 mil-rad scopes on sale too, $249.00. My son has exact same set up. My son's is the better of the two, but both shoot 1/4 inch groups with Federal Premium 168gr Sierra Matchking at 100 yards. At Ammo and ambient temp at 68 degrees, muzzle velocity range 2697, 2697, 2697 2706, 2687 with a Magneto-speed. My muzzle velocity was little wider 2674, 2665, 2630, 2666, 2643. Both zeroed at 200 yards. I have shot both at 500 yards and very tight groups at 2.7 mils: vertical 2 1/2 inches spread, horizontal 7 inches spread. They both also like 168 A-max Hornady (not the Hornady Black). Hope to bring them soon to a farther range. I only wish I had ranges that went further.

Their rimfires are good out to 400 yards also. At 100 yards with the cheap plastic stocks, they are sub MOA if you do your part and use sufficiently powerful optics.

I bought a savage model 12fv in 308. After i ran 5 rounds into it i was on target. My first group was 6 shots into exactly one inch. Since I've broken it in, it's shooting 3/4 inch groups with the factory stock with good ammo. When I'm doing my job. A 3/4 moa shooter. With hornady match ammo. Then I bought a mdt chassis. Shooting half moa now. Got a clamp on muzzle brake ordered. I'm hoping to shoot 3/8 groups. I'm not sure you can improve on half inch groups with anything. I'll let you know if it does

Hell, my pic rail on my Savage Mk II FV-SR came loose due to greasy screws after about 900 rounds. And it is a .22 lr. So I can just imagine how quick yours worked loose.

Mike Simpson the compass is a hunting rifle. Skinny pencil barrel built for hunting. Meaning taking a single shot, and maybe a follow up shot, but that’s it. My brother has a compass in 22-250,and I’ve got a couple of dimensions. One in 243,the other in 7RM for the mountains if I’m stuck pushing bush. The savage above isn’t built for the same type of application. The savage is built to handle more rounds in succession,to be more consistent even when very hot and the model 10T was the rifle offered to police services. So your compass is a great entry level hunting rifle. The model 10 above is more along the lines of a precision rifle. And based on its accuracy and consistency the term “precision” absolutely fits describing that savage

Its a really pleasant gun and hilariously accurate. I set mine up as a trainer and just for fun gun too. Handloads for the rifle make it seem like a custom rig. I added alot of stuff to the rifle but its still factory action and barrel. Your family will love it!

LastCaress7 From what I can tell the ballistics of the 123gr Hornady ELD match and a match 170 to 175gr 308 are pretty similar. With only about 10in more drop at 800yrds than a match 308.

Thank you and hoping to see a video on those lines👍🏻

I picked up a mod 10 Ba stealth in 6.5 creedmor for the RX-17 02 live fire. The rifle shoots 0.5 moa or better, the butt stock kinda sucks and the front of the chassis is a little to flexible. If I could do it again I'd buy a cheap mod 10 and a different chassis like the Mirage URL. But who can complain over 0.5 moa for $950

Hey REX what are your thoughts on a little 6.5 Grendel bolt action to reach out to 800yrds? My sons want to learn how to shoot out to longer ranges. I figured that would be a good place to start. It looks like that Savage you've been testing but its about a 30% smaller rifle.

I have the 20” version of this rifle. When shooting it, the enlarged bolt knob scrapes skin away at the back of my trigger finger between the two most medial knuckles. Is anyone else having this happen, or what am I doing wrong while shooting? I don’t have this issue with any other rifles of mine.
