i would highly recommend old fractal design define series cases, you can get them for super cheap (same as that discount case, and even cheaper) and they have plenty of drive bays and way better build quality and features than something like that cheap new case.

Seriously waiting for this channel to explode. You do good work, have nice voice, make interesting content, and have good production value!

Also there are a lot of github projects for linux running on xbox 360 and xbox one wich would be perfect for most home users to start labbing! Could you may take a look into that? I would have Hardware you can use - or probably destroy while trying ;D

Thank you for making this video. My old FreeNAS server was finally starting to die, so I decided to build instead of buy to replace it based on your video. I was able to build a server with almost the same exact specifications, except for larger drives. One wrinkle I ran into with the Jginyue motherboard I purchased was getting the system to boot and recognize the NVME drive. It ended up being an issue with physical jumper settings on the (non-documented) motherboard. The required jumper settings for booting from either SATA or PCI-E (M.2 slot) were printed right on the board, underneath where the NVME drive goes. My board was defaulted to SATA, and once I switched the jumpers to PCI-E, the board booted and recognized the drive, where I was able to install PROXMOX. I hope this helps someone with a similar issue.

I actually bought my first actual server yesterday on ebay for about $270 that had 128GB of Ram and 2 of your cpus but no drives. before, had used to be running a bunch of computers as a server, I had 2 optiplexes and a heavilly modified HP Elitedesk as my NAS with about 8Tb of drives

Found your channel at the perfect time!! Moving into a bigger house and going to build a dedicated server. Your videos are awesome, keep it up man.

This video has inspired me to start looking around at pieces and parts, now that I know it can be done relatively cheaply and easily. Thank you and I look forward to more videos.

This was a very informative video for me, particularly the realization that there *are* ways ot get Xeon-compatible boards outside of old enterprise server hardware.

Thanks! Great video. Watched at 1.25 speeds and went very smooth. Something to consider in post production. Everyone talks about VM's but I've never seen a channel bring them up in a video. Would enjoy seeing a Minecraft server or something similar.

I bought 2 proliant ml350e for 300$ and a ml380p for 180$, even if you want to build your own and they have a lot of proprietary hardware it's still a lot of fun. Old servers have ecc ram, xeons, quadro GPUs etc it's often a real treasure hunt. I recommissioned 2 and build a free trashed 1u out of the spares.

Keep up the good work, plenty of ideas, and really enjoying your proxmox videos. 🙂

Craft Computing, PhilsComputerLab and Gamers Nexus covered these chinese brand "X79" boards and they are not actually true X79 chipset boards but rather modded Q77, P77, B75 or C204/206 chipsets with modded BIOS. It a mix match of components so one board may have USB 3.0 support others dont have USB 3.0. And earlier boards do not come with NVME support. And most boards only support PCI-E gen 2.0 when the board or box printed PCI-E gen 3.0 support. There are some modded BIOS around the internet where you can flash it and get higher memory speed options and some overclocking going with the CPU. Just be wary of the VRMs as they are generally crappy ones. I was wondering if those PCI-E based mSATA or NVME raiser cards work with the x16 slots. That way you can expand on more storage or throw in a capture card and make the PC the capture PC for video recording. 500 bucks for a powerful NAS/Server is damn good esp when some brand name NAS like Synology charges 500 bucks just for the enclosure minus the HDDs. I like this idea. Using old hardware as a home server. The pricing is soooo good. My uncle is sending me a A10-9700E AM4 Cpu with a 256gb m.2 drive. Planning this system for small low power minecraft server and storage server. The cpu was $35 and 35watt tdp.

NVME uses PCIE. So theoretically, any chipset with PCIe lanes can get NVME. If NVME existed back when this chipset was around, OEMs most certainly would have added it. The Chinese boards are unique in that they use older chipsets (new old stock ICs probably) and throw in some new stuff like NVME.

Yeah very true. So convenient to get native high speed storage on some older budget hardware.

Your local post office is the culprit in why they are getting closed out along with the originaldeliveryissue.. It will take some time but call the 1-800 number and ask to elevate the case to consumer affairs. They can apply heat to the supervisor at the local office.

The Xeon's are good. I got Xeon e5 2698 v4 (20c/40t) and 256GB of ram, running Eve-Ng on this server. Really happy with this build ;)

@@RaidOwl right now, I'm trying to figure out VLans. Network segmentation for work equipment, and personal equipment. I haven't seen this topic much, kinda surprised due to everyone working from home still. I agree! I definitely would like something with more power, but my major concerns are noise, power draw, and footprint from the equipment - also potential heat generated from said equipment. It seems like everyone recommends the optiplex as an entry point. Or would you recommend to look into a custom build further? My budget is honestly 230..ish usd.

And for around $200 it would be worth it to just snag an old Dell or HP system off Craigslist for around $100 and use the other $100-150 for storage and a NIC.

@@RaidOwl awesome! I actually have been looking around my area for a Dell or HP. I'll just grab one. I was concerned about potential bottleneck due to upgradability in regards to ram. I'm planning to primarily use docker, and expand into orchestration once I have more understanding of virtualization and containers. I'm actually running a netgate appliance. The sg1100. Really didn't have the time to mess with it until recently. My understanding is the default configs are pretty golden out of the box, much better than what you can get from a box store like Walmart. I'll definitely check out your video on vlans.

Yea them Snowman coolers work great for the price. I have close to the same build but mine was a Huananzhi X79.

@@RaidOwl Did not use the boost but did over clock it to 3.8 mhz. It plays every game i play perfectly. think i have a v3 variant.

Today it's easier to build a rig than a small Lego set, I miss the good old days of IRQ, Caps exploding and CPUs getting easily fried, these days there is no more fear in building a pc :D :D

I am not a computer geek but, I came upon your video because this is what I am wanting to create - a server that is connected to my pc. I thought I'd buy a used pc, shuck my 4 external HDDs and store them in the server/older pc. I am not sure how I can connect this to my computer. And it would use 1 plug rather than 4 adapter plugs for the externals. Then I can use a nas so I can access all of my movies and other content from any where. I had thought of using something like raid setup to backup 8TB:8TB and the 12TB:12TB. I saw on some videos, it was suggested to use Plex for my movies (I am not fussy about that part). I just wanted to be able to access my hard drives anywhere and have them backed up. And I thought I'd be accessing them from my my regular PC.

It’s kinda funny that a brand new b550m Mortar made by MSI, only cost about 700 RMB(which is about 100$) in China. It seem like that the area people are living actually influences the price in a large scale.

i just got built 1 as well around 500 bucks with x99 F8 board with the xeon e5-2670 v3.... i got lucky and have a supplier for 16GB DDR4 RDIMMs 2400T for less than 50 bucks each so i bought 2 of them.... its surprising how cheap these budget builds for home servers are now still priced at such low prices.... while everything else is going up in price like there is no tomorrow... the only pricy parts in my build is the board being over 100 bucks while the cpu is 80 bucks but the HDD i salvage from my old systems and got a bunch of some old 2TB WD blue and green drives.... yea... that old... so i guess the pricing for them are 20 bucks each if i had to say if you can find them used.... i have like 4 of them lying around so i just used them.... breakdown of mine is: X99 F8 $130+ around there Xeon E5-2670 v3 $80 (was originally planning to use E5-2620 v3 which was like $30 used but i didn't want to use DDR4 at 1866MHz speeds because i heard these boards are a pain to get it to OC) 2x 16GB DDR4 2400T 1Rx4 RDIMM $100 4x 2TB WD blue and green drives $80 NVME 128GB $18 Random chinese cooler that can work with the snowman mount/amd mount $20 Case some random lying around NZXT Source 210 Elite it has like a ton of 3.5 drive bay... i got it like for $30 a long time ago.... PSU some random PSU from the same case era... a seasonic lowest tier semi modular bronze PSU... got it for $50 back then.... Total of around $510 And i am planning to move all secondary storage from my other systems to this guy.... so i have like 3 8TB drives and 4 4TB drives ready to go... now i am just wondering how to run some other software to interact with this machine to automate my life and act as a media server for my PS systems and my TVs and other devices.... also my steam library....

Just noticed you went with 2x16GB memory. The Xeon has 4 memory channels, so you'll get better performance if you populate the remaining 2 even if you do an extra 2x8GB or 2x4GB (what I have as I had them laying around).

@@wadadli4sun yes but i originally got the 16GB for almost the price of the 8GB sticks and i was planning on running it as a home server with no virtualization so the extra memory is overkill for a home server... that's why i run dual channel... its not for any other reason really... i just found some cheap memory online... if i didn't find it i would have gotten a 4 x 8GB config...

plus with 16GB sticks, in the future when the sticks becomes cheap again due to obsolescent, i could just plop more memory into the system and use it for high ram consumption applications and usage... plus this was turned into my non-gaming and it does only simple virtualization task setup mainly because my main gaming rig is running a more powerful local storage setup with loads of NVME SSD now due to reasons... i was originally slightly unhappy with not running quad channel.... but due to circumstances i am happy with the current setup....

I think a Ryzen 7 1700 server would be an better option - Over all it would cost the same or just a bit more - More energy efficient - More performance - Big upgrade path - No sketchy chinese motherboard (A good B350 is plenty enough) - Can also run and use ECC RAM (Be sure to lookup the motherboard manual if the mothernoard allows for ECC RAM)

I was eating at the House of Blues before a show in Houston and they walked in and sat down right next to us. It was dope.

Its kinda make sense, cpu with motherboard cost 170 usd its not that much. On the other hand if you find a deal on used market, its possible to buy Ryzen 5 1600 with B450 motherboard in that price range. Ryzen got over 20% higher passmark score and you gain all that newer instruction sets. You also not need to worry about bugs (for example with sleep mode) some chinese motherboards have. I know it looks kinda interesting to build something from retired server stuff, but cheap ryzens are making old E5 xeons preety much obsolete. I can buy new Gigabyte B450 v2 ATX motherboard for around 60 usd in europe (including tax).

Yeah that’s certainly an option. However, you lose some cores when going with a Ryzen 1600 and the increased cost if you want to use ECC DDR4 vs DDR3 is something to consider.

I pretty much have the same build, using a huananzhi motherboard, same cpu, same memory, 120gb sandisk, 4tb wd drive. It's all in a deepcool case. I use it as a Jellyfin server.

@@RaidOwl Honestly, I never played with Plex to much. I didn't like the idea of having to pay for certain things. Jellyfin seems to have all the features and I don't have to pay anything. I can not, however, get it to work properly on a windows system. Not sure what the problem is, but I'm trying to work through it on a spare. I run Jellyfin on Q4OS without any hiccups.

My only concern would be when running an older chip, is what is your electricity bill going to be? Unless it's not going to be doing much. Also, I would need more than 32gig in today's VM lab environment. I used to have a Core i5 with a 32gig ram VM setup. But I understand this is a budget build.

Yeah I agree but like you said it’s a budget build. I think this is solid for someone who wants a NAS and to spin up a few VMs to mess around. For real work and running ZFS you’ll need more resources but it is what it is lol.

I prefer the Haswel generations (V3) and the X-99 motherboards. I just bought 3 e5-2660 V3 for $30 a piece on eBay. I also bought 2 new HDDs each is a 4tb for only $50. These brand new hard drives are dirt cheap.

Sadly we run for the price of $ 120, forgetting that previously brand motherboards were around $50!

OMG, the box of the motherboard is awesome!!! How cannot you trust this board when this says in the box "THE ORIGINAL"!!! After some ironic comments, and a great video, I saw these boards and CPUs on eBay and I was thinking in create some kind of server this these hardware pieces, recently I built an i7 4gen PC 32GB RAM but I'll change it for an i5 7gen PC 32GB RAM, just because, but the i7 will turn in my first home server for VMs, and I have other i5 in theory to be my pfsense but that's to much power for pfsense, this could be my docker server or NAS.

i just stumbled across this build & i looks prety solid for a good starter build for sure .. i have 4-5 home servers i host/manage one with dual e5-2696v2's to a pair of e5 2620's unraid and TrueNas my oldest is runing a pair of X5675's that i just cant seam to retire as it just works so well still yet..lol. i know im a server hardware addict

Yep it’s alive. It doesn’t run 24/7 anymore but I use it occasionally as a test system

my first server was with a i3 2120 to and with 4gb of ram and it was so slow.

I see most people just ignoring energy price with hosting @ home. I wanted to run a server in my basement based on a phantom 2 x4 quadcore with a tdp of 95 Watts. Only the CPU would cost me 19€/month to run. If you need to pay for parts etc you were be better of with just going with a Hetzner VPS and wireguarding your stuff for 99% of the services you "need". For filehosting / backup-stuff just get a pi.

Awesome video! Have you checked how much power it draws in idle and under full load with harddrives on? Also I know from your other videos that you are running Proxmox on your other server, and I thought if you "spin down" your harddrives on that server when they are not in use?

This server would be more than adequate for a 7days to die server. I would suggest putting the server on fast storage (ssd instead of spinning disk) to speed up startup timing and reduce server lag caused by backups.

@Isaac Ty.... I have to do some trouble shooting now. LOL For some reason all the fans are spinning up at full speed but the system is not posting at all. PSU is good as I tested it on another mobo. Im thinking I'll need new CPU's or another mother board. If I need new CPU's its because I tightened the Coolers down too much. MY BAD>

Great channel. Great videos. I love the builds that focus on one aspect, like this one in building the least expensive. I'd *LOVE* to see one that optimizes for lowest energy consumption. Do you normally measure energy consumption of the servers you build? I have no idea what these home servers consume but I'm guessing it's a LOT. Especially when measured against per-person or per-hour efficiency. Would it require giving up a lot of performance? I'm not sure it would. Especially if there's a reasonable amount of battery there to buffer it. Anyway, thanks for the videos. They're a lot of fun and very informative.

Thank you so much! Yeah balancing power/performance is the tightrope a lot of users are concerned about because they're (for the most part) an inverse relationship. The most energy efficient server isn't going to be very powerful and vice-versa. I think the better way to approach it is 'what are my needs for MY server and how can get just the amount of power I need without wasting energy?'. I think the best bet for price/performance/energy efficiency is something like the Xeon E5 2428L v2, it's got 8 cores, 16 threads, 60W TDP, uses cheaper DDR3 ram, and the x79 boards can be found for around $100.

You called this a "budget home server", then proceeded to every so often list things this "server" wasnt capable of doing. My use case is I'm a graphic designer and software developer who needs 8 terabytes of storage. Based on your statements, it sounds like this build would not work for my application (rapid response and load times on Adobe graphics editing and CAD). Is that right? If so, what would you recommend as a budget deskptop build for my use case? For reference, I bought a Dell G5 "gaming" laptop in mid 2020 a d it cant even run two 50GB VirtualBox machines simultaneously without bogging down.

May I ask, do you have that WD Ultrastar as your normal data drive? Is it cool to run one or possibly two as everyday drives. Cool to see that I am not the only one who uses W10 as a sanity checking OS. It's a bit like when I use Edge for downloading Firefox. Microsoft has it's uses. Wicked little processor and very cool board. I just sold a very cool Asus m/ITX z97 board and all it had was one M.2 SATA. That Jginyue had one of each for Christ sake.

not sure how I feel about using a Chinese board like that, personally I spent about the same price on a used dual socket supermicro board. I also bought 2 of the Xeon E5-2670 v2s which are 10 core - 20 thread, but all in all still a decent home server for the majority of people. I honestly doubt most people would be looking for enterprise features like the IPMI the supermicro boards offer. nor do i think most need support for up to 512GB of ram

@@jerelabs An after thought, if you end up using one of those boards the cooler can be a pain to track down. those boards use the Narrow ILM not the standard square. the cooler i used is the SUPERMICRO SNK-P0050AP4 Heatsink

Hey mate, could you provide links to the items please? Specifically for the drives?

What is the portable monitor you’re using? I have one but despite having 2x usb-c ports, it only works when a mini-usb is plugged in with the usb-c connected to my Mac.

Man, I wish I could tell you. I bought it so long ago and its basically some Chinese unbranded unit. It works pretty well, though.

I can see this kind of setup working well as a Plex server maybe. Would this be good enough for a small handful of real time transcode for streaming to local devices, or would I be better off looking for something with a little more horsepower? Also, I was looking at a dual xeon 2697v2 setup the other day, but most of the Chinese motherboards are EATX or larger and seemed a bit pricey. Any suggestions?

This should be fine for a few transcodes especially if you can throw a GPU in there to handle it. If you're doing more than that then you may want to consider upgrading a bit. Thanks very much for the video I enjoyed and was incentivized by your presentation. One question please, you mentioned using Proxmox on this server. If you were to use Proxmox VE , would it be installed as the operating system on the MVME drive? I have been having issues getting Proxmox VE to recognize my NVME drive😕.

Yeah I have mine installed directly onto the nvme drive and there are no issues. Is the drive detected in your bios?

A $50 power supply? In a server that's gonna be running 24/7? Do NOT cheap out on components that have the potential to explode every other part in your pc. Pay more and buy a premium psu with a decent wattage and power efficiency rating. It will save you money in the long run.

I mean yeah if you can afford a better psu then certainly go for it. However, this was meant to be a budget build and you can find some decent used psus for around $50 if your power requirements aren’t too high. You are correct, though, that skimping out on power supplies is generally not a good idea.

How are you able to use Wireless Peripherals during Setup and everything are those Driverless? And if so what do you use?

Most all devices these days are plug n play so I’m just using a cheap wireless Logitech kit.

An big question that goes unanswered here. Power should be a major consideration for a 24/7 home server and I was surprised it wasn't discussed and ultimately measured.

You're right, I should be more mindful about including power usage and will moving forward. This machine uses 88W at idle, which is pretty good considering it has 4 HDDs, a NIC and a GPU.

I think power draw should be as low as possible and the server still should fullfill the needs one has. This is the main reason I would not buy an old rack server that would come very cheap. Power hungry tasks should be offloaded to the pc, and the server should do the always on stuff. This only true for home and very low number of users :-)

Hello, had a few questions... I wanted to do a server just like this one but figured id go with a better CPU like E5-2697 V3. Does the same mobo work? and will any video card suffice? I saw MACHINIST X99 motherboard on ebay, figured it would be the same. Also, what kind of PSU/ GPU would you advise, I was looking at a low end 730 (markets are crazy right now lol) and could you tell me what kind of cooler I can use, like a few suggestions?

I am pretty sure that the V3 chips are supported by these motherboards but I'd just confirm with the seller before buying. Any pcie video card will be fine. I have a few of these, some with $10 gpus. The PSU/GPU will totally just depend on what hardware you use and what you're trying to run. Unless you're doing some rendering/encoding then I'd go with a cheaper GPU. I highly advice not to skimp out on PSUs as a cheap one can ruin some/all of your system so I'd advice to at least make sure its 80+ bronze certified. I hope this helps! Edit: I think the x79 versions supports V1/V2 chips while the x99 ones support V3...but I'd still do the research before buying.

I really enjoyed watching this. Would this be a good build to use as a Proxmox server and have as your virtual machines Mac OSX, Windows and Linux?

This one, probably not. The GPU isn’t powerful enough to do anything cool with. But if you just wanted basic video out for web browsing and stuff then it would work.

if i make my own game server, can i switch it to private so i can play the internet games i have on it with who i want with it ? also can i play solo on the internet games i have on it ? that would be interesting to do i think looks like a fun project for me after the pandemic. money is still tight. thank u for the vid.

If you throw a decent gpu in it and do hardware encoding then yep!

so how virtuals run at the machine? how many virtuals, what os in them, performane?

It depends on what you have running on your virtual machines. With 16 cores and 32gb of RAM you can get plenty of VMs spun up for a home server, assuming they aren’t too demanding.

Nice build! Kinda surprised you didn't go "x99" / 2011-3. There are PLENTY of CPUs available for 2011-3 under $40. If DDR4 is too expensive, there are DDR3 compatible boards and 2011-3 processors.

I recently built a dual 2666v3 (OEM only 10c/20t 3.5Ghz) + Huananzhi F8D motherboard. I got the CPUs off ebay for $30 each + tx/shipping and the motherboard I already had but they are around $130-150 on Aliexpress. That's a "mid to high" end dual CPU config, but it's in the price sweet spot right now. You COULD get the "T8D" DDR3 version of my board and grab 2x 2011-3 DDR3 compatible Xeons if you wanted to save on ram cost. I believe 2678, 2629, 2649, 2669, 2673, 2676, 2696v3 Xeons support DDR3. I believe my 2666v3 does too, but I am not quite sure.

As for the Snowman I prefer the M-T6s. It's a 120mm Tower cooler from $20-25.

As a footnote, my dual 2666v3 CPUs with Turbo Unlock exploit, the system held 3.48Ghz under Cinebench R23/AVX2 and scored 18711 multicore. Out of all 20 cores, the hottest core was 72c PEEK.

I just found this video. a huge misconception everyone has especially when you mention "x79" Its a chipset prior to the x99 which will suipport ECC memory. not Registered ECC. Those are server chips that will only support that and when you purchase a chinese "x79" board they arent actually x79 chipset... but some old server variation. so when people actually pick up say a p9x79 they try to shove in inexpensive registered ecc and it wont work.

Could this work as a server that can be used a to store video files and edit from?

It depends on a few things like what codec you shoot in, what resolution/fps it is, how many files you have etc. A couple of 1080p/24fps files should be fine using the built in 1Gbit NIC but if you’re looking at multiple 4k videos I’d splurge for a 10Gbit NIC for this and your editing PC. Overall, you certainly can make it work.

What eBay seller did you get the hard drives from? How much were they?
