Budget Golf Ball vs. Premium Golf Ball | Titleist Pro V1x & Wilson Duo Soft | Golf Ball Comparison

Спорт

In this golf ball comparison video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell uses Trackman technology to compare a premium golf ball offering (Titleist Pro V1x) and a budget golf ball offering (Wilson Duo Soft) to compare the differences and find out if the high price is worth it for a premium golf ball.
For this golf ball comparison, Campbell hits shots with a 50-degree wedge, 7-iron, and driver to gather data.

    From an amateur, high handicapper’s perspective, Wilson golf ball is a winner all the way. We are not talking about the tour players here; we are talking about the amateur golfers, mostly high handicappers who are not interested in 6-8 yards extra range, at less than half the price of Pro V1s. For me, it’s Wilson Duo Soft every time. Happy golfing!

    The Duo Soft are for golfers under 90MHP swing speed. A golfer at 85-90 verses the PV-1 using the Wilson Duo are almost head to head. PV-1 are the best out there without a doubt. But for the lower swing speed the Duo is a great ball

    The Wilson balls are $19.99/dozen vs ProV $49.00/dozen. ProV more than twice the price with the only advantage is distance off the driver. Not very impressive for a "premium" ball. Love these comparison videos. Great content.

    Nice review, but I think you had your mind made up before you did the test by the way you were comparing the two. Reviews of golf balls can only matter if a hitting machine is used, human nature will always play a part in judgement. For me the Pro V golf balls I have played tend to end up off the fairway quite a bit, don't know about the Wilson. Would love to see a machine test of these two and say Maxfli and Srixon sometime.

    This was a good comparison, Thomas. Sure, the Wilson is half the price of the Pro V1X, but it's still interesting to see how significant the results can perhaps be when paying less. I am a senior golfer with a 75MPH driver speed, and hit drives around 185. I have alternated between a budget ball (TruFeel, Duo) and premium (Pro V1X). In reality, I cannot tell any difference in my drives, despite the ball. Re the oft-mentioned aspect of stopping power, I have done many tests. For my pitches and chips, the minor amount of extra rollout with the cheaper ball is only a couple of yards' difference. My takeaway is that all of these balls perform very similarly. And for we higher handicappers, is it that big of a deal if a wedge shot goes a couple more yards with a cheaper ball? We're usually not good enough to hit stop-and-drops anyway.

    The Wilson Duo Soft is designed for players with slow swing speed. It would be interesting to see a matchup of the two balls with a golfer who's swing speed is below 80 mph.

    110mph + swing speed are the only people that should be using a prov 1 or a pro vx. Period. Period. Do your homework chaps. Google has an array of knowledge on what ball to use under 95 mph swing speed. Compression and feel is key for this mph range. Plus the low spin rate is unmatched. If spin is key to ur game place ball alittle up in stance hit higher trajectory on short irons wedges the ball will stop on spot iam a 4 handicap been playing for 35 years with a 85-95 mph swing speed the wilson duo plus has gained me 15 yds on my drives and keeps me in fairway 90% fairway percentage. The cover gets dinged up bad only only disadvantage . prov 1 and x r rocks rocks chaps.

  • @TheMcfreeze

    So, off the irons the Wilson was better because they traveled farther. Knowing that I could switch to an 8 iron and get the same distance the Titleist. That would increase the spin and give me a softer feel off the irons. Should I pay more money to pick up 8 yards on my Driver? If I have 100 yards in with a ProV1 and 108 with the Wilson what am I doing? Both distances are the same wedge which the Duo was better off wedge shots right?

    Hey Thomas...miss dead center much? Try hitting a Pro V1x ball out of center, closer to the toe. It’s a brutal feel. Yardage lost is huge compared to new Duo Soft+. I use both in my home sim and the only real distance loss with the Duo is the driver at ~125-130 MPH ball speed. Spin is actually too low with driver BUT I’m in the fairway or just off compared to the ProV, which can end up wet or in the woods. Thanks for the video!

    Dry ball testing is great and I thank you for doing this test. What I would really like to see is that same 7 iron approach to a green on a real world test with Trackman or GC Quad data as well. We know the numbers but what I think we would all love to see is what happens to that wedge or 7 iron approach shot on the course. Is there enough spin on the wedge with the Wilson ball for it to hop and stop w/in a yard or two? How far does that 7 iron roll out on an approach shot with both balls etc? I know it's a lot more work and more complicated but it would fantastic content and real world data.

    I game the Snell MTB Black ball and use Wilson Duo Spin during the shoulder of the season and the numbers you've shown are on or about what I would have expected based on what I see in the field. What surprised me though was the spin consistency of the Wilson with 7 iron and driver. I didn't expect that. I just figured the theme from the 50 degree would continue.

    Nice, but question...if you had a target 200 yards out you could use 7 iron with the wilson and a 6 iron with the titleist. What would-be drop the spin? Isnt golf playing to a target?

  • @2ndswing

    @2ndswing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Harry its player dependent. If I used a 6iron with the Titleist ball the spin would be about 700 rpm less, still not as low as the 7 iron with the Duo Soft. Golf is playing to a yardage but keep in mind the Prov1x will stop faster so if you have a bunker at the front of the green and pin on front of the green its going to be very hard to get the ball closer with a lower spinning ball

    I suspect on an average swing speed player Thomas these two balls would be much closer together. I like a soft feel ball and game the titleist true feel, tour soft or srixon soft feel and get better results from these than the pro v or top end tour balls. Just don't think the high end balls are worth the money unless your a very low / scratch golfer

    It's nice to see some data collected that correlates to my thoughts. I have played with some players who can get the most out of a ProV1. However, for my game...less distance off the tee could be a good thing because if you don't have as much control then shortened distance off the tee can be a benefit. I like Wilson balls and unless you have lots of control in your game then they tend to be the sweet spot of distance vs control...imho. Perhaps this is not correct thinking about golfing, but I don't have much more time to put into the game than I already do. Anyway good content.

    Please note this is an expensive 3 pc PV 1x versus a cheaper 2 pc Duo Soft. I play both plus the Spalding Tour SD X which is a PV 1x clone. My driver swing speed is about 90 mph. The one biggie for PV 1 and 1x is usually lower dispersion though your data does not show it except on scatter plot of 5 shots with the driver. The irons were very close. Really too small a sampling though. The PV1x with high compression (harder) feels better when pounding with the driver. Off the irons it feels hard while Wilson is nice and soft to me. The PV1x seems slightly longer off my driver. Stopping power on the greens gives the edge to PV 1x. The Wilson is half the price and for most players it works fine. The biggie in your data is the driver dispersion (straight or staying online). This is where Titliest shines. I find fairways slightly more with PV1x versus the Wilson. However the difference is usually pretty small. As far as around the greens including putting; slight edge to PV1x. For a cheaper 2 pc ball - the Wilson is pretty darn close to the PV 1x

    the wilson isn't fitted for your swing speed, with a much lower swing speed the wilson would react differently, with the wedge not much difference but as you move up your speed increases and the softness comes into play more, by the time you are hitting driver it's like hitting a pillow the wilson over compresses and you lose ball speed, but when you turn 60 you might give this ball a try, just saying

    Agree, slower driver swing speeds (80 to 90 mph) get more distance with soft compression balls than hard premium balls. This video comparison of soft vs hard proves only that high swing speed golfers should play harder, premium golf balls rather than very soft compression balls. Had this video been done at slow swing speeds, meaning considerably below the 94 mph average golfer, the results would show the opposite and that slow swing speed golfers should play soft balls instead of the harder premium balls.

    Who uses the driver on every shot? The numbers on the Titleist on the driver were great, but Wilson did better on the midirons and fairly equal on the wedges... so if one adds up ALL the yards from each club test, they are just about even for total yardage on a given hole... and remember the drivers are left in the bag on par 3's. Also, the dispersion circle drawn on the Wilson looked bigger than it needed to be... but then again, what do I know, I don't make money selling golf equipment.

  • @zazhou

    @zazhou

    2 жыл бұрын

    You are right. In this test, driver followed by 7 iron would be slightly longer in total distance for the Wilson ball and for driver/wedge combo slightly longer for Pro V1. That probably means that driver/8 or 9 iron combo would give same total distance. However, this can only be said for very high swing speed golfer. For lower than average swing speed golfers, the results would show longer distances for the Wilson ball.

  • @GabrieleAvanzo
    @GabrieleAvanzo3 жыл бұрын

    I think you just went to pick the best values for the proV1x. For example you picked the dispersion with the 7 iron, but not with the driver. You picked the spin consistency with the wedge, but not with the 7 iron. You were basically biased and wanted to say pro V1x is better.. D’oh, it costs 3 times the price of the Wilson. I think for a lot of people the Wilson will be way more appealing than the Titleist. I myself don’t do 300yds anyway with the driver, I won’t lose 8yds for sure using the Wilson.

    This video is informative but not quite in the right way. Obviously, as someone with close to tour speed swings, you’re going to be better with the harder ball. You can control the spin and ball speed better. For those who can’t, less spin both off the driver and other clubs, are going to be more beneficial. Obviously you know these things, and you talk about golf ball fittings, but you talk about the Wilson Duo soft the stats it put up as though they are negative. It’s not negative, the ball did exactly what it’s designed to do. Less spins give those higher handicap’s more likelihood to stay in bounds and gain more distance, as we saw with the 7-iron. These videos would be better off using someone who the ball is actually fitted to and then giving them a pro V1 and seeing that difference

It is a very good ball for my 88mph swing. For you to disparage the duo because it doesn't fit your 100 mph+ swing is just not right. These differences are completely insignificant for an average golfer. This gentleman probably doesn't lose a golf ball most rounds, so paying 5 bucks a ball is no big deal. If you lose 6 balls a round or more like many of us do, that gets expensive. Golf is already expensive enough. Give up a few yards off the tee and save some money so you can play more often. I'm not saying to play to Duo Soft. Go ahead if you like it, but there are lots of other balls with similar price points that are just fine for most of us.

    5:26 the 7 iron distance can't be right he smoked on 214 yards. I sense a bit of titliest bias

    Thanks for watching. The 7iron went a total distance of 214 with the Duo Soft because when testing the spin was signifganctly lower. No bias just showing how spin influences distance.

    Well lets see. One costs 80 cents and the other aboot 4 bucks and change. SO, did the ProV1x give you 5 times the performance ? If you're not someone out there losing balls price isn't an issue anyway. I buy these to hit in a field behind my house. Got a shagbag and just do that. Cheaper than the driving range. It's a driving range ball. No more, no less. There's some courses that I play on occasion there are so many water hazards and hitting out of bounds...forget it, that ball is gone it's so wooded and rocky I'll use a cheap ball at the Tee and not even go look for a OB shot. You wouldn't want to hit out of it anyway to spare damage to your club. I just hit another. Then, on my second shot, I'll pick it up and hit a Prov1 or equivalent. Against the rules yes, but ...not a tournament. No one cares. Might even t-up a 5 iron on the fairway. Which actually you can if you've taken an ob stroke...To date, no ones come out and 'confronted me' on this. Sometimes I'll have 15 or 16 clubs in my bag. Shhhhh...don't tell anyone. So ...what have we learned ? We learned an .80 ball is not quite as good as a 4.20 ball. Over 90% of recreational golfers don't break 100. Ever. For 90% of the golfing world, the ball they are using....is irrelevant. Most golfers don't even know how to keep an accurate score. What is a penalty and what is not. Etc etc...And because they are often rushed because of the pace of the course...they just end up hacking. One reason I NEVER let the so called 'pressure' of someone waiting at a T box rush my shot. My money is just as good as theirs. Better actually....because it's mine. Remember....it's suppose to be fun.

    Sorry keep it simple, it's all about compression , soft vs hard , no matter how cheap or expensive it is ...

    What a pointless test. Do the same test with a genuine 85 mph swinger, which is who the duo soft will better suit, and then see if the cost of ProV1 is worth spending.

    So, if you hit driver-7iron to a 475 yard par4 it doesn’t matter what golf bal you use… Titleist Pro V1: 290+185=475yards carry Wilson: 282+193=475yards carry It only matters if your wedge game benefits from extra spin… 😂😂😂

    These Numbers are Insufficient... Comparing these 2 golf balls. Why have your Prices Increased by $100 plus on your used golf club site since the Covid era?!?

    Absolutely proves that paying 50-60 dollars for a dozen Pro V1 golf balls is silly, the only thing that Pro V1 is better at is spin. You tried so hard to make it look like the Titleist was a far more superior ball, They are not worth the cost.

    If you are not scoring low to high 70s on a daily basis, Pro-V1 won't be your savior. Just work on your short game.
