Budget Bushcraft Overnight Camp. Kit Yourself Out For Less Than £100. Raised Bed. Irish Stew.

In this video, I set up a bushcraft camp in order to test out a basic low cost bushcraft kit.
I gave myself a budget of £100 to kit myself out with everything I would need in order to make myself comfortable in camp, making what I don’t have using the tools and equipment I bought.
After making a raised bed and setting up my shelter, I process firewood and get a fire lit so that I can cook and keep warm. A hearty dinner of Irish stew and some cozy time beside the fire - a perfect way to spend an evening.
I would love to say that I slept comfortably, however, my bed lacked cushioning - a nice soft layer of boughs or a sleeping pad would defiantly have improved things. I was, however nice and warm, thanks to the bed being elevated above the cold ground (and a warm sleeping bag!)
The kit was basic and could definitely be improved and added to, but it certainly proves that you don’t need to spend a small fortune on bushcraft gear to get started. Look in surplus stores, eBay and at car boot sales for bargains - army surplus is usually a good choice.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

A lot of people have the gear already, but don't realize it. My first camps were with cheap tarps, pocket knives and older blankets. Bushcraft, to me, is using what you have to enjoy nature. I've used tin cans as billys, gotta remember to burn em out first! I love the Mora Companion; I only have 7 of them tho, haven't got all the colors yet! I love garage sales and flea markets for finding axes and saws. Have many antique tools found like that in my kits. I don't have an army surplus store near me so that makes military gear hard for me to find, but I drive by 2 when going to visit my parents so I do haveza few items. I find 'liquidation stores' (my name for the modern dollar store) have good cheap gear that you can use for a couple trips; if you pick through what's on the shelf to find a good one. But hardware stores seem to have the best tools, tarps, and camping gear, in my area anyway, relatively reasonably priced if you buy their brand. Packs are one of those things that they really nail you for though. I bought chinese copies of 511 bags on wish that have held up so far 2yrs now. For less than 20% of what 511 wants for the same bag. But my favorite is the one that I made myself out of an old pair of work jeans. Thrift stores are another awesome spot I've found occasional gold star gear for next to nothing! Great video! I like the advice too: if you want to go out, go out with what you have and you'll quickly figure out what you want to have, and what you need.

Hack. The gloves have leather tabs inside, put a hole in them and a small karabiner so you can clip them, I use Briers all the time, great gloves. Fiskars do good saws at the same sort of price as the Laplander. I had an Italian Army pack back in the 80's, they're prone to fail after 20 years of hard use...

Great video. The amount we spend on kit is a bit like filling a pack. If you have a 50L pack your have what you need. If you have a 70L pack you have what you can bear to carry. In this case you had what you needed for less than $150 dollars. Perfect.

What a great video Simon! With all the great content on bushcraft, etc. out there it’s so easy to become paralyzed with all the options and ideas that you never get out the door. Well done showing how it’s about the plan and the doing of the thing and doesn’t have to be complicated with tons of gear. Two things: 1) a great inexpensive saw option (at least here in the states) are Corona folding saws, I use them at work and they are very good. And 2) I’m gonna just go ahead and say what has to be on everyone’s minds; when are we gonna get the video of ‘Simon’s Treehouse Adventure’??

This video is living proof that the best things in life, while not necessarily free, don't have to cost much. You just need to focus on the most essential stuff because aside from the money, you also save time from overthinking things.

Thanks for another great video to help ease us through the lockdown. I felt sure you'd add a splash of Guiness to the stew,,,, or maybe that's just a thing done in the North East. Maybe next time?

My husband started watching your channel for the camping tips. I started because of Maggie. We both watch now because it's better than any mindfulness session. Thank you and glad to hear Maggie is on the mend.

Brilliant I love your content always, but this is great info, and very considerate to spend your time and sharing your knowledge helping youngsters and people on a constricted budget to get out and appreciate nature, learning skills and an appreciation that can help us all.
