This was called a Musette when I was in the French Foreign Legion, a day pack for 24 hour patrols or an ambush when you went out with the bare basics usually just weapons, ammo, grenades, flares, 24 rations, water, poncho and cam netting. You did not expect to sleep. We had a F1 pack which was about 70L for longer marches. I think the standard full pack for the French Army is now the F2 "sac a dos" which looks excellent compared to the crap we were issued in the 80's. Merci Mec.

Have this and the smaller day pack as well, getting almost daily use in beach environment for gear and warm jackets etc once the weather changes at dusk. Also have the alpine pack as well as the huge F2 , as my collection grows, the surplus French gear is rugged and works very well for me

It is very similar to the American A.L.I.C.E pack. I personally am a firm believer in military surplus. It’s very modular as well very easy to add things to it. Like you said it’s designed to take a beating. Great video Dave

The waterproof/resistant fabric on it is nice too. If you find one that still has that fabric in good shape it is great for the rainforests.

i have the current F2 ruck, it comes with upgraded shoulder straps and a sternum strap, but you could make one easy enough. I only use mine as a day pack. you are right about the strap buckles ... i have thought about sewing on quick release buckles just to make it easier to get into.

Nice Dave, had mine since my early teens. A mate of mine got one a few years earlier from Army and Outdoors that had fastex type snap buckles instead of the threaded ones, which would be much easier to use.

@@southernlandsolo7839 hi mate, I have an ex army but no label, I think it was Dutch, for the price and practicably it's brilliant. In terms of brand we have one called Osprey. The bag I have is the longest I've ever had in terms of time and it's had a lot of use, so it's pretty robust. Would definitely get another. Cheers.

It's a nice wee pack and it works well as a day sack. I must admit that I replaced the shoulder straps. I altered mine to sit on a Swedish LK35 frame for longer trips.

  • @orraman5427

@@beezwaks I cut the straps leaving a tail of around 3"(75mm) at the top and sewed in a 30mm buckle. At the bottom of the straps I unpicked the seam on the rucksack and sewed in 25mm metal loops. By doing this I can fit surplus straps which have 25mm tails (I use Swedish LJ35? straps from the medic version of the LK35 which are padded) and use it as a daypack. I simply use 2 pieces of 25mm webbing to fix the buckles at the top of the pack to the top of the frame and tie the loops I sewed in at the bottom of the pack to the frame with 550 cord. It sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. You could simply lace the original straps through the frame, tie the big D ring to the frame at the top and tie in the two strap adjusters to the sides of the frame. I hope that helped, all the best.

Like the look of that - never heard of it. I was after a metal framed rucksack like an LK70 but they are rare as rocking horse sh*t. Have an old British metal framed SAS one from the 80's which is 110litres I think. Have slightly modified it (wider straps, Royal Marine waist belt) but if I ever filled it I would probably need an extra body. Not as fit as I used to be. I think yours is more practical.

Army And Outdoors, Auckland had these F2's in stock. They may still have some or may get another batch pass through. I can't give any comparisons with the Austrian Alice as I have never used one. I used the small and medium US Army Alice Packs in the NZDF. Compared to the US Alice, I prefer the F2 as a civilian pack.
