Budget Airlines Comparison - Allegiant vs. Frontier vs. Spirit

Budget Airlines can be a great way to fly. In this video, we'll wrap up the #LowCostCarrierComparison in which I flew with three Budget Airlines here in the US: Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit.
I flew with three Ultra Low Cost Budget Airlines (Allegiant Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Spirit Airlines) back-to-back in order to get a sense for each budget airline.
We'll take a look at Budget Airlines Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit in terms of their Booking & Fees, Crews, Seats, and Food.
Ultra Low Cost Budget Airlines like Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit focus on reducing costs and passing expenses onto customers as much as possible. This means "no frills:" Food is all buy onboard, Bags come at a cost, and even boarding cards require payment of fees to some budget airlines.
But, there are ways to beat the budget airlines' system! In fact, in this video, I'll reveal some of the secrets to saving money on US budget airlines Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit.
If you haven't seen the #LowCostCarrierComparison Budget Airlines series, here's a link to the playlist...check it out!

I've taken more flights on Frontier than any other airline this year. I've gotten some great deals and waited through some long delays (generally weather). One other difference between Frontier and Spirit is that you get 50 pounds allowance with a checked bag on Frontier and only 40 pounds on Spirit. The overage charges are, of course, stiff.

Great video! I love ultra low cost carriers. I fly all three of these all the time, I can't tell you the last time I've flown with a legacy carrier. These carriers were a game changer for me. They've allowed me to travel more frequently and even see my family more often. The right expectations are key. I don't value all of the frills of flying nor do I fly with a ton of stuff. All I want out of an airline is for them to get me from here to there and back for the lowest price possible, so I need a seat on a airplane that flies at least most of the time. Yes I know all about the Allegiant MD-80 issues, I flew in a ton of them and have been delayed a few times because of technical issues. But when you paid $50 for a ticket, let's be real here. What do you expect? So the basics are don't miss your flight because it could be the only one of the day or possibly the week, just fly with a backpack, don't add any extras, try to fly nonstop, print your own boarding pass and you'll get in return the most amazing value in transportation. You're right they are all about the same and now that Allegiant has converted to Airbus they basically all fly the same planes. Many in the comments mention Southwest, I agree they are an amazing airline but I fly for 1/2 sometimes a 1/3 of their price. We all have certain budgets for vacations and such. It's all about what's important to you. For me personally and my girlfriend for that matter, flying and rental cars isn't where we want to spend our vacation dollars. The cheaper the better, that way maybe we'll have an additional fancy dinner, an extra activity, or even an extra day.

I can confirm it is correct you can save on your ticket by buying at the airport with Allegiant. We fly Allegiant from NW Arkansas to Vegas and have always had a good experience. We also learned they consider a backpack a personal item so we've learned to pack what we need in a backpack cutting out any baggage fees.

Agreed. Plus they usually have multiple flights from the cities they serve. I got stranded in Baltimore due to a ground crew error that damaged the plane. They put me on stand by for two other flights and guaranteed me a spot on an 11:30 PM flight back to Hartford. Since Baltimore was only a 5-6 hour train ride and I would arrive in New Haven 4-5 hours before my flight I booked an Amtrak back. I sent Southwest a letter just requesting my $135 train ticket be covered. They refunded my entire return flight MSP-BDL on top of the $200 they gave in cancellation vouchers. If I need to save a buck I’ll fly Southwest.

I think Southwest offers the best value for the money, and the most enjoyable flight experience. I HATE being "nickel and dimed" with extra add-on fees, which even the major carriers are imposing for checking a bag or selecting a seat., and Southwest does less of tnat. Best of all, Southwest people love what they do, and it is always a joy to deal with them at check-in and inflight.

Example of why a ULCC makes sense.. RDU to Phoenix.. Delta basic economy $452 R/T.. Frontier $236 with a checked bag, carry on, priority boarded and a seat with 36 inches of pitch. Oh yeah AND THE FARE WAS FULLY REFUNDABLE? WHAT???!!!! This is not always the case, but ULCC makes sense when the cost is half a main line carrier for the same experience. I actually PREFER the pay for all food experience vs freebies. The selection is better, and you can order basically anytime during the flight. Also, at least on Frontier when you buy a soda you get the entire can. When you buy a bag of snack mix.. its a 5 ounce bag.

I was at a wedding once and found myself sitting next to a VP at Spirit. It was an interesting friendly convo at first, and he also told me the trick about buying Spirit tickets at the airport counter so get the lowest price, but then he tried to convince me that the onboard experience on Spirit was no different than on Delta and I wasn't having it. I respected how proud he was of his airline, and how highly he spoke of it! But he seemed oblivious to the fact that full service airlines offer more in-cabin. I brought up leg room, IFE, wifi, free snacks & drinks, seat selection. His response? "People don't care about those things." Perhaps that's true for some, but not for me.

I realize this comment is 4 years old but I love Spirit. I flew with the for the first time this year and have flown with them four times so far this year. They are always very friendly and the price is great. If I want to be picky there was a delay the last time I flew but to be honest it was due to the weather (they can't control it) and even though we bored 40 minutes late we landed only 20 minutes late so not the end of the world. I also have been upgraded each time I flew to a better seat (the first two times for free! The last two times I snagged an an exit for for only $5 more!). I find the trick with them is pack a personal bag only and let them seat you where ever.

Great series! I don't think I could ever fly one of the ultra-low cost carriers even knowing what I'd be getting myself into. It's probably more psychological, but I'd rather fly a mainline carrier. No one is perfect and things happen across all airlines. It's a matter of personal preference, I guess.

What do you think you are "getting yourself into"? Less than half the fare of a larger airline, nonstop flights with no changing concourses and waiting for connecting flights, very attentive staff, and the most user-friendly app I've ever seen. I'll take that any day.

I'm just an av geek with a crazy active mind who likes intaking (albeit sometimes irrelevent to my life but still interesting as hell and great content lol) a lot of new information, and when I'm getting that information I like it to be from a source that is objective, positive, unbiased, and looks at every possible point of view to make a decision. Lol cheers m8 sorry for the second novel

You're welcome, Jeb. Happy to help! As you know, I've tried it. The craziest part was in ACY where I bought the tickets, the Spirit employee behind the counter asked me about my origin airport. So I could've feasibly purchased tickets flying out of say PHL or EWR from ACY, which has cheap parking unlike PHL/EWR.

Great point about scheduling Jeb! I fly United most often but do fly JetBlue a lot domestically for business because I live near Boston. The JetBlue service is great but they are much more unreliable and you're stuck with their small network. UA can even book you on Delta or AA if there is a disruption in the schedule and they are much more proactive offering re-bookings through the app during delays or weather issues.
