The professional company that I had service my GB142 was great for the first few years, the guy really knew his stuff, did the mineral oil/burnoff, etc., every single year, as required. But then the company didn't have a Buderus 'expert' and sent a regular boiler guy out. He didn't clean the coils. THREE years! Finally, the original guy came out on the fourth year and was astonished how dirty and clogged everything was! Not quite as bad as the one pictured, but getting there. The tech said it was too dirty for him to clean, but I knew I could do it. I used various dental tools, etc., and wire brushes to get everything opened up again and all that calcification cleaned off. Took me a couple days/many hours. But cheaper than a new heat exchanger. The tech returned, did the regular mineral oil (was shocked how clean I was able to get it) and the company gave me a free year of service to make up for the problem tech. I had the free cleaning that next year, but then just started doing the cleaning myself. Pretty easy. Btw, yes, I still used the dental type tools for the large chunks, and small wire brushes to get most of it quite clean (better than most techs get it using the mineral oil). Also, the reason why the plastic condensation trap gets broken at the top like the one seen in the video is because techs try to remove it before removing the bottom plate. If you click the clamps and remove the bottom plate, it just slides right out of the plastic neck.

Wow! That’s a bummer that the new tech wasn’t properly trained to work on these boilers. I tried a multi tool and everything I could with this one. At that point as a tech it’s time to just recommend replacement. Very true on the condensate traps as well. Those will tend to get very brittle with time also and you can almost feel them crack in your hands even when you take them off the proper way. In NH these are nightmare boilers to run into pretty much 90% of the time. They were pushed heavily and not many were told they have to be maintained yearly. Pretty sad!

Manufacturer recommends using mineral oil on heat exchanger, burning it off on high fire then flushing out after. It does suck having to take apart twice but the clips make it very fast... it might help with those dirty ones, great video!

Hey thanks for the feedback man! I usually do run the mineral oil and do the burn off too. This one unfortunately was just so bad that I don’t think that would touch it haha.

Hey man, the best way in my opinion is to get a good visual and use camera snakes if you have anything like that. Also pull blowers in old furnaces! A lot of times you will find cracks right there. You can do over the fire draft tests to look for fluctuations when the blower kicks on and also watch for drops in co2!

A lot of guys hate these gb 142s, I don’t mind them, I think they’re actually fairly easy to work on and clean

Yeah man, I have a love/hate relationship with them I guess haha. When people take care of them yearly it’s not so bad. This one however is the perfect example of how bad I see them when neglected! I’ve made some repairs that were easy too. This one ended up being junk because it was too plugged to free up and pull the gas through the heat exchanger.

Nice. Idk what it was with this one but the stuff was so rock hard nothing I tried would break it down. What do you like to use for cleaning agent in those situations?
