The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I was in seventh grade in a Catholic school in Chicago when our teacher, a nun, announced the death of Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper in a plane crash. I was aware of the music of all three and it appeared our teacher was too. She was very solemn and asked that the class bow our heads and recite a prayer for the souls of the three departed. I still remember that scene as if it happened yesterday.

I was 13 when I discovered rock and roll when this song came out I had a baby sitter who had the name Peggy Sue and when they played this song she went bananas over this song. Just a silly little memory of my teen age years. They were the best of times with lots of soft fuzzy memories. I grew up in a two parent household! Both my parents are gone now, I have just turned 78 and I have had a blessed live. God has been good to me and I want to let God know I appreciate everything he has done for me. I am not ready to go off into the sunset just yet. I am keeping busy . Watching, waiting and listening for God's call. I am believing and trusting. Thank you God for everything.

To address the concerns of those commenting about the audio and picture quality; Ed Sullivan used kinoscopes until July 1959, when he switched over to video tape. As a result, at that time, there is a marked increase in sound and video quality. Most TV shows of the '50's were recorded on kinoscopes as that was all that was available. We are fortunate that the Ed Sullivan shows were preserved as many kinoscopes of other shows are lost. As for uploading in HD, video footage can only look as good as the source material. Whether or not someone uploads in HD, it won't truly be HD if it wasn't shot in HD, and HD didn't exist then. Some people have uploaded this Buddy Holly footage with fake HD, and by over-laying the studio recording over the original audio track, which is why their posts sound technically better. Here you are getting the footage in its original form, with live audio (not an over-laid studio recording matched up to the original live performance) and looking the way it was originally broadcasted in 1957. You have to make allowances for the technology that was available at the time. Of course, the shows from the fall of 1959 onward exist in better condition since they were recorded on videotape and the technology progressively got better. Let's not discourage them from uploading these vintage kinoscopes, because the 1950's (as well as the early 1960's) episodes of Ed Sullivan featured some of the greatest performers, and much of the footage is quite rare. I'd love to see all the musical performances from the black and white episodes.

@Joe Cosgrove Those newscasts were most likely not blurry when they were first broadcast. Tape deteriorates over time and depending on storage. I'd call it more of an early attempt at rock. It's definitely not perfected. The bass isn't electrified yet which is clearly a limiting factor in their sound. The way it's mic'ed up is just not really working. A bass in a tin can isn't really a bass. Also, the drum kit sounds like it has one mic for all of the drums. It would never be done that way, today. The drums typically have a mic for nearly everything. I don't really hear the rhythm, at all. Today, the rhythm guitar would be loud compared to everything else to, sort of, cover for the lead. The only guitar I'm hearing is the lead...and it's being played like a rhythm, TBH. There really isn't any lead, so no solo either. I wouldn't call this rock by todays standards but it's a stepping stone.
Just four guy´s having a great time. Brilliant.

So many great songs in a short career...they still hold up to this day.
There was another side to Sullivan: he could be very quick to take offense if he felt he had been crossed, and could hold a grudge for a long time. This could unfortunately be seen as a part of his TV personality. Buddy Holly became intimately familiar with Sullivan's negative side. On January 26, 1958, for their second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, Buddy Holly and the Crickets were scheduled to perform two songs. Sullivan wanted the band to substitute a different song for their record hit "Oh, Boy!", which he felt was too raucous. Holly had already told his hometown friends in Texas that he would be singing "Oh, Boy!" for them, and told Sullivan as much. During the afternoon the Crickets were summoned to rehearsal at short notice, but only Holly was in their dressing room. When asked where the others were, Holly replied, "I don't know. No telling." Sullivan then turned to Holly and said "I guess The Crickets are not too excited to be on The Ed Sullivan Show" to which Holly caustically replied, "I hope they're damn more excited than I am." Sullivan, already bothered by the choice of songs, was now even angrier. He cut the Crickets' act from two songs to one, and when introducing them mispronounced Holly's name, so it came out vaguely as 'Hollered' or "Holland." In addition, Sullivan saw to it that the line feed for Holly's electric guitar was turned off. Holly tried to compensate by singing as loudly as he could, and repeatedly trying to turn up the volume on his guitar. For the instrumental break he cut loose with a dramatic solo, making clear to the audience that the technical fault wasn't his. The band was received so well that Sullivan was forced to invite them back for a third appearance. Holly's response was that Sullivan didn't have enough money. Film of the performance survives; photographs taken that day show Sullivan looking angry and Holly smirking and perhaps ignoring Sullivan

Rock and roll late 50s what a great time for rock and roll
So lucky to have meet the Crickets after a concert a few years ago and get a picture with them. Really nice guys, sadly 2 have past since then. Rock on guys.
RIP Jerry Allison; a great drummer.
Buddy Holly was unique with his singing style and his hiccups. It was charming to hear him and he didn’t even need a microphone. He was only 22 when he passed on and God knows the heights he would have reached musically. RIP

I have performed this song both solo and in bands since around 1960. I have never seen this clip before and I wish I had a drummer like that in my band days.
A timeless masterpiece for a bygone epoch with rebellion, imagination and fantasy.Nothing can bring back memories better, than a song which he was once connected with.
It's now the year of 2021, and Buddy Holly still rocks!

The 1st Rock performer to ever wear glasses. Peggy Sue was originally called Cindy Lou and the song didn't sound right. So Jerry Allison the drummer suggested to Buddy to use his girl's name as a song title. The rest is history because the Crickets were the standard lineup for a band. Other groups followed this example and others follow this example till this day.

@@rattyeely Bo is a little bit of both. Why is it that everyone credits Buddy for being the 1st rocker to wear glasses ? Because that's what it says on most albums, CD'S and most Rock encyclopedias. This is what I always heard, if Bo is the 1st one to do that it's definitely a new one on me. Then it needs to be disputed with the Rock Historians. If it's true then they need to change that.

I had a co-worker who was named after this song. She was just "Peggy" in the workplace and I figured her name was Margaret (bc Peggy is a nickname for Margaret). But she told me, No, it's Peggy Sue, even on my birth certificate. I had another co-worker (different job) named Shirelle, after the early 60s girl group the Shirelles. Yeah, I know, enough already.

Just love how smart and well groomed these guys were. And backing it up with great music. And the confidence just came through. They knew they had something special.
Just a side story. I live in Iowa, not terribly far from the crash site. After all this time, people still come to the site and to the restaurant, or club, where they performed. There's a yearly "event", ending with a sold out show at the restaurant!

As long as I’m around this group and especially Buddy will be admired and appreciated. He was a volcano ready to explode into the 60s and we’ll never know what was coming but be do know what was done and it was brilliant! He remains an inspiration to musicians to this day and the band along with him 👌

Always glad to see you upload Buddy Holly. I hope you will also put up "Oh Boy" which is my favorite! More popular music from the 1950's and early 1960's please! I hope to also see a great number of lesser-known singers from this time period who were hit-makers during their time. You can help preserve their memories and introduce them to people who have never heard of them.

@@MostlyBrenda I would love to see all of those artists posted here! Jimmie Rodgers is a good bet since they have released videos of him in TV compilations of the past. I'd also love to see really rare footage that I've never seen before from Ed Sullivan like Linda Scott doing "Christmas Day", Joni James, Kathy Linden, Eileen Barton, Sunny Gale, the Four Lads, Billy Ward and the Dominoes, along with great tenors such as James Melton "Beyond the Sea" and Jan Peerce. They had a lot of great opera singers on the show doing pop songs as well as opera and they are very under-represented on this channel. It's astounding to me that they have never officially released any of the great performances by the Platters, including their incredible rendition of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". In my opinion, the Platters were the best music group of the 1950's due to the beautiful voice of Tony Williams, and timeless songs. Of course, I'd love to see a great many of Teresa Brewer performances, who performed on the show more than anyone else and was probably Ed's favorite female singer (and one of mine as well). Ed preferred the old-fashioned music to rock and roll. Ed frequently invited singers who were popular in the 1920's and even earlier on his show too, so there is some really historic rare footage of singers such as Will Oakland, Helen Kane, Sophie Tucker, Blossom Seeley and others, which may never be seen again. There is an incredible wealth of important and historic musical footage in the Ed Sullivan archives, much of which hasn't been seen since it was first aired. I hope someday it will all be available, and not just the more common mainstream footage.

@@MostlyBrenda Do I ever agree with you! I've been through the episode guide for the Steve Allen show, and there are many performances I'd love to get hold of. Joni James, Kathy Linden, Jan Peerce, Jerry Vale, Janice Harper and many others were on his great show too. Same for Perry Como. The copyright laws need major revision, especially on vintage footage. Entertainment is meant to be enjoyed, not hidden away. I also agree that there are so many great artists that modern generations know nothing about, largely because they aren't given play and exposure today. I really hope this channel will eventually post more obscure artists, but I'm not getting my hopes up. They might think there is no interest, but they would be wrong. People would enjoy it if they were given a chance to see it.
