He was an American classic! Anyone from that era was true class! They always dressed well and were humble, and if you met them they acted like they knew you!

God..............I Love that guy !

I love Letterman, but he has no idea how to work with Buddy. . .Buddy Hackett's appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson were SO much better, smoother and way funnier than this. Carson knew how to draw stories out of Buddy. Hackett's strength was telling stories and also telling jokes that were more than one-liners. Buddy's jokes were little stories themselves and he told them so well. Carson knew how to get Buddy started and then just get out of his way and let him go. That was Johnny's genius.

Hackett on Letterman is totally different than his time on Carson. Letterman has a list of questions to ask some I found interesting, but would have loved to heard at least one joke from Buddy. Guess he felt more comfortable on Carson's show.

don't forget that Buddy and Johnny were friends in real life, for many years in Hollywood, NYC & Las Vegas... they even used to play Golf together, not the same case with Letterman

How is there not the "Buddy Hackett Story" movie? Even a doc?

1:57 dialog is amazing, i laughed so hard but i had to go back and watch it and 2:07 again, comedy master level quick thinking right there

3:18 You never see a celebrity tell you exactly how much they are going to be making - $600,000 for 18 days of work - as the spokesman for Caesar's Atlantic City. Buddy Hackett is awesome. Most of the clips are of him on Carson, so great to see him with Dave.

Funny around the 8:15 mark Dave mentions child genius Sascha Segan who later became a writer for PC Mag, among other things

I just found this, and i can truly say that Hackett is more comfortable with Carson. Those 2 are great together. Dave nah

Buddy had appeared on Carson many, many times, so they had long-established a good comfort level. Also, they were both of the same generation, with the same cultural affinities. Both attributes were missing with Dave and Buddy, so I think there’s little wonder the chemistry would be lacking in his first Late Night appearance.

It wasn't Buddy who was uncomfortable, it was Dave. He knew damn well Johnny's most frequent guest was Buddy Hacket so having him on his own show must have almost felt like an audition all over again.

When God was designing Buddy's face He must have been watching cartoons. 🙂👍

Wait a minute! I smell a rat here! When Dave started doing the "Late Night" show on NBC after "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson," Carson told Letterman that he couldn't do a monologue, have a large band, or have people like Buddy Hackett on the show, right? So, why did Letterman have Buddy on the show almost 3 years after it was announced that Dave was going to follow Johnny on NBC?

Here's the quote from Jason Zinoman's book: "Late Night was required to work under conditions established by The Tonight Show that aimed to make the shows distinct: No monologue, no big band. Late Night needed to send a list of guests to the Tonight Show to see if they were acceptable. If they regularly appeared on Tonight Show, there were rejected." A couple of possibilities: (1) Buddy had already been on Late Night the month before (April 4) as a surprise walk-on from Live-at-Five. So maybe the restriction was relaxed since he had already violated it with no LN involvement; or (2) the restriction was relaxed overall by the show's 3rd year.

Yes, maybe you're right! Hey, do you think that you could upload something that has something to do with the "Not Tonight" and the "The Art of Stupid" chapters of the book on your channel? For example, how about the time that Letterman announced that he was going to follow Carson on "The Tonight Show?" I'm not talking about the time that he was a guest back in 1982. I'm talking about one of the last times that he was a guest host on The Tonight Show.

Most of them are already available, but not the ones from September 4, 1981, January 2, 1981, or November 11, 1980. Also, you probably didn't know this, but Dave's first guest hosting stint was not after his third Tonight Show guesting spot, but after his second guesting spot on January 22, 1979.

I assume you got that date from Wiki. It's incorrect: The guest-host on January 22, 1979 was Gabriel Kaplan. Dave's first guest-host spot was March 26. As to the TS guest dates you listed, for reasons I can't detail, I have the shows but can't make them publicly available yet.
