Kevdak and Earthbreaker Groon. Two jacked old guys who've beaten Grog to a pulp, but with significant differences. Kevdak knocked Grog to the ground with a sucker punch, then kept beating him while he was down. Groon knocked Grog across the arena multiple times, but always gave him the chance to get back up. And when Grog couldn't fight anymore, Kevdak left him to die in the mud while Groon offered him a hand up.

Honestly I feel like if he didn't have the titan stone knuckles, Kevdak would be much weaker. Weak enough that Grog or Zandor would win their challenge. Personally I think they're a crutch and if that's the truth then if he's not strong enough to lead without them then he doesn't deserve them.

I really enjoyed how Grog got gradually stronger while confronting his past, from not being able to walk to carrying Pike with one hand again

She has some very big issues

In the campaign, Dr Dranzel was Scanlan's mentor, and he and his troupe showed up at the keep once before the Whitestone arc to steal their silverware (it's implied that the group doesn't always make ends meet by their performances). Also, Scanlan's main instrument was a flute, not a lute, they probably changed it so Sam could sing along to his spells.

I think you caught it, but at 28:42, when Pike says, "But, what if I need you?" It's a direct call back to episode 4 of season one, when Grog says the same thing to Pike when she leaves the group.

And going into the next episode it hits even harder, with him not having an answer for her the same way she did. The growth for Grog is incredible in S2!!!

At this point of the campaign, the Herd of Storms had assimilated the River Maw barbarian tribe into their ranks, so you have half-orcs, humans, and others in the tribe as well.

*Gnome woman:* Insults grogs slimness. *Alicia & Ant:* I beg your f*cking pardon?!

Between Sylas and Umbrasyl I'm beginning to think you just like Matt Mercers voice. Which is absolutely fair.

Matt Mercer does the voice of Umbrasyl, and he did the voice of Silas too, so I guess you have a type? xD EDIT: The guy with a mustache wasn't a half-giant, he was a orc or half-orc. His friend was human I think. Not everyone in the Herd are half-giants, just most of them. If we went by DND rules, half-giants (or goliaths as they're called in DND) are pretty hairless; only the women have head hair, the men are all bald. But this is a visual show so I think they changed it up a little for design purposes which is why Grog's cousin has a mohawk for example. But it's probably still hard for them to grow facial hair, thus Grog's excitement in having one.

probs not just design reasons alone. they likely try to be slightly different from the source material where ever they can for legal,trademark related reasons. by source material i don't mean crit role but dungeons and dragons by the way. same reason why scanlans main spell is scanlans hand and not bigby's hand or whatever the actual spells name was, or why the only races named in the show so far are either general non-trademarkable races that you find in any fantasy story and the half giants, that are used for goliaths. of course i could be completely wrong and just talking nonsense but it makes sense to me

Goliaths(name changed to half-giants for the series) can't grow facial hair, but not all of The Herd are Half-Giants, there are some big beefy humans and half-orcs mixed in there.

In the campaing Grog had a change of heart because he saw the herd beating Pop-pop, so he intervined with the same end result

To answer the mustache thing, not everyone in the herd is half-giant, some are orcs or half-orcs wich can have beards, the half-giants are recognized by the markins in their bodies, wich are natural birthmarks

I remember seeing people talking about how Grog, when he comes back to the herd, looks just like he did when he was cast out from the herd.

So, the quick version of the half-giant-facial-hair thing: Typically, the males of Grog's race *can't* grow any hair at all. I believe that for this show, they decided to make it so males and females can both have hair on the head, just not on the face. In-world homebrew change or something. The bearded guy at the gate, as I think someone else said, was an orc. The Herd, like the Ashari tribes, aren't really a single-race-faction, but started with one (like Half-Giants for the Herd), and allowed others in that fit with their lifestyle/requirements

A hypocrite who thinks he strong by beating into submission someone lesser while licking boots of someone bigger and meaner. If he was strong and brave as he thinks he would ask his men to fight Umbrasyl and force the beast to bring him goods. Instead old man past his prime relies on a magical toy to create seaming of strengh. Also loved the reversal of season 1 conversation between Grog and Pike. “What if I need you”

Kevdak is a character that basically lives by might makes right. he recognizes the dragon is far stronger than his herd. and as such, doesn't want to tangle with it. he beats those into submission below him, bends the knee to those stronger.

@@mrksimka1159 It's a little more elaborated in the actual campaign. Umbrasyl decimated westrrun and kept going. Kevdak led the herd into westrun, conquered what's left, and then Umbrasyl came back and demanded tribute/service or he'd just destroy the herd. Kevdak agreed. but since then he got so used to ruling westrun, and not really caring about the dragon killing some of his herd when it got pissed. then grog and co showed up, and of course epic grog speeches and fighting ensued. I do hope they keep grogs 'inspiring' speech about the Herd and not cowtailing to the dragon

I actually seen clip of Grog talking to Kevdak and calling him out long time ago and I hope the "do you also squat when you piss now" part will be included in the show. So inspiring speeches and epic fight abound.

Because it’s not said in the episode and probably won’t be elaborated anywhere, Pike in Wilhand’s necklace has black hair, and to my memory in the home game the cast played before they began to stream it, Pike is killed and has to be resurrected, and that bleached her hair.

It's kind of silly to include that in the cartoon unless they're going to animate that part too, so I can only assume we'll see it in an eventual flashback. If it's not going to be something that they go into it would make more sense to just have made her always blond.

In the TTRPG Goliath are unable to grow beards, but in the animated series they called him a half-giant, so maybe it's another issue of copyright, like with the not-Beholder. That being said some of those horde members look like half-orcs, or maybe even full orcs, though that doesn't explain why his cousin has hair... unless he's of mixed blood or adopted.

I get the suspicion that Kaylie (the other Gnome) might be Scanlan's unknown daughter. He said he's been to that town plenty of times before, and she kept going in on him for "running away" and how "no one comes back to save you". Plus she looks a LOT like him.

Kevdak is the worst kind of “strong man”. Always projecting, fragile ego, dominating through fear - while cheating might I add(Titanstone Knuckles), masking insecurity with violence…yeesh

30:21 I think the reason why so many of them have beards and hair in general is either the animators not knowing the lore of the goliaths (for example calling them half giants instead of goliaths) or maybe it's like a selective breeding thing (yes Ik it sounds weird) with the strongest being able to grow hair and so hair growth becomes more common in "the herd" as they call themselves (though that also wouldn't make much sense cause' again only a small percentage of goliaths actually grow hair) I mean that and not all of the herd are goliaths. Some are human, orc, half orc and so on.

@@ericlin2611 Technically...not copyrighted anymore..as all of that was just dumped into Creative Commons. soooo heres to "Beholders" and "Goliaths" in Season 3..and i mean i kinda like "Scanlan's Hand" so really wouldn't make sense to call it "Bigby's Hand" but yeah this was made before the Creative Commons dump...so "Half-Giant" and i forget what they called the Beholder in the sunken tomb..

Goliath's facial hair is super rare, that's why grogs instant beard was such a big deal to him, lol. Those who can grow facial hair aren't super common

The Herd Of Storms is just a group of barbarians most of whom happen to be goliaths, and for the half giant goliath race they biologically can't grow facial hair so yeah, Grog is truly unique.

So, the reason grog talks the way he does isn't cause he's a barbarian? Rather it's due to the trauma of being almost beaten to death by kevdak. Damn that's raw and I like how after he tells pike his speech pattern starts changing.

technically its because on a scale from 1-20...he has a 6 intelligence (literally that was Grogs Intelligence score in the actual campaign). there is a cute scene in the game where Pike is trying to teach grog to read. He's not exactly the sharpest tool in the box...but he means well.

25:10, pretty sure that's an ILLUSION cast on a chicken. So, even if they try to grab it, they'll just pass right thru it.

i really wasnt expecting it, but god damn the grog scene made me cry too.

Yup. The goliaths are the main part of the herd and the higher ranking ones. The others are other groups that were absorbed into the herd after being given a "join or die" choice and are considered lesser ranked.

Headcanon: Kevdak's beating is why Grog has an Intelligence of 6.

The gnome scanlan meets in the town, kaylie, actually has a good reason for her sass and trust issues, but i dont wanna spoil nothing. Just get ready for an emotional roller coaster :D

Okay, first, I love how expressive your eye animations are, next, I hope they keep a specific event that happens in. Cause damned if it ain't awesome.

22:00, fighting an Ancient Dragon like Umbrassyl is a VERY tall order. But I do agree he's father is being a little B becouse he knows that without those Guantlets, his position is VERY vulnerable.

Yeah Kaylie wasn't quite this hostile when she was first introduced in the stream, but like others have said, she has her reasons for being so mistrusting (and having such an attitude toward and low opinion of Scanlan in particular compared to the rest of the band). Plus, the circumstances surrounding her introduction have been changed up a bit: Scanlan was actually part of Dr. Dranzel's (the green dude with the fancy hat) Traveling Troupe for years before becoming an adventurer (which doesn't seem to be the case here), and Kaylie was a relatively new addition when they happened to cross paths again in Emon shortly _before_ the dragon attack. She was a bit more good-humored, if still a bit sassy, but being caught up in a dragon attack and subsequent invasion in this version seems to have hardened her a bit. Personally I can't say I blame her, even if her rude behavior towards Grog is a bit uncalled-for. I've personally been looking forward to seeing her since this season started. I can't wait for these last three episodes. Or Season 3, for that matter. Did you know that Season 3's already been greenlit? It's already been greenlit. Which is good because there's no way we're taking down the entire Chroma Conclave in just three episodes. I love this show 💜

Yeah, the way I see it, Grog is basically the Trickfoots' foster kid.

Umbrasil (the black dragon) is voiced by Matthew Mercer. He also voiced Zylus Briarwood and he’s the Dungeon Master who created the whole world and all the characters (exept the player characters of corse)

There's lots of lore reasons for the beards, but the main production reason was simply to be able to tell them apart. That's why they all have different haircuts and facial hair.

Well the dragon does share a voice actor with a vampire she had the hots for so no surprise there.

You know the running in zigzag doesn't work? You're MASSIVELY increasing the amount of ground you need to cover while drastically decreasing the distance you're traveling. So not only will you make yourself exhausted much faster, anyone chasing you can just STOP shooting or whatever and just go in a straight line to catch you in seconds. Or since you're dealing with human level intelligence, they can just predict your path and shoot where you're going to be. Your best bet is to just run as fast as you can and cover as much ground as possible, preferably aiming somewhere with cover like a forest. If you're running from people with projectile weapons, your only recourse is run as fast as possible and get lucky. Zigzagging does less than nothing.

I remember making a joke saying back in PE they taught us how to run in a zig zag just incase cough( Jared) cough loses it and a tiny ass Brit had the nerve to hug me and tell she was sorry for what I went through, let me cope with dark humor not with compassion 6:16

The orc in campagin, btw, is Dr. Dra. He used to play together and travel all around tal'dorei

The Knucles improve your strength. I don't know how much it bulks up the uncle, but would not be surprised if it was a fair bit. so, yeah. in an honor-duel he should def remove them. that he don't either means he's forgotten about them(unlikely in the extreme)...or he's afraid.

Remember 2 episodes ago when this was a comedy about doing drugs and carrying around your floppy giant friend? How dare they make us feel things!

They were never really consistent about Goliath hair. Technically the males cant grow beards but its almost never pointed out by other Goliaths in the campaign, at most just kind of shrugged off by the few that do. Technically the belt shouldn’t even work on Grog as it specifies they have to be biologically capable of growing a beard to get one from it. I just think the hair things a detail Matt, the DM, didn’t really care that much about so it just kinda gets dropped.

Ok I like to clarify that officially in dnd 5e, goliaths can perfectly grow hair.... In Matt's world I'm confused cause according to him, they can't but his cousin and other goliaths are described to have hair. Now in the animated series they can't call them goliaths so the went with half-giants and they all seem to have hair.... So in the canon of the animated series they actually can have hair. Don't listen to the stream canon cause there are a lot of things that have been changed. Just follow this one to not confuse yourslefs

An easy fix for this is since they are referred to as "half giant" they could be mixed with some other race that does grow hair. Also it really seems like the ones without hair are few and far between and if they have it it's only a small amount on the top of the head. Kevdak is balding, Zanror only has a strip, and pretty much all the rest of the herd we see with hair aren't actually Goliaths/Half-Giants. The one that had the mustache near the start when the elf was being killed was more than likely an orc/half orc rather than a goliath seeing as he had pronounced tusks.

As many others have said, the Herd of Storms is mostly half-giants, but orcs and half-orcs, humans, etc can join if they're strong enough and follow the rules/traditions. And IIRC, the mustache orc called "Suda" here was in the original campaign. EDIT: I was right! Ep 51, Suda appears as a half-giant who attacked the party when they learned/remembered who Grog was. I knew the name was familiar. ^u^

I assume giving them a little hair and calling grog's kind half-giants is the way this show gets around the copywritten goliath race in DnD.

Half giants canonical, don't grow hair of any kind. In the show, I believe for legal purposes that isn't 100% accurate. Also, the herd is made up of many different races, and the man with a mustache was most likely either an orc or half orc.
