Buckwheat No Till Food Plot Smashdown

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Ultimate No Till Food Plot is an incredible way to plant food plots for any food plotter. Since the early 2000s I have enjoyed originating, practicing and forever trying to perfect the process of using buckwheat as the base in my Ultimate No Till Food Plot plantings. You can see how easily the process is and how fast you can efficiently and effectively plant your food plot, while using this decades proven technique. This is one of my most recent no till buckwheat smashdowns for one of this year's most important food plots...
*Make sure to check out how you can incorporate this food plot method onto your overall habitat and hunting design, by visiting my web class at www.whitetailhabitatsolutions...

Jeff, thanks for all the info you provide in your videos. I tried using your buckwheat no till system this year and failed. I followed your instructions exactly- I was excited with the results- until the plants got to about a foot tall. At that point, the deer on my property ANNIHILATED the buckwheat! Not one leaf was left, I couldn't keep them off it. I live about an hour north of New York city in Orange county, the deer density here is ridiculous. I'm not complaining, it's a great problem to have! Thanks again Jeff for all your help.

Thanks Jeff. My first year attempting this method. Brassicas coming in strong, WHS blend a little thin. It has been very dry in Verona county. One variation, I attach my spray boom low and in front of cultipacker. I spray and roll at same time getting good contact with spray, less over spray and takes care of two tasks at once.

Thank you, Jeff! I just seeded, crushed and sprayed my first no-till plot using your method. Sprayed with 2 qts per acre of glyphosate. Put brassicas on one half of the plot, and peas (100lbs per acre) and beans (50 lbs per acre) on the other half. Looking forward to seeing it grow! Plan to put down rye just after Labor Day on the peas/beans side. By the way, you’re 1000% right on not seeding buckwheat so early that it gets 3-4+ feet tall by the time you need to seed over it. I jumped too early and planted around June 1 (MN). It’s tough to seed over 3-4+ foot buckwheat unless you’re 6’7” or taller!

Could I spray the weeds in the plot on Sunday (so 2 days later) without the risk of it killing them? Or will the seeds have "popped" where the glyphosate would do damage?

I have also had decent luck with a slight overseeding of beans, peas, or corn. Nothing but mowing and spreading seed. I'm sure that it's more of an exception rather than a rule having that work out for me.

Hi Dan I would definitely hit the plots with tillage radish in the fall/buckwheat in the summer. In the brassica portions I often cut the brassica rate in 1/2 overall, and then add back 7-8#s tillage radish. That seems to be a great combo and it improves soil quality in many ways. Another option is to add sun hemp with the buckwheat during the Summer. The only problem is that deer crave sun hemp in most areas so that really depends on overall deer density. But sun hemp is a great soil builder! Very good mix with BW and SH.

When initially setting up for Buckwheat in a field that hasn't been planted before, is there a method/procedure for knocking back the native vegetation? I had tried growing buckwheat this year with little luck. I think it was in part to poor soil (5.5 pH) and maybe to my seeding rate being too light. I did get germination but the plants never fully matured. The deer are now cleaning what did grow up as of recently. I was wondering in all your years if you have ever tried a mustard green cover crop? It seems to have a similar structure to buckwheat and some beneficial soil building qualities.

KEO have you a great plug the other day in your mock scrapes. Those food plots look amazing. I planted on the 3rd.And they are doing real well.Out up a mock scrape yesterday and out a camera on it.Let it soak for a month and see what happens. Hopefully the bear doesn't come play with it 😠

I just got my buckwheat planted yesterday ahead of a great rain last night. It looks like tomorrow and monday nights will be very cold, but from then on, cold is behind us in the South. I know buckwheat is not cold tolerant. My question is will these next two cold, cold nights impact germination, or is buckwheat sensitive to cold only after germination???

Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here but curious if seeds you spread before crushing are just naturally resistant to the spray you put down after crushing or if the buckwheat is thick enough to protect the seeds from chemical contact? Thanks!

Hi Jeff... would it work to seed rye fairly late, mow the buckwheat after seeding, and then run the cultipacker over it? Yeah, I'd rather not mess with the spraying. Just as a total amateur, and with sketchy equipment for spraying... I'd rather skip that step if possible.

When you plant no till. Rather it’s a first planting or multiple years of no till. Do you ever add fertilizer? From my understanding plot start is your lime. Then you add plot gro later after planting.

I bought several bags of whs Northwoods whiteail fall forage, but didn't see any beams in it and didn't know what peas where in it. New to owning land. Jeff, my question shows my ignorance as what kind of beans do I put in it? Green beams or soybeans and what kind of peas do I put in it? Snow peas? Etc. What kind of peas and beans and where do I buy them as I bought almost every product Northwoods sells, but did not see beans or peas and unsure of what kind and where to buy. Local Agway or? Thanks so much for the videos over the years. Thanks, Sean

@@jimfoecking5380 thanks, finally own my own land but bought too many parcels and am probably a better state land hunter than food plotter. The food plotting is back breaking, and my skills are low. Learning though and buying a cuktipacker and fimco sprayer for next year as the backpack spraying and car tires are for the birds. Good luck on your plots. I'm really excited as God willing on the rain coming soon then I think everyone will have good growing. Ready with winter rye if it doesn't rain much. Good luck on your plots.
