This documentary is the best... I have a request... As you told us to drop the song recommendations, this documentary shows their journey from 2013 to present... you can maybe watch their songs according to the chapters... like chapter 1 includes their first album's songs .. like no more dream, we are bulletproof etc... if you ask for help then we can arrange the songs for you...

Please do deleted and extra scenes of each chapter if possible... would love that.. thank you btw😊 This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. *(Cr: "FY" on yt)* I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company. I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. *(Cr: "Shannon" on yt)* Now plz understand this 1st & 2nd episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. *(Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)*

Please remember to take 2 years off the ages they give in this series. They are using Korean ages. In this episode RM 18, Jin 20, Suga 19,JHope 18, Jimin and V 17 and JK 15. RM was already so wise... HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉

Okay, just one reminder…. The age members mention is ‘Korean Age’. So you have to subtract 2 years from the age they mention. Like RM said he was 20, when he was 18. Jin 20 when he said 22 like so.

Korea now uses international age just like everyone else. But before, on the day you were born you were considered to be one year old and then on the first day of the year you add another year. V was legally one year old on the day he was born ...Dec. 30th....and then two days later, on Jan. 1, he legally became two years old even though he had just been born.

Yes, which makes it all the more crazy that JK was only 13 when he first moved to Seoul to become a BigHit trainee. Imagine being a middle school student, leaving your family and hometown behind, transferring to a new school, moving into a 1-bedroom dorm with a bunch of older teenagers (who were total strangers at the time), and taking on what is essentially an exhausting full-time job--all as a literal child. I sometimes think his parents must have been crazy to just... let him go like that, lol. It's incredible he turned out so well-adjusted.

Exactly. Their and the labels work ethics is one of the main reazons they totally stand out in kpop as a whole. I fear this point is often overlooked when it comes to other acts who are obviously built differently bcs in the end they are all being forced to the public somehow bcs of the debt they acquire as trainees. Its just sad to me that they keep doing that in order to succeed bcs this way there is no room for passion or genuine artistic development. Im glad some companies are slowly but really starting to change their methods but there is just so much economic interests in between that music end up being the least important thing

BTS lived together in a series of four bedroom "dorms" until June 2022 when the lease ran out on their home. They now have their own homes. Over the years RM and V shared a room, Jin and Suga shared a room, Jimin and J-hope, and the youngest, Jungkook, had a room by himself. They would get 6 days off a year to spend with their families.

8:00 Yes, Seo Taiji is called the Father of KPop and the President of Culture. His socially conscious and political music pushed S Korean society into new ways of thinking. He held a 25th anniversary concert in 2017, before BTS really blew up, and officially passed the crown to BTS as worthy successors to his legacy with their intelligent and deep socially conscious music, speaking truth to power and giving a voice to youth and underdogs of the world. He did 8 songs with them at the concert and gave them the rights to do a remix of his most famous song, Come Back Home. 13:00 There is a visual storytelling device in these episodes that some people miss. They talk about hardships in the KPop training system and then show BTS doing the opposite. Talk about diets and show BTS eating out every day and cleaning their plates. If they did diet, it was self-imposed. BTS didn't have a weight quota or get graded or encouraged to compete with other trainees. They talk about having their phones restricted or checked or not having access to the internet and then show BTS vlogging unsupervised and pretty much uploading whatever they want, whenever they want, etc. BTS was trained in an unconventional way and to a large degree they were in charge of themselves. They were the only group at Big Hit, and Namjoon and Suga helped choose all the successive group members themselves and set up and influenced how training proceeded, how they scheduled their days and how they studied music and how they comported themselves. Every member is passionate and driven and worked themselves very hard. j-hope is their performance leader and is a large part of why their performances are so tight and amazing, as well as being the emotional glue for the group at home. There was not a competitive atmosphere among trainees at Big Hit, although there were more trainees initially before the lineup was finalized and the others were let go. Instead, PD Bang and Namjoon set up a brotherhood system of mutual support and affection, a "we're all in this together" camaraderie. Instead of competing, they lifted each other up. If someone was struggling, others would talk with them, they would try to adjust their training to address problem areas and find opportunities for them to shine. They even sent Jungkook to the US to train alone for a short time when his dance progress stalled. Former trainees who trained with BTS all say the same things "It was the best time of my life" and that their biggest regret is not missing out on fame and money, but rather not being together with the guys anymore. The thing they get jealous about is seeing how close they all still are and missing them. Yes, they did have arguments and Bang PD taught them that whenever there was a disagreement, even if it was just between two of them, they had to solve it and talk it out all together as a team. He taught them not to be afraid to speak their minds and to hash things out and not to let things fester, even with him and their manager and so forth. They also all would go up in the roof of the building where they rented their offices on one floor when the company was still small, with all their staff (just 10 people) and BTS could stand on a raised ledge above them and shout their grievances with their boss or the other adults. It was spirited and serious but also light-hearted and they would all get things out of their system and laugh together. Also, remember to subtract 1-2 years to the ages they state because they are using S Korean age counting system. They discontinued that last year, so not S Korea uses global age counting. Their actual ages at debut were JIn - 20, RM - 18, Suga - 20, j-hope - 19, Jimin - 17, V - 17, Jungkook - 15. Jungkook was 13 and still in middle school when he moved into the crappy, moldy and buggy dorm apartment that the guys called their "Rap Den."

What you said about the 'kpop' label I really agree with. It's one thing to talk about the kpop industry, because it's a specific industry that operates in a specific way. And I guess it's kind of necessary to have a label to introduce Westerners to the concept of listening to music that isn't in English. But when it comes to individual artists I don't like to limit them to kpop as a 'genre' because what does that even mean? Kpop is not a specific genre or sound, it covers all sorts of genres. BTS for example started out as a hip hop group, most of their influences are hip hop artists, and they've collaborated with many Western rappers. Over time they expanded to work in genres like pop, R&B, neo-soul, EDM, ballad etc. They're popular all over the world, so why shouldn't they be measured alongside Western artists in those same genres? Why should they be separated into a special category of 'kpop'? One of the main reasons people give is the concept of 'kpop idols' who are stereotyped as just being pretty models who are selected by a big company, told which songs to sing and how to live their lives, kept under harsh contracts and trapped in debt to their companies... and there is truth in that, that definitely happens in the Korean music industry and it's a problem which should be taken seriously, but it doesn't apply to every artist. For example BTS write the majority of their own music, they were never in debt to their label, they were never controlled in their personal lives, and it's clear to see from all their behind-the-scenes content that they are highly self-motivated in creating their own art and their own careers. They started underground, joined a small label and worked for years to get noticed... yet these stereotypes still follow them. I've lost track of the amount of journalists or just random people who assume they must be some kind of empty-headed dancing puppets controlled by a cynical CEO, or call them 'identical robots' or immediately start talking about 'the dark side of kpop' before doing any kind of research. Also the American music industry is full of all kinds of abuse and bad practices. For example when BTS collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on Butter, they had to postpone the release because she was fighting an unfair contract with her label which would have allowed them to steal her profits from the song - meanwhile BTS had no such problem, they already had a good contract with a fair profit split. Or what about Taylor Swift having to re-record all her albums? What about the abuse of Kesha, Britney Spears and so many others? I remember when a prominent kpop star sadly killed himself a few years ago, there were a flood of articles about how this was some unique 'kpop problem', as if the person in question hadn't spoken for years about suffering from clinical depression, and as if there hadn't been multiple American stars who killed themselves in the couple of years before that. I'm not saying there aren't serious issues with the kpop industry, there absolutely are, but there are so many cases of American pop stars who are controlled, abused, harassed etc. and there are plenty of Korean musicians who are legitimate creative artists with something to say. It just seems really hypocritical to put such narrow stereotypes only on kpop artists and always keep them in a separate box. BTS themselves have spoken a lot about the concept of being an 'artist' vs being a kpop 'idol'. They bring it up in several songs, including their single 'Idol'. Some other lyrics which spring to mind: 'Do You' by RM - "in life, a defined genre is a trap just like in music" 'Awakening' by RM - "yeah fuck you I'm an idol / used to hate it but now I love to get that title" 'Agust D' by Agust D (aka Suga) - "this kpop category ain't big enough for me" 'Daechwita' by Agust D - "this country's too small to hold me in" Actually maybe you'd enjoy reacting to those songs? It's hard to know where to start with BTS since they have 400+ songs, so you might as well just dive in at random points for now and those are some great tracks!

hopefully you continue reacting to the series cause youll learn so much more. but when you said wheres the "kid" class. majority of korean kids REGARDLESS if they become kpop stars or actors or just pursue a regular job. none of them have "kid" class. even without being in the kpop industry kids study 15 hours a day. so much of our media in the west frames kpop as this bad evil thing that doesnt allow kids to be kids when regardless they wont get that time to be a kid so might as well let them do what they love like singing, dancing or acting etc this is not a kpop issue its a korean society/asian society issue. the "kpop industry is so bad" crowd always frame society problems as kpop problems. more chapters will go more in depth but every thing wrong with kpop is actually happening in ALL parts of korean society. from the diets or the plastic surgery to the all work no play to the curfews to the strictness, to the respect for elders no matter what etc etc so many say "the kpop industry is so bad they force kids to have diets" when yes its a problem but actors also deal with that as does many parts of the general public. there are parks with signs telling people to lose weight and if they cant fit their leg through a bar then they have to diet. so many teens are GIFTED plastic surgery by their parents on their 19th birthday so they can look more pretty/handsome to be accepted for a college or job. its never been a kpop issue. so westerners framing it that way invalidates ALL the people who deal with that but arent kpop idols.

if you wanted to check out the songs per chapter for this one it is We Are Bulletproof pt. 2, and also check No More Dream and Attack of Bangtan (check the one with eng sub) coz the early BTS songs sometimes don’t have subs in the Hybe/BangtanTV channel.. but most 2015 up already have.

No you're right. BTS members have fought a lot over the years. They've never hidden that fact so no ARMY would ever claim otherwise. I think if they ever claimed that everything was perfect and they've never fought in all of those years, any rational person would side eye them like "Yeaaaah that's unlikely". But I think over time, they've put a lot of work into strengthening their system for overcoming those situations. Their CEO, Bang PD, came up with the system but the guys really took it to heart and implemented it well. And yes they really put in a lot of work as trainees with no guarantee that they would debut. With bigger companies, they go through a similar thing except it's more of a case where the company decides that the trainee isn't a good fit and they get cut or they may decide that the group isn't doing well enough to debut and scrap it. With BigHit, they believed in BTS and thought they could do well and they wanted them to debut but they didn't have the resources to be sure that it would definitely happen. We didn't find out about this until recently (after this series was created), but there had come a point where things got so bad that the company told the existing members that they had to leave because they didn't have the resources to keep them on. But the rapline refused to go since they felt had no where else to turn to as they didn't have much money and they wanted to keep the team together. They were lucky to get an invester who swooped in and saved them so they'd have enough to continue long enough to debut and try to make some of that money back.

When BTS debuted the label had a debt of ca. 100 Billion Won aka. 75 Million USD. They did cut trainees but with that money they would not have been able to keep them. I don't think they cut trainees these days but sometimes they leave on their own - especially if another label offers them a place in a group that is in the pre-debut phase. Because even if you are not cut loose after a group debuts that you trained for but weren't choosen for you can not stay forever in these in-between space. And than there are cases like the new girlgroup that is going to debut soon - I'm a little confused under which label and if they are a HYBE group but I may just have missunderstood something - where they are in that phase but the contract was ended with one of the girl chosen to debut. The reason is unknown.

for me what was different with kpop was, with other artists, i wasnt curious about them as people, about their life. but korea has variety shows, that idols go on, so its also other forms of entertainment outside of music. kpop was the first time i actually went to learn peoples name, date of birth, just knowing basic knowledge about them , and liking certain people personality on tv. also, i got to adore and like kpop idols of groups that i didnt like because they werent my type of music, so even if i didnt like their music per se, i still liked watching those idols on programs and still knew a lot about them. and i was less about music for me, i rarely had kpop songs on my real playlist, but i do have korean songs on. so music that i actually like and have on my daily playlist, i rarely went out my way to search info or learn about the band or people. so kpop for me became entertainment.

I became a BTS fan in 2016 bc i was asian and there were a a loy of asian kids in my middle school. It felt amazing seeing them grow so big and it always brings me nostalgia. I stopped keeping up w them in 2019, but their journey is always so nostalgic for me. It's so nice having a popular asian celebrity who's known internationally, coming from someone who grew up w out that much asian representation in media in the u.s. I came into highschool trying to copy hair styles from justin bieber and western artists (which didn't work on me) and I came out with a hair cut that actually suited asian guys. It's so inspiring how they came from zero to everything, and i def agree with what you guys said in the beginning.

if you are watching this documentary i suggest to go from their debut album to most recent ones the chapter of this documentary are actually song title released in the time line that video is showing so u can follow the whole journey see them evolve and as for song requests everyone will suggest the most popular ones so ill suggest b side songs which are fan fav or atleast my fav there is a saying among army bts finds u when u need them the most and when i heard their song- paradise as a new fan it made me feel like yeah this song found me when i needed it. another song- if we rule the world is actually i love the live performance and how the engage the crowd in this song alot and people dont find this song until way deep in the bts rabbit whole so if u react to it do a live performance

37:45 Totally...BTS themselves have said that they fight, and especially at the beginning, but it was the fighting and dedication to repair and solving the conflicts that made their bonds really tight and strong. BangPD has said this before, if you want to get closer you have to be willing to fight, but his one rule was they had to solve the conflict as a group.

8:58 I'm late into the conversation and I know you've already watched ep 3 which addresses this, but because SK is so competitive there isn't really "kid class" or time for kids to be kids. BTS addresses this in their 1st 2 title tracks No More Dream and N.O...but like a Korean reactor I watch has said, the time and effort that trainees put in isn't unique to that industry. Their peers, also put in that same amount of time and energy with their studies. When I was a English tutor one of the Korean dads I taught said his 12 yo comes home close to midnight most nights, and it isn't that he pushes her to but the pressure/fear of not falling behind motivates her to do it. It's like the opposite of peer pressure here in North America, she actually fights her dad to be able to go to these after school classes/cram schools.

11:04 RM didn't formally audition for BTS, BTS as a project was actually created around him. Around 2009 he auditioned for a different project, and was noticed by Sleepy, who mentioned him to PDogg (a producer at BigHit) who then recommended him to BangPD. BangPD had a meeting with RM and signed him on the spot, and that's where the idea of creating BTS came from. Originally it was supposed to be a HipHop crew, not Idol music at all, hence why the 1st 3 members are rappers...

I just want to let you know (because ARMY knows but newbies won’t click to it) that both the title of the series ‘Rise of Bangtan’ and the title of each individual episode is also the title of a song from BTS’s discography. As an aside, last year we took the song ‘Rise of Bangtan’ (aka Attack on Bangtan) to number one on iTunes in Grammy week - because we can, and because f*k the Grammys😉

The point of putting the other artists in this video is to show the difference between BTS and other Kpop artist particularly the training they went through. So when others say things like they were put on diets and exercise programs that is their experience but as Hitman bang said BTS we’re given freedom to everything and allowed to develop their talents and their lifestyle for themselves within some boundaries and guidance from the company. Just one of the reasons BTS is very different from the others. BTS were writing their own songs from the very beginning whereas most of the other groups were given their material and just had to perform on the stage.

K-pop is not a genre. It is an industry. Westerners mistakenly called it a genre. In K-pop, you have hip-hop groups and soloists, rock groups, ballad singers, alt-rock, pop groups, and every other kind of music you could think of. And this music industry is closely tied to K-dramas (idols as actors), k-beauty, k-fashion.
