That freshman from Minnesota and South Carolina's bench was the dagger in the heart of the Hawkeyes. The beginning of the game looked like all Iowa. They just couldn't keep up with SC's depth. Iowa lost the rebound battle 2 to 1 or worse.

It was the rebounding. SC had 18 offensive boards where they put 12-13 back up as lay-ups. 24-36 points as a second chance opportunity at the rim constantly is a huge swing. You can’t coach someone to be 6’7”. They didn’t play like the better team, they played like the tallest and they won because of it. Without those rebounds, specifically, SC had a lower FG% and 3% than Iowa. Bench points didn’t matter because of minutes played and Iowa’s starters were used to the pace, but it was their 3rd game against the top 3 rosters in less than 6 days where they played very close to a full 40 with their starters in each one. So, maybe they were fatigued too, while SC was rested. Could be. The biggest outlier is that rebounding differential, which is directly influenced by the height.

Congrats to USC, their rebounds won them the title. Their length did the job while Iowa didn't have length. Even so, we are talking about IOWA, a state and school in small town USA, making the final twice. Yes, no championship, but champions they are regardless. Now CC22 has gotten millions of people who would have never watched the W to watch, albeit many are doing so to spite CC and so support other teams. But it was CC22 who got it all rolling. This is not about hate, but without SC's length that coach wouldn't be praised.
