During an interview with Esquire Magazine in 2020, when Spring Day’s message was brought up, Jin stated: “It is about a sad event, like you said, but it is also about longing”. So yes, they hinted very subtly that it is about the Sewol, but only the MV since the lyrics weren’t written with the tragedy in mind.

bts have confirmed it and so did their producer pdogg. also regardless they didn't deny it and the families and victims see it as a tribute its not a theory it IS what it's about.

Not the song. It’s about losing friends - for SUGA, the same friend mentioned in Dear My Friend. For RM, the friends he lost contact with after moving to Seoul. The MV is what is tied to the Sewol incident, although BTS hasn’t ever confirmed that either.

Watch the explanation video by the Italian Army. BTS and their company donated to the families of the Sewol tragedy anonymously because the government at that time were black listing celebrities who were making music or protesting the government’s role in it.

I watched a video about the tragedy itself and it's so sad. First the ship was not up to code for sailing. It was overpacked with cargo that was not strapped down along with a few other things. They passed through an area where the water was choppy to save time, leading to the ferry tilting. It capsized because of the unstrapped luggage rushing to one side and not enough water at the bottom of the ferry. The captain put a message to play over and over again on the boat PA system that said to stay where you are. So the students along with their teachers obeyed. The captain then abandoned the ship. A few crew members stayed behind and tried to evacuate everyone but they also eventually drown. There were times when students could be seen through windows on the outside calling for help but could not be reached. There was no one qualified to rescue them- fishermen came in to help. Help from a nearby US ship was denied even though they had resources and trained personel for rescue operations like this as it was seen as a sign of weakness. The parents were kept in the dark because they didn't want them to know that they could not rescue anyone. It took a long time after to recover those lost and divers had to volunteer to do it. I know I missed out lots of points but it had me in tears. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your reaction.

If you watch ITALIAN ARMY SPRINGDAY EXPLAINATION. You will clearly see every detail in the Spring Day video is symbolic, meaningful and relevant. It leaves no doubt that the music Video refers to THE SEWOL FERRY TRADGEDY. Only the Italian ARMY documentary gives a complete picture but it is likely to be very traumatic and sad. So I advise care ad anger with no where to go can lead to depression. The Sewol Ferry disaster made me very very angry.

Great reaction to these videos. You did pretty well, but of course, of course, there is a LOT more, which no one could possibly be expected to know without more research. Others have advised on an explanation video to watch so that you can clarify it all. All I will add is : make sure you have a lot of hankies - a LOT. I've seen this (and the explanation, and live performances, and the MV) dozens of times and always weep! Also will say that this song is not important to Korea because it has been on the charts since it was released, but has been in the charts constantly because of its deeper meaning (but perhaps that's what you meant). It is a very sad song, abou missing a good friend who you cannot meet again now for months, until the Spring. Rm was feeling this melancholy when he was in a park and wrote the lyrics. Several things were changed, focussing it from a sad Autumn day to an anticipated Spring day, but the sentiment is indeed very strong. Another reason for its power and longevity is that it is a young person's song, with a young person's sense of loss and deep sadness. Once you see the explanation, you'll see why this is so poignant. The MV takes a different slightly sharper focus than the simple song itself, and uses the song to explore other very harsh issues. Be prepared. No one is ever ready.
