Black Swan is why this 73-year-old woman is here tonight; so let me tell you my story. Normally, I only watch the opening monologues of the late-night US talk shows; hardly ever watch the music guests. But on a late September 2020 evening, I ended up looking at a BTS performance (“Black Swan”) on the Jimmy Fallon show and was amazed at the creativity and skill of the choreography, dancing, lyrics, and vocals. The substance of the lyrics, a dark fear of losing one’s passion for their art contrasted with determination to survive, obviated simplistic analysis. So I looked them up, having no idea what K-pop is. I come from a music family; my dad was a jazz musician who became a music teacher. I was a classical musician in my youth; never got in to rock-n-roll in high school nor any form of rap or pop music since my youth. Certainly what I experienced that night in September was way beyond anything I’d ever imagined a pop/rock group could do. It was performance art and opened me up to new experiences in the arts; to recognizing that rap can be spoken word poetry. I’ve been devoted to modern/contemporary dance for decades; I know outstanding dance when I see it. After watching this performance, I looked up the “Black Swan” MV, and other pieces of theirs and then more and more. Before I had even read a reference to going down the BTS rabbit hole, I knew what was happening to me. I hadn’t been listening to music for months and desperately missed live dance and theater. One comment I read online was someone talking about how their 70-year-old grandma had become a BTS fan, and this young person couldn’t understand why. Age is never a barrier for art. Anyone who has spent decades of their life steeped in modern dance, experimental theater, and other types of performance art will recognize the quality of the BTS performance work. And all we human beings can have an aching hunger for deep, intense performance brought to life in this dark pandemic time, no matter how old we are.

Absolutely loved your story! Thanks for sharing it! Part of what makes life so interesting & enjoyable is sharing life experiences with others. And falling down the BTS rabbit hole is a path millions have been down! I've seen many great groups & musicians come & go in my lifetime, but am quite convinced these guys will go down in music history as the most impactful group ever given how they've truly impacted people's lives for the better.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story. I believe every single army in the world can relate to your experience. Some people might say Army is just a Kpop fan but truly BTS has got something really special deep inside and the moment when you see and feel it, it’s like a discovery of a new world that you’ve never experienced.

How wonderful to hear from you! I'm in my 50's and sometimes feel embarrassed to admit to my mum (70's) how much I absolutely love these young men. They've been such a big part of my life for the past 6 months (new Army) that she eventually started to look into them. She can now name them but can't yet tell Jimin & Jin apart! They have given me a love of music again, however only their music holds my interest these days. I pray for them (seriously) to remain healthy and to keep going. We really need them!

A lot of people talked shit about their (all 7) looks not realizing that they were still growing into themselves. What hurts me the most is how much those comments affected Hobi. He took them so much to heart that he has Mang wear a mask. It reminds me of what Tae said. “BTS is made of seven members. You can’t love only one of us.”

This was the last time the boys performed in front of a live audience. It's hard to believe we're going on almost 2 years but this performance was absolutely stunning and I know the locals in the US audience lost their shit over it. Map of the Soul: Persona and MOTS:7 really showed Namjoon's glowup in the best way. Since ON and Black Swan were released he quickly turned into one of my biggest bias wreckers but they're all so damn handsome here that it's hard to pick just one.

Yea its contemporary dance. When I first got into BTS (2018) and watched 1 of their dance practices, Jimin was the first member that stood out to me in thinking he's had some type of formal technique dance training. His movements are just so fluid yet controlled and precise and expressed with so much emotion from the tips of his fingers to the tips of his toes. And being an ex ballet dancer, I was able to pick up on that very quickly.

Same here although for me it was a live performance of BST and the way Jimin positioned his feet that caught my attention and caused the subsequently dive down the rabbithole. I dabbled in some jazz ballet as a young teenager and all our warm-ups were done at the bar in typical ballet fashion. So it wasn't hard for me either to pick up that he must have had some sort of classical dance background. It's strange that once you learn the basic ballet positions, it's so hard to let go. Even today, many many years later, my husband makes fun of me for always standing in 3rd position 😂 Jimin is one of the most alluring and mesmerising dancer I have ever seen in my life. He is like a chameleon, but dance wise. Just has the IT factor.

You should go back and re-watch the MV of Black Swan and the behind the scenes making of the MV too to see a bit more of him dancing as this is a tiny stage and choreo had to be adjusted. At the age of 60 I've found something I've been missing for decades and I'm in awe of the BTS members' talent, work ethic and humble sincerity. When James cordon said ,. Unusual guests was at the UN. I understood what he meant . No other speakers were there from the various industries , just the world leaders and the leaders of the UN assembly etc and then bts . They were only allowing necessary people in cause of the pandemic and according to the UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY , BTS WAS NECESSARY ., YA IT WAS FREAKING UNUSUAL , REMEMBER JAMES IS FROM BRITIAN , UNUSUAL IS THE CORRECT WORD THAT BRIT WOULD USE . ITS NOT MEANT NEGATIVELY . BTS AT THE UN WHEN NO OTHER PEOPLE WERE ALLOWED TO BE THERE CAUSE OF PANDEMIC SO THE WORLD LEADERS REQUESTED FOR BTS PRESENCE , FUCKING WORLD LEADERS KNOW WHO BTS IS , THATS INSANE! THE FACT THAT EVERY WORLD LEADER AND ALL ITS PEOPLE IN GOVT KNOWS WHO BTS IS , IS MINDBLOWING . IT WOULD HAV BEEN GREAT IF CORDON JUST SAID THAT BTS IS REALLY A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH , BUT HE IS A COMEDIAN , HE MUST SAY SOMETHING THAT IS COMICAL , UNFORTUNATELY HIS GREAT JOKE WAS SLAMMED BY IDIOTS WHO ARE ALWAYS WANTING TO ATTCK , AS LAWAYS , GIVING THE ENTIRE FANDOM THE TOXIC LABEL
