Ashwinji, you are doing a wonderful job explaining to your flute fans some of the basic concepts, which are so essential to know for all bansuri enthusiasts. Just want to mention 2 points. It is also essential for all flute players to know something about flute harmonics. I did the following video several years ago: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imSdr5uTZ6_SfZs.html The second point (not for everyone here!) is to whet the appetite of those more analytically inclined. You mentioned, in relation to just intonation, the “cycle of 5ths”. This cycle produces multiples of the ratio “3/2”, giving you successively 3/2, 9/8, 27/16, etc (pa, shudh re, shudh dha, etc..). However, the just intonation used in Indian music is a combination of the 3/2 cycle, the 4/3 cycle and the 5/4 cycle. Reason is this. The 4th in the “3/2” cycle is 81/64 for shudh ga. However this fraction is getting complicated. Our ears prefer simple ratio of numbers. So shudh ga is taken as 5/4, which is equal to 80/64, slightly less than 81/64. Similarly, the shudh ma produced by the 3/2 cycle will represent too complex a fraction. The ear prefers 4/3 which is very close to it.

Is the this also similar to sympathetic vibrations of a string to which it has a harmonic likeness? Like Sa has to Pa ? Kinda similar to when sitar chikari strings tuned properly to a Raaga aroha sargam notes can produce wonderful harmonics soothing to ones ears. Very nicely explained, thanks.
