    - Thanks for the comment! I have two of them and they are definitely my most-used active DIs. One tip - when using them with active acoustic guitars, I sometimes find it useful to engage the 20dB pad - this tames the signal a bit and the lower input impedance helps to make the guitar sound a bit warmer. All the best with your business, and be gentle on your back!!! :)

    Thanks Bruno, a good presentation of this DI. I've just bought 3 of these units as I'm going back into PA Hire after a 30 year break. This DI appears to be an 'industry standard' for many hire co's and with the versatility it provides you can see why. Steve Monk, Abbey Audio Nottingham UK

    - Thanks for the question. A passive electric guitar plugged into effects pedals actually results in an active system because the pedals themselves are battery powered, hence it would be best to go with a good passive DI such as the Radial JDI.

    - Thanks for the info. What sort of output connector are you using on the monitor? Some of these powered monitors have speaker-level connections on the back which can do damage if connected to the wrong input! If it's an XLR output you *should* be ok. Also, ensure that you are running into the line level input on your mixer and not the mic input. If the output on the monitor is an XLR male, this means you will need a female XLR to TRS cable.

    So this particular set up is to run from the on stage powered moniters which Carry the stage levels for the band (vox, guitar etc,) into my Beringer 802 mixer for my in ear monitors as there is a limited number of stage monitors. I've run a balanced line/TRS cable as well as a line cable from the powered monitor direct to the behringer and it comes thru the in ears distorted. Dunno the make of the system but stage monitors are powered.

    - Thank you, glad the video was helpful. Not really - DI boxes are designed for use with instrument and line-level sources, not microphones. In addition, all professional microphones already have a balanced output, so a DI is not needed. What sort of mic do you need to connect to your mixer?

    nice video. I am building a subkick for my kick drum in hopes of being able to get a mixer to add just a hint of resonance to the kick drum. I discovered I will need a DI box to balance and dampen the hot signal. I ordered a cheap one off eBay before I learned I should buy an "active" DI box because the cheap passive ones will not result in good lower bass frequencies passing to mixer. I don't know anything about sound engineering. Please suggest cheapest brand and model DI box that would be great at very low frequencies...The drum kit it permanently set up behind a 4' high wall which killed the resonance of the kick drum. This is why I am exploring the subkick to mixer to add resonance. ..thanks

    @GLBProductions

    OneArchetype A good question - the user manual for the unit does not state that performance will differ on battery vs. phantom power, so the answer in principle is no. I'm just wondering - is there a reason why you can't plug your signal source directly into your recording interface? Does it have any 1/4" connectors or only XLR?

  • @OneArchetype

    @OneArchetype

    GLB Productions I'm using a M-Audio Delta 1010lt soundcard. It has 2 mic inputs, with adjustable pre-amp levels, and 6 RCA-type inputs (and the same outputs as well). It does not have an input suited for instrument level. I am trying to record a electric guitar with passive pickups directly into the interface and the sound is a bit muddy and lacks clarity.

  • @GLBProductions

    @GLBProductions

    10 жыл бұрын

    OneArchetype Ah yes, in that case you need some sort of DI box. The muddy sound you are getting is the classic sign of an impedance mismatch. I have personally used this model DI on both battery as well as phantom power and could not detect a difference in the sound. It's possible that there may be slightly less headroom when using battery power, but the AR-133 can operate on phantom power as low as 20 volts so presumably this is not a major issue.

    Can the output of the BSS AR133 be used with fixed line level inputs like the inputs 3 and 4 on the new focusrite scarlett 4i4 3rd gen? Or is it mic level output as well like the Radial JDI Passive DI?

  • @GLBProductions

    According to BSS the maximum output of the AR-133 is +9dBu so yes it can drive a line level input. Bear in mind though that the actual output level will depend on the input level.

    Thank you for the review! I am planning to buy a DI-box for my home recording studio. I have a Fender American Standard Stratocaster, and I wonder, which Direct box would be okay for such a guitar, to hear all the needed frequencies, so that it doesn't sound muddy? • @nokiatunerr

    GLB Productions well, at the moment I am using M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface and record into sequencer on my computer, but I am planning to use a DI-box box, mixing console and a built-in audio card by RME (I have two audio interfaces at the moment, because the RME doesn't have preamps, so I record microphone to RME through DBX mic preamp, and electric guitars through M-Audio, into its instrumental input with only 250 kilo ohm impendance I think I am going to save some more money and buy this BSS direct box, since it' considered one of the best. If I buy a cheap thing, I may regret about it later :) But I found another rather interesting DI-box - not a very cheap one - BBE DI-100X. Have you ever encountered this one? Can you say anything about its quality? Thank you

  • @GLBProductions

    @GLBProductions

    9 жыл бұрын

    nokiatunerr Thanks for the info. You should be able to get good results just with your Fast Track Pro - 250 kilohms is actually high enough to record electric guitar. For example the Radial J48 has only a 220kohm input impedance. I haven't used the BBE DI box so can't comment on how it sounds, but BBE generally make good quality gear.

  • @nokiatunerr

    @nokiatunerr

    9 жыл бұрын

    GLB Productions Thank you, buy the way, do you know which is the output impendance of the Standard Amercian Stratocaster? As far as I know, it's around 6-7 kiloohm. But there are many direct boxes that have even 1 Megaohm impendance! So why so much? Maybe that's more for live performances on stage, while for studio work that would be way too much? I heard somewhere you said in this or another video that the impendance of guitars can be around 600 or 700 kiloohms, but maybe I got you wrong

  • @GLBProductions

    @GLBProductions

    9 жыл бұрын

    nokiatunerr The exact output impedance would depend on what pickups are in the guitar, but it would typically be in the tens of kilohms. The 1-megohm 'standard' for DI boxes is a way of 'playing it safe' - some companies (such as Radial) feel that such a high input impedance makes electric guitars sound 'glassy' and somewhat unnatural, hence why they chose 220 kilohms for their top of the line J48. Guitars equipped with unbuffered piezo pickups (usually acoustic guitars) can have output impedances in the hundreds of kilohms, which is why you need very high input impedances on DI boxes designed to accept these instruments, up to 10 megohms. Of course, the best DI boxes have adjustable input impedance, which Radial calls 'drag control' :)

    I would purchase a standalone mic preamp, or even a cheap mixer - you could probably find one used for under $100. One of the old Mackie or Yamaha boards.
