BSA Gold Star - A Year On

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Who thought it would be such a controversial motorcycle ? I loved it from the first time I saw it. But I looked at it with my eyes wide open and for what it was. A modern take on an old bike. As such it was never going to live up to the expectations of the old guard. But this is a recreation built to a price, unlike others such as the Norton commando or even the triumph Bonneville. The main question for me was of course the senses test.

    My Black one was delivered on the first of March its now had its first service and has given me nothing but joy. I took the Interceptor out first and really liked it but the Gold Star being a single has so much more character. I've upgraded the shocks taken off that ridiculous thing on the handlebars and might next year get some bar end mirrors to replace those Mickley Mouse one's. Just love it.

    The bike suffered because it took too long to finally come to market and there's been a lot brand snobbery. But I think it looks great and most reviews have been really positive. I'd love to see you get one.

    TEC,Hitchcock's are doing parts for it so must be good & plenty of BMW 650 Funduro around still going with 100,000 plus km.I was wondering if numbers are low on purpose to keep it special & prestigious which is a marketing plan. If I got one I would be checking inside petrol cap for rust & probably put rust kill on it as soon as I got it home. A few people complained about that but isn't a major. The Tec guys had paint peel around edge of tank but I don't think every bike be like that like Re 350 Fillingham Red with Thum 👍 print the odd bike. The engine is tried & tested & last for ages.My big gripe is all the bikes should of had polished engine casings but if you want that get the Silver Sheen model & not a deal breaker.Golden Oldie got a few different bikes & has got one & loves it.The best bike is the one you're sitting on.

    Thanks Mr TAYM. These days there aren't many big singles you can buy new and those you can are often adventure or off road bikes, so hats off to BSA for producing a bike that those who enjoy the special character a big single can ride as an everyday bike. It's interesting to watch videos and hear the opinions of those who have ridden them, but you don't get the feel and the true sound of the bike on video so I think you have to ride one yourself before making a judgement on it. I'm looking forward to getting a chance to ride one myself. Cheers, Mick

    Morning Mr TAYM. As you know, I have done a fair few miles on the GoldStar (3 vids). I wasn’t sure on the first ride, but that might have been due to it being released in the middle of Winter, on salty, gritty, slippery roads. The second outing in much better weather, was more enjoyable, but I still didn’t think it was as good as the Interceptor. I will be taking it out again next year, but even now, looking back, I just can’t think whether I would buy one. It’s not a bad bike at all, and yes, my reviews had lots of undeserved hate comments from numpties. The only thing which spoils the looks for me, is the tarnishing on the exhaust behind the foot pegs, which can be found on all of the ones I have seen. As for the sound, as a rider, you just get air intake, so I would definitely remove the baffle ! I found the rear suspension to be plush, and certainly better than the original one fitted to the Interceptor, which were rubbish at best. Yes, it’s a good bike…..but I can’t figure whether it’s a great bike. Still haven’t seen many on the road, don’t know why. Maybe the dealer network (or lack of) has something to do with it. Nice review again.

    I agree Ian I did meet a guy earlier this year who had bought one and I ask how it was , he said that he found the finish not great i.e he felt he had to polish the paintwork on the forks and other areas because it was a bit rough the chain guard was poor so he was going to change that he also mentioned the exhaust "why not a chrome one I wonder " in brief just not quite there finish wise, and he was an ex Harley owner take from that what you will 😉👍

    It really annoys me that we have people now complaining about the radiator!!. It has to comply with new regs. Why not also complain about the brakes being discs instead of original drums, and the fact that it doesn't leak oil and is reliable.?.. i reckon some people live in the past too much and would rather be riding the old bikes that leaked oil, had to be repaired at the side of the road and had crap brakes...i know what I'd rather ride!.. my only beef is the lack of a centre stand. Ive been riding now since 1974 and i really like most of the modern stuff. Great review once again taym.. I've watched you from the start. Cheers, A.ndy.

    I looked at these when they first came out and actually considered one, especially as Mrs PGB & I ride two up nearly all the time. Being brand new to market, with no real long-term ownership experiences to read about I gave it a wide berth until they'd settled down and become established. I was also, put off by the huge radiator and yes, I was also swayed by the slating it had received from some over it's lack of authenticity. But seeing them in the flesh again recently, my head was turned I must admit. Especially in the black which I preferred over the red. Mrs PGB said I could only have one if I had the red one so a conversation was had which inevitably came around to money and especially that we'd get a very poor part ex on the Classic 350. Now you've got me wanting again and the radiator? I hardly notice it now - isn't that weird? I'm 60 next year so...Naughty Mr TAYM 😊 😊😊 Taste: Mint humbug Smell: Smells of heavy depreciation Looks: BSA Goldstar Feel: Like a big Classic 350 Sound: Like it needs the baffles out (easy). Great to see Mr Cone looking after your various accoutrements TAYM

    Hi. Maybe if it was built like a 350 reborn. Metal and beautiful details it wouldnt be to bad. But for me the rear lamp is hideous, no stand or provision for one. The engine is plastic looking . I know it may ride well but to me its just a bike with a BSA badge on it. Sorry the things people say make the RE the real thing are missing from this bike and now all of a sudden it dosent matter. Have to agree with you, BSA Gold Star 650 is quite a nice machine especially at its price point. I know I would have one in my garage had they been available in the USA this year but sadly I have yet to see any mention of a dealer network for America let alone an ETA when bikes could arrive. I'm not confident we'll have these available even in 2024. I think with any new model, the manufacturer needs to strike while the iron's hot so to speak. I'm afraid by the time the BSA is available here, Royal Enfield will have a Classic 650 out and steal the BSA's thunder.

    Since this bike is not available in the US I won’t comment on the bike per we as I’ve never seen it. The genre however, a retro styled modern bike, is nothing new. I like to think of bikes like this as the logical progression of originals designs. Such as the Bonneville, it could not have survived in it’s original configuration no matter how beautiful it was (is). I do understand how some are not happy with the Gold Star moniker. That was a fairly single purpose machine not designed for easy running. I had the chance around 1980 to help with getting a Gold Star recommissioned and so got up close and personal with it and riding it was a real treat. The new version does not follow the design intent of the first, though think of it, how many people riding today outside of vintage motorcycle enthusiasts have spent any time on an original Gold Star? Yet they defend the name fiercely. We’re an interesting lot we motorcyclists! Don’t get me started on Kaw’s retro Z…..

    I haven’t seen the BSA in person to have an opinion. From your reviews I think it looks great. On the top of my bike list sits the W800. I’m a Kawasaki guy. But after the W800 I’d consider quite a few other bikes and the BSA would be in that group. Not as a Winter bike though, with the chrome. It’d totally be a way-back machine for me. It is a shame they had problems with the launch and I think it's hurt them significantly which is a shame for what is a good little bike. I don't understand the complaints about it not being authentic because if you want authentic then buy the original. It's a bike for people who want the retro look and vibe without the inconvenience of running an old bike. I haven't got to ride one yet but I will try and get a go next year. If I was going to buy one I'd have to have the legacy edition with the chrome metal mudguards and silver paint.

    It's a pity the old Goldie has such a mystique about it because any revival of it will attract criticism. That mystique makes us tend to forget the problems of kick starting on a cold winter's day; the oil leaks; the breakdowns; the dodgy brakes etc. The RE Classic/Bullet missed out on those comparisons because it had a gradual evolution. Love to try this Goldie but will have to wait a while as the relase date here in Aus isn't even on the calender yet. Liked the ride, long time since I've been on tha road.

    I must admit (with a few minor quibbles) I pretty much concur with your views. As you know I've ridden the bike twice now, and judging by the healthy viewing figures for my recent road test, interest in the bike hasn't declined at all. There are also one or two now starting to arrive on the S/H market at tempting prices. The main thing that stopped me buying one is my local dealer, but I've probably mentioned how difficult to deal with he is before. Also, you know what we bikers are like, something new comes up and we get distracted. Like the new Triumph 400, with most of the power a lot less weight and a bit less Retro. Hmmm.

    The 'look' is OK but I would prefer deeper mudguarding all round and the front guard needs extending to keep muck off the radiator. The silencer is hideous and something shaped like the Interceptor's would be better although a straight forward copy of the original Goldie silencer would be best of all. I think the price is a bit high for the ancient engine. Centre stand??

    Still prefer the look of the Interceptor but the BSA is growing on me. From the reviews I’ve watched performs similarly to the Interceptor, so I reckon I could live with one. Lack of centre stand is a negative but wouldn’t be a deal breaker.

    I have seen them. What I would say is that I had a new T120 the sprung a sump leak within a week of owning it, grew rust in random places within 2 months. I had a new £15,000 Tiger that lost all electrics within 24 hours of collecting it. Royal Enfield have had racks snap on Himalayans, yokes snap and rust issues as well as paint fall off, the Classics have had assorts of problems from clocks to dodgy paint, Interceptors have had total engine failures, break issues, electrical problems and rust issues. I could go on. These things seem to happen across the board. It’s just life in the modern mass market I think. What’s important is how manufacturers and dealers respond to it. All my personal experiences were resolved quickly with apologies and with little inconvenience to myself. It would be interesting to know how other manufacturers and dealers deal with these quality control failures. Very good comment, thank you NB 😁

    I guess you get what you pay for and the only competition for the Gold Star I can see is the CCM range, which offers a better finish and a few more ponies for an extra £2,000 plus. That said even although more aesthetically pleasing, I was disappointed to learn that the CCM's don't have impeccable handling. You'd expect a bike of that size with a bespoke frame and design to shine in more than just looks. Both lack some serious pony power for me but then that's just me, perhaps I'll mellow with age as I'm not getting any younger 😂

  • @TAYM

    @TAYM

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes the problem with the CCM is that they are nearer 4K more at their starting price at despite a few more horses don’t manage anymore torque. They are also lacking on the practical side, especially if you want to go two up. They are marvellous bikes and sound incredible but don’t really think they are competition 😁 how did the gsx go 😁

  • @greywolf9292

    @greywolf9292

    8 ай бұрын

    @@TAYM Regarding the CCM's I must have seen old pricing suggesting £9,240, they've got the look but sadly not the practicality 🤔 Sadly the dealership let itself down quite badly regarding the GSX. Heading out of town in traffic I enjoyed the note of the single Beowulf can and was getting a feel for the bike. It appeared to have a bit of get up and go with not too much throttle application. My route took me along a coastal road before heading inland on a B road in some lovely scenery. I got caught in traffic and approaching a corner the bike stuttered. Realising I was in perhaps too high a gear for my speed, I changed down but still noticing pinking at lower revs. I was held back in traffic and considered an overtake but held off untill I was sure the bike had it in it. Rounding a roundabout to head back the same road, I hoped for a clearer run and a bit of fun. The spluttering became worse, even changing down gears didn't resolve it, also the steering felt heavy and the front soft. I thought perhaps the bike had layed too long and had dirty fuel or injectors. Upon return to the dealers the salesman looked up its history, basically it only went out for an MOT every year up untill 2018. Possibly the fuel had been in the bike since then? He said the mechanic would investigate and they'd get back to me. It turns out it had a bad plug and was running on three cylinders, although it was fine when they gave it a short run when it was traded in. Four new plugs and they say it's running great now. They're offering another test ride and some Michelin Road 6's should I decide to buy it, having themselves noticed heavy steering due to tyre wear ( I suspect low pressure too ( might explain the soft front end). I'll be putting a video up after editing, I'll have to try it again just to convince myself the bike isn't as bad as I thought. I was always going to buy the one I sent you photos of anyway as it has the twin exhausts and white wheels. I'm shocked that a dealer could be so lax 😟

    @@TAYM Yes TAYM considering the bike belonged to a collector who did 200 miles p.a. for its MOT, the last of which was in 2018, the dealer's ineptitude is astounding. I myself pointed out how worn the tyres were noting they were Michelin Pilot Road 2's. I said I'd want Road 6's fitted and the black wheels powder coated white prior to purchase. They offered tyres at cost price to them, fitted free. Once I returned disgruntled, they realised the error of their ways and having fitted new plugs offered to fit Road 6's free if I bought the bike. Only for me though, any other buyer would get a cheaper alternative. It's the sort of attitude you expect from the Superbike factory, not from a main dealer who advertises every bike as " dealer serviced with parts and labour guarantee". I could've fell over when they said the fuel might have been in the bike since 2018, that in itself could cause real issues. I've bought a laptop and installed DaVinci Resolve but may resort back to my phone just to get the video out quick.

    I'm going to open a can of worms here but its only my take on matters, the thing I don't like about it is they have tried to make it look like an original Gold Star. This is the same route that Triumph took but to a higher degree, fake monobloc carb bodies that are way too big on the Triumph that just look ridiculous & engine casings that mimic the same shape as the Meriden built models. I prefer bikes with their own identity, bikes that don't desperatly cling onto previous designs in an attempt to break into the nostalgia market. This is why I prefer the Royal Enfield models & the 650 Interceptor in particular, they were designed with their own identity they've not copied old designs in an attempt to gain favour. This is just my opinion & has nothing to do with where I earn my daily crust & bowl of gruel !

    Built down to a price ? Is it ? I'm sure it's a worthy bike and will suit some people down to the ground , but I don't think that Gold Star is a good name for it . Road Rocket would be more appropriate . The Gold Star was a highly strung thoroughbred , this is a steady old plodder , [ not that there's anything wrong with a steady old plodder ]. I'm sure that 2wheledWillie would buy one , love it and keep it forever and never sell it . 🤣 But it doesn't do it for me , the overall chunkiness , seam on the tank and the brushed stainless exhaust [ with a condom style rim ! ] spoil the appearance . For just a little more money a person could have a Moto Guzzi V7 850 , with more power and better looks [ and it's not pretending to be anything other than what it is ] . It's a moot point anyway , as the Beeza isn't available in Canada . But I look forward to seeing if BSA come up with any more models . Like a Model J v-twin . 😍
