BSA 1969 mk1 Rocket 3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BSA 1969 mk1 Rocket 3 , First start up in 15yrs .. Still running on original points ignition .... work to date ; cleaned & flushed out the fuel tank - refurbed the carburettors but still using the original white plastic floats - new fork bushes - new levers & mirrors ~ Update ; I have since refitted the old original brake & clutch levers because the newer ones i fitted were made from $hit Monkey Asian pot metal & snapped clean off the bars after about 8 or 9 months of use ( Cr@p ) ~ Debugged a couple of wiring problems , plus give the whole bike a good clean and polishing of all the chrome & aluminium parts ........ Jobs to do .. Pull primary cases apart again , not only just to cure a small oil leak but inspect that primary chain clatter ? .. Plus i'll probably switch out the older type blade tensioner for the newer A65 type of shoe adjuster .. you can hear the primary chain slack and chattering noise in the video . Other than having a few simple jobs to do the bike is pretty much the same as the day i purchased it .....................The only one real head scratching moment that i had later on was with the plug thread in the center cylinder , Thread had been stripped out & repaired by the previous owner with a threaded insert that just simply unscrewed one day still firmly attached to the spark plug itself ~ stuck so tight to the plug thread it got damaged while removing it ~ .. Not Helicoil .. Not Timesert .. But a lesser known and very similar looking item made back in the 60's or 70's by a US company called KD who now trade under a new name of GearWrench part # 2129DD if it might help anyone else out with this same puzzle ? .. my problem is now solved .. These inserts are roughly 1 millimetre bigger than either Helicoil or Timesert so my only option failing to find another new KD insert would have been to pull the cylinder head off for welding & re-tapping the plug thread ,, Update ,, "Around 2017 fitted Trispark TRI 0002 & swapped out the blade type primary chain tensioner for the later A65 style shoe tensioner" .. 2020 Bike's running good and still using the old original Amal white plastic floats ..
"June 2021" .. Yup ! , Them's all still a floating 🙃

    Sounds beautiful...just like a well tuned R3 always does. I don't know about the '69 69 R3 but the '69 Trident had a 1 into 3 throttle cable system and didn't go to the gantry until '70 or '71. The 1 into 3 system was crap and a bit fiddly to set up. The worst feature was oily grit would get into it and the slicing piston would seize. Depending where the throttle position was when it seized it could cause great excitement.

    Have never owned a Rocket three or A Trident but rode many, they were fast but lacked low down grunt like the twin, the commando was to me the better bike to ride, I remember years ago going for a ride on a friends Rocket with no mufflers it sounded great especially up on song, I was the tune up king around where I grew up, could get these Pommy bikes running sweet... Pure fun, a great time to be young..

    Cheers Eddie , Sweet as these triples are !! , I still reckon you can't beat that raw grunt & feel of an A10 kitted out with a pair of Goldie silencers .. Absolutely pure music 👍 .. early 70's in the UK i went through owning an A7 + A10 + Road Rocket plus a 1959 Super Rocket - I've still got the 59 Super rocket out in the shed but sadly she's not a runner at the moment ..

    I had a BSA 1969 mk1 Rocket 3 and it was a great true 120 mph bike in stock condition. One had to adjust the valves a couple times a month to keep it running fast though. I also burned a hole in the center piston a couple of times. It was not an attractive bike, I'll give you that but I smoked a lot of bikes with my Rocket 3. Rode it very hard and fast with little mechanical trouble other than what mentioned. I hated BSA for what they did to that fine company. With decent management they could have ridden out the Japanese wave for at least several more years.

    yeah I know what your saying , I've got a T140 and a couple of triples ... twins got a more punchy lower end - while the triples don't really come alive till you get them up over 4 or 5,000rpm .. Both excellent engines in their own rights ..

    Absolutely beazas, I've always had a great love of the "British bike" certainly not because I find them better than their Japanese counterparts (there's way to much of that ridiculous Nationalism about) the Japanese build and have built some mind blowing machines, but I just enjoy the look feel and sound of a big British twin or single. May I add a rather politically incorrect (and horrifying to some I'm sure) personal opinion..........dare I say........I always found my gorgeous old Rocket 3, a bit to Japanesey.... there I've said it!! Lol.

    Witch one did you keep? The rocket was faster than the Norton but lacked the low down grunt of the twins, the triple at around 3.500 RPM were on song, they were able to blow away a 750 Honda from the lights but on a bendy road the BSA was in its element, A good Commando could give a Z900 a challenge from a standing start but on the bends the Z900 would wobble, very scary...

    @@critchley3819 The big triple went to Wales Brian, I kept my beautiful SS a while longer, but I must admit to being a Norton man if pushed. I just love the look of a pre-unit motor. But watching some folk (not this video) kicking 'em over gives me the chills, how some of 'em don't have right legs like Flamingo's I'll never know. First rule in kicking a big British machine over is "Get that foot off the kick start at the speed of light."!" Lol!

    Do Rocket Threes have an external oil filter or do they have sludge traps like other Brit Bikes of that era?

  • @beazas

    @beazas

    6 жыл бұрын

    No real sludge traps as you'd usually find inside the crank of a twin Martin , They have a replaceable type "built in" filter ... It's still recommended to remove the small grub screws from the crankshaft during a rebuild to flush out any crud build up just as you would in the old Brit twins

But sadly she's not a runner at the moment … A little known true fact about these "Triples Engines" > BSA built them all < even all the Triumph Trident T150 engines were built at the BSA factory , Even the Triumph X75 & later T160's were all born from using the BSA Rocket 3 engine cases .. But don't go telling that to all those Triumph owners - they get very upset when you remind them of the truth .. LOL 😝

    There is no need to ridicule my comment my friend, it was about your video technique only, not a comment on you. Without being Cecil B DeMille, you could take a little more care of the images you are publishing, just as a matter of respect for yourself and your public. If you look at your images objectively, I think you will end up agreeing with me and if you don't you will have missed an occasion for improvement. Enjoy your day now.
