I appreciate this video sis! By the way, the college board stopped administering SAT subject exams shortly before May. BS/MD applicants will not be required to submit these scores anymore. The focus will likely shift onto AP exams (sucks for me since I didn't take any 🥲).

I have a 1370 SAT wtih 3.8 GPA, but I'm trying to get into Howard's BS/DDS Program :( Do you think Howard University has a lower competition compared to other prestigious BS/DDS programs? Other than my stats, I have 100+ dentist volunteering hours and 2 other dental internships, but overall do you think those stats are enough for the program? Thank you!

Based on what I've seen and the people in my program whom I know, Howard's BS/MD program is just as competitive as most BS/MD programs (I can't speak much for BS/DDS because no one in my cohort was BS/DDS and I haven't done much research on that specific route, but the programs are closely related). The competition is still very high, with most accepted students having mid 1400's-high 1500's SAT scores. I was honestly an exception LOL. However, stats are definitely not the only components to whether you get in at Howard, as I know that I (with a 3.76 high school GPA and 1350 SAT score) got chosen over many students with 1500+ SAT scores. With your experiences, I think you would be a competitive applicant, but a lot of factors come into play.

Hey, I’m glad the video was helpful! Thank you! I got into Howard’s program and LECOM’s program. Although many programs have high requirements, some programs’ aren’t as high as others. Lemme see if i can find the website I used to compare bs/md program requirements. Also remember that stats are not the entirety of an application! In addition, if you haven’t already taken the SAT multiple times, consider retaking it and trying to improve your score. That way, you could possibly have more options of where to apply.

Hey! You're doing a great job. As for volunteering, look for different opportunities around you to start. It could be at a local hospital/healthcare centers, through your church/religious institution if you're religious, through your school, in your environment (cleanup, farming and whatnot), at a local food bank, etc! You can even start your own initiative if there's something you're genuinely passionate about and don't see anything being done about it. The opportunities are actually endless if you look in the right places; this world has an abundance of areas that can be improved. As for research, start off by seeing if your school as any opportunities or connections. Outside of school, there are various research programs you can apply for. For example, I know the NIH has some research opportunities for high schoolers. In addition, you can genuinely just ask any doctors you may know if they do research or know anyone who does research and may have a project you can help out with so you can gain exposure. And if you don't know any doctors personally, you can honestly cold email a bunch of people and show interest in their work. I hope this helped!

Hey Ariana! I don’t think you have to make your common app essay around medicine. The purpose of the CommonApp essay is for ALL colleges (not just bs/md programs) to see how well you write. I think it’s best to highlight your experiences outside of medicine, as you can discuss medicine in your supplementals. However, if you have a passion project that is somewhat related to medicine, that’s okay. I’m basically saying that it’s not necessary in my opinion. My CommonApp essay had NOTHING to do with medicine (the words “science,” “doctor,” and “medicine” were nowhere to be found)

Do you think a 3.75 uw is ok for bs/md and bs/do programs, because I had a family situation over the covid years which somewhat affected my grades the last half of sophomore year and my junior year.

i do think that GPA would be fine. I don't think it would hurt your chances too badly, but do be prepared to explain any dips in your academic performance if asked.

I actually had 0 shadowing, 500+ hours of volunteering, and idk how many “hours” of research off the top of my head, but I did a year’s worth of it through a program my high school had. Community service is something i’m very passionate about so i largely ran with that lol and it aligned with my school’s mission. My high school had a class called Independent Research (they also had a similar class that was for shadowing) and they taught us how to go about research and I was able to research a topic i was passionate about. Ask you counselor if your school has anything similar! I remember being so lost as a junior in high school, I wish you the best!

Also apologies for the late reply! But if your school doesn’t have a program, I’d just hunt for emails of people who maybe work in an area in science or medicine you’re interested in and let them know you’re a high schooler interested in the field. There are probably videos on youtube that go more in depth on this.

My friend’s gpa is around 4.35 weighted and 1470 sat but she moved to a new highsgcool for her sophomore year so did few ec’s, two which were related to science idk lmao how do you think the odds are?

@@ann7375 Applying for bs/md programs can be very daunting but tell her not to freak out too much! Just try your best. For supplementals i say the most important thing is to make sure to somehow align your passion with the mission of the schools she's applying to. Write a few essays about certain topics that are usually common (something about resilience, something about why medicine, something shorter about why bs/md, something about a challenge you've faced, etc) just have maybe 2-3 primary stories (people love stories. they can be about a medical related experience, family, etc) to tell and spin it to fit each school's mission. This will save a lot of time when doing supplementals for multiple schools.

@@ann7375 supplemental applications are usually asking multiple questions and are more extensive, so it may be more like short paragraphs answering multiple questions or a couple extra essays to write. really just be sure to answer the questions being asked honestly, truly show your passion for medicine, and to show you're a good fit for the school. Hey! BS/MD programs are generally applied to while in 12th grade of high school, so everything I mention in this video is to be done throughout those years. Is there something more specific you’re wondering about? The application process varies by school. Some are through CommonApp, some have separate application websites. Research each program you’re interested in

My freshmen grades sucked so bad low 80's and a bunch of C's Im afraid for my future I was in a bad high school that was careless putting in wrong grades all the time now I'm enrolled in a better school for the next 3 years and afraid how this is going to impact me

For the most part, i took a one-on-one prep course, which improved my score quite a bit. If you can afford it, I would recommend it. In addition to that, I mostly did a lot of practice questions and practice tests out of the official ACT textbook. I feel like I learned more through practice, especially since I was already pretty solid on the content. It’s important for you to take a baseline test and analyze it so you know your strengths and weaknesses, and know what your goal score is so you can work towards it.

I took both the SAT and ACT but whether it’s necessary depends on what programs you’re applying to. It’s probably not 100% needed

Im a freshman in high school and I am taking 5 AP classes this year: AP world, AP Art History, AP psychology, AP Comp Science Principals, and AP Chemistry. I’m also taking Spanish 2, La 9, and trig/pre calc. I have 97s and 100s in all of my classes but my La 9 score is a 92. I also had a very bad test score in AP chemistry (50%) and that dropped my grade down to an 80. It’s the end of the quarter and my grades are locked in. I guess my question really is what was your lowest test score and do you think I’ll still get into a BSMD program even with my bad grades?

It’s less about what school you went to but more about what opportunities you take and what opportunities you create. There’s so much more to who you are as a person and an applicant, so don’t let something you can’t control discourage you from putting in the efforts to do what your heart sets out to do. I doubt many programs look at an application and go “he/she went to xyz high school, NEXT”💀but obviously resources may come into play so if there’s something your school doesn’t offer seek the opportunities elsewhere (i.e. community programs, online resources, cold emailing, etc)

Crap I have 6 B’s and 1 C. I have taken hard classes and I’m kinda screwed 😂

Hey, it’s not the end of the world. I also had a few B’s and a C (I don’t remember exactly how many lol, high school was a while back), but many programs appreciate someone who challenges themselves, and i’m sure weighted GPA is often taken into account. If you feel you’re not as strong grades wise, balance it out by being strong in other aspects!

Don't be discouraged! How far into high school are you? If it's possible I'd recommend taking some sort of prep course for the SAT and retaking. If you can't do a course, the resources on Khan Academy for the SAT really helped me improve my score! I don't remember whether I mentioned this in the video but the minimum SAT to be invited to howard's program is 1300.
