I like them all, all of them have different styles, and if you ask them the'll tell you that's what they want, distinguished from others in their own style.

Bryan Sutton is a phenomenal guitarist, but Tony Rice OWNS this song, and nobody else will ever come close. Norman Blake wrote the song and I love the way he does it, but Tony Rice just takes it to a totally different level.

we stand on the shoulders of giants. we can't say any of the legends are "better" than any of the others. tony is not "better" than doc, bryan is not "better" than tony, but bryan is definitely leading the way as far as innovation in the modern flatpicking revolution, just as tony did in the 70s and 80s and doc did in the 50s and 60s. can't wait for the next 20 year old kid to come along and blow us all away!

@@danielcollins247...is kind of a regression in the tradition to be honest. Molly Tuttle is by far the best flatpicker of the younger generation in my opinion, although Zeb Snyder is also extremely good. Billy has a lot of flair and little substance. And we still don't really have a successor to Bryan in the line of legends.

Yes, we can say one legend is better on a certain tune. Tony might do a song and own it, but so can Brian, Doc and the rest. Tony sings this song better than anyone. Doc owns Tennessee Stud and Ray Charles own's Georgia. No one can sing it like Ray. The idea being, no one has a strangle hold on talent, but some do certain songs better than others.

I'm sure Bryan could learn to play Tony's version of Church Street Blues note for note and make it sound as effortless as anything else he plays but why rip off a genius like Tony when you're a genius too with your own style and personality?

@@RustyMadd I keep coming back to this take on the tune and although it's largely Blake's version I now think of it as Bryan's version. Damn that was a crap Christmas 2020 with Tony dying.

Not Norman Blake's version by any measure. Tony Rice's. Prefer Norman's.
