Brutally cold! Alone in the Canadian Wilderness at -40.

Extremely cold day at the tiny cabin! Did not waste anytime starting a fire, although that was not an easy task in these temperatures! Fingers went numb quick so dexterity was not there. It took a bit, but finally got a heat source going! What a warm welcome that was.

    Tip for keeping the cabin warm over night: get some rocks and put them on the stowe and some inside. They will stay warm all night.

It was a cold one and hard to work in, but experiencing that cold and trying to work in it, then feeling the heat from both the outside fire pit and wood heater in the cabin was wonderful! The heat from the cabin after I was done outside knocked me on my butt, I got really tired. Was nice and comfortable inside the cabin, and the sleep I had was one of the best I had in a while. Boy oh boy! I can't handle the cold weather like I used to! It was -31°F here in northern Minnesota this morning. Temperature has been rising all day. I guess it's about -3°F here at 3:00PM. Not sure how that compares to °C. It's still below freezing. Since I moved to Minnesota I have said "if it's below 20, it might as well be 20 below". Seeing you use the Dutch oven reminded me of cooking with one in Boy Scouts 30 some almost 40 years ago. Back when I was young and dumb and the world was so new for me. Looking back, it really was a good time. Watching you on your adventures makes me want to follow your lead! I've got my own off-grid homestead plan in the works. I'm inspired by your videos. Thanks for sharing them with us. I look forward to seeing your updates and projects. Stay safe and stay warm. See you soon!

    Sounds like we have had the same cold snap Mike! We are supposed to go up in temperature over the next few days, then back down in the deep freeze. Thanks for tuning and commenting Mike, hope you see some warmer weather soon, but sounds like you get the same weather we do here in Alberta. Take care.

    May I ask a stupid question? Why was your firewood and kindling not cut/split and staged in the cabin next to your stove prior leaving the last time you were at your cabin? You are not the only person that does not do this, i am sorry but I don't understand why this is not a common practice. If as the video stated, -40 degrees there, I would think it would have behoove you to make a fire in your cabin immediately upon arrival. Maybe it's just I don't like cold weather and want to be warm. After being deployed to the DMZ area in Korea where it gets really cold or spending 3 weeks in Russia, Dec-Jan, where it's the coldest I've ever seen, this is why I want to stay warm. This statement is NOT intended to be derogatory in nature, so, please don't take it as such. Thank you for letting me ask this question.

  • @TheBushkateer

    @TheBushkateer

    Thanks Chuck! Personally I like the challenge of starting a fire that way in the extreme cold weather. Kind of the same idea as some creators using ferro rods or another type of primitive fire starting technique to start their fires. There are easier ways of doing it, but not as challenging or entertaining to watch. Thanks for tuning in and commenting.

    Why are you building a fire outside if you need to get warm why aren't you inside building a fire get in your Kevin warm inside that would make more sense to me. I lived in Alaska for 7 and 1/2 years I know exactly what 30 below 40 below and even lower is like. I however would not be building a fire outside because it's cold I would be building a fire inside because it's cold, and I would be inside with that fire. Not trying to be mean not trying to be critical just being serious. I was here men talk about what a hard job it is to get a fire going I'm 72 years old an older lady now and have never had a hard time getting a fire going no matter where I was. In an emergency you could actually use a couple layers of heavy duty aluminum foil for a flashing, bring the heater out a little bit farther away from the wall and make a free standing thing out of aluminum foil and some tubular floors it would work until you get the things you need to do it properly. Take a couple of big soda bottles 2 l soda bottles and make hot water bottles for your sleeping bag they work perfect, I don't like you toasty warm all night. To make a little small camp stove out of a couple of soda cans and use 70% alcohol and makes an awesome little camp stove I've cooked everything from beans / rice, to stir fries, baked bread with it, and baked potatoes to anything I wanted to cook it kept me warm the whole year and a half I lived in a tent.
