great video. ultimately it does come down to a matter of taste, im a huge fan of brutalist architecture and ive never felt discomfort or alienation with it (unless its deliberately invoked in media). maybe it has to do with growing up in são paulo, which has a general brutalist vibe to it, but ive always loved the feel and look of concrete. it doesnt feel inherently oppressive to me because it makes me think of being a kid, i guess. im also biased cuz i have a whole thing with huge imposing buildings and being objectum but thats another conversation entirely, and one i think i shouldnt just reveal to a total stranger unprompted. anyways, yeah. good video. looking forward to whatever you do next

Kinda have to disagree, in my area there are a lot of brutalist buildings and i do feel like they are welcoming to people, they are huge and have room to breathe and move about. Photos or games don't capture the feeling when you are there and people around you filling the space with life. It looks oppressive with you frame it that way, but i love these spaces and i wish there were more of them. Minimalism on the other hand is too vague a description, also it would imply that people are NOT allowed to fill a minimalist space with life, since then it's not minimal anymore.

Of course. Feel free to like them, like I said in the video, I don't agree with recent movements to demolish them. However, I believe minimalist spaces have all those qualities you attributed to brutalism, the only significant difference being in aesthetics. I'm interested in reading more about what you mean by "it would imply that people are NOT allowed to fill a minimalist space with life, since then it's not minimal anymore", why wouldn't the conception of a space wich you would consider minimalist not cater to that need?

I actually quite like elements of brutalism in interiors, but exterior building design modelled after brutalism is truely indefensible. Something I think contributes to the high suicide rates in the countries within the UK (along with complimentary grey, paleteless, soul destroying weather)

Although I don't see brutalism as a cause of high s*ucide rates in the UK (my guess would be some more complex societal issues that I'm not qualified in any way to talk about). I totally agree with brutalism making some nice interiors. I've seen alot of minimalist rooms with a concrete accent wall for example that look quite nice.

@@FreddyDude Not a cause, certainly worth considering as a contributing factor (would be difficult, if not inpossible, for something so abstract to quantified). I think what made me fall in love with Brutalist interior was watching Dune and how it explored elements of brutalistic architecture in a somewhat naturally imitative way. While I wouldnt want to live in a building that looked like that on the outside (though I do think its an improvement on traditional european brutalism and seems to be inspired by both Brazilian brutalism and the bedouin culture and others from those Middle Eastern Regions), the interiors are just so beautiful in this archaic, weathered way. It feels primal, makes me think of it like a den or a burrow. Something I have wanted to incorporate in my own designs for a house I want to build myself in the future is that Islamic/Middle Eastern philosophy of the seperation of the public and private aspects of a home, I find it fascinating. I would 'build' the bedroom sapce and whatelse is directly attached (say bathroom, some storage etc) into the side of a hill/essentially underground and really try to emulated that 'cave' feeling

@@Ben-nx6pd yeah you could probably make a pretty solid argument for how your aesthetic environment directly affects your state of mind. I don't know much about other cultures take on brutalism but yeah I could see them being a bit less imposing or oppressive. The brutalist movement did come after ww2, wich was not only a big hit on europe physically, but socially and morally, i think we could see this in the emergence of existentialist philosophy wich took hold. Thanks for watching and engaging tho!!!
