I cannot thank modern technology too much for allowing me to hear and see performances of these classical compositions. Not only this, but hear many and become familiar with so many interpretations of the same music, to then be captivated by the extraordinary interpretation of the Waldstein Sonata recorded here. Having discovered Bruce Liu, I don't feel I have missed much not being able to watch the performances of Hoffman, LIszt and other greats of the past. I doubt that such experiences would be superior to watching Bruce Liu play today.

He did a lot of work in the last two years. His technique in 2021 is other-worldly. All his attention when performing now goes into interpretation which is much bolder and more polished. I've never heard a more captivating pianist. He almost got a standing ovation *before* his final performance at Chopin. Barring total failure in the final, he won the competition by the end of stage 3.

Totally. Listened again to those performances. I've been playing for almost all of my 68 years on the planet: never heard Chopin played at this "level," for want of a better word. I'm one of those listeners who marvels at the technical mastery of pianists like M.A.H. (another Canadian) and Argerich, and the early Pogorelich, and Richter, etc., but Lui takes it to another level, AND with art. You are absolutely right, btw; as good as these performances are (at the Tchaikovsky competition) he takes it to a completely different level at the Chopin competition. Obviously did some very effective practising in the interim.

Listening, again, to his Chopin (recordings from the competition), which led me to THIS page. Can he play Bach (which is so far from Chopin as to constitute a different art form)? The Book 1 C Sharp Minor Fugue is one of the most difficult of the 48 from a conceptual point of view. Well.... on first listen .... this interpretation is first rate. Ditto for the Beethoven. His technique is unsurpassed (my view), which obviously helps. If the recent Chopin competition is any guide, he's pretty much vaulted to the very pinnacle of "classical piano playing." Leap-frogged to the front ranks of the best pianists in this century. I guess time will tell. Need to hear him in more rep.

If you compare the 1st place winner to Bruce and Gadjiev, you’ll see the jurors clearly overlooked the 2 most talented pianists. I wonder if the 2 geniuses are friends?

Mmm , very lovely description Ms Wang. Will kindly you leave a time stamp for the exact moment this word picture overtook you ? Oh, I did find your broken jade necklace beads bouncing along that plate . Solution: You must tie them individually on each side of the bead to prevent that . An Attempt at humor.🤫☺🤭🙂

@asal j The scores are in at this year’s Chopin Competition. Bruce Liu won every single round, and got the most decisive 1st place finish in the history of the Competition. You can google the results. So the judges at the Tchaikovsky Competition were obviously wrong…

@@LC-ig2jm I didn’t talk for Chopin though. I dont know what makes people think that winning Chopin competition automatically makes your previous recordings and competitions superior, there is a thing called progress. He obviously has developed incredibly since Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky and he is much more confident in his program in Chopin, does not change the fact that there were better pianists in Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky, it is not the jury’s fault

I wonder why he didn’t pass. I mean I really love Gadjiev’s style but Bruce was better in this first round. Not offensive, just curious there’s some special reason. Because his style was too light & joyful - not Russian?
