It is such a shame that no prize was awarded for the best Scherzo. He would have gotten it.

Best Scherzo of the competition for me. Congratulations Bruce!

When I heard it for the first time I was like "this dude is going to play in the finals". Some comments said the same. He is the winner now. This Scherzo is perfect here.

I called it aswell, it was his competition to lose after his performance in the first round. If he executed throughout the rest of the rounds, I just knew he would win.

A real moment for him in Stage I, this was when I knew he'd win!! AND HE DID, GO BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bruce does not compete, he shares his joy and wonder with whoever will listen. Virtuoso skills beyond our imagination (until now!) bring alive every intense emotion felt and given to us by the youthful Chopin. Words fail me to express how exquisite is Bruce's realization of every tender mood, every rock-rolling abandonment, every dancing playfulness. It was such a privilege and enthralling experience to listen to all his performances, as I did on my 80th birthday yesterday. Thank you, Bruce, for your wonderful gift to me.

The harmonies in this scherzo are breath-taking. He makes every line sing.

i have to say it again it's the nicest scherzo in the first round and also in the competition! almost the best version i have ever heard!!!

Zimerman was probably even more accurate when he played this at the Chopin Competition in 1975. But Liu is even more artistic with amazing dynamic range, thoughtful coloration and perfect pedaling.

Lots of rubato,however he work up perfect piece. What a performance! Unbelievable.

Rubato is part and parcel of Chopin’s interpretation, that’s why Bruce ‘s playing and interpretation of this scherzo is marvellous 🤩 👍

For me, it was this scherzo making the winner.

I have played this piece for many years and so I know it well. This is simply miraculous piano-playing and music-making. Even in places where I might make a different choice, the beauty of what he does is irresistible. Add a stunning technique and exquisite sound and this young man is, in my opinion, the greatest pianistic talent to come along since Yuja Wang.

@William I studied this Scherzo since my conservatory days. Zimerman is my idol. But I think Liu outdid him with this scherzo. Bruce used so many nuances, dynamic range , and power, that it left me totally breathless. It’s like hearing it for the first time! Bruce is going to be a big star very soon,

I had heard the same piece of music performed by Hyunglock Choi. I could realized that how they gave somehow different emotions depending on who played it. For me, Choi's one was more touching like somewhere between joy and sad. Liu's one seems just bright, not nostalgic.

He's a wonderful pianist, but I must be jaded--I almost never get excited by newer competition winners, and Bruce is no exception. I'm not criticizing his play; I think the concert and competition stages have become artistically dessicated. I'd rather hear some newer music. I do have a very slight quibble regarding his playing, which is that his tonal palette seems a bit limited
