joop de swart actually, the Hank Williams song - titled Mansion on the Hill (1948) - is not the same song. Both songs share the same name, but that's all. This version is indeed written by Bruce.

Yes, it is a takeoff on Hank Williams' song and it is meant to be. They are a number of places on the internet where one can find people talking about their father listening to, talking about or singing Hank Williams. Obviously, Springsteen's father was one of those. My favorite singer was the recently late Ray Price. When called back for an encore, as he always was, Ray would say when I first came to Nashville a guy took me in and let me live with him. If you all don't mind, I'd like to sing you a Hank Williams song. He would then sing Mansion on the Hill. Hank Williams was the legend of all legends. Bruce does a great job with this. Watching the cars drive by from the mill. That IS where I grew up. Thanks Bruce and God rest Hank.

Oh, I came here expecting the Hank Williams masterpiece. Very disappointed.
