I also think that he actually WAS going to return as Diesel in ‘03, because they used a different but still true variation of his Diesel theme, with mostly black attire, dyed black hair and goatee, then at the last minute, McMahon said “Nahhh, we’re gonna with Kevin Nash instead”, a last minute, on the fly decision. They may have also known about the movie he was going to be eventually doing that required a haircut, so after the haircut, silver haired/bearded Diesel wasn’t going to work for Vince

I actually think Bruce is kind of right. I would rather have gotten Diesel and Razor back and Red and Yellow Hulk Hogan at first. THEN have them get their asses beat in matches against say the rock, austin, taker, whoever. And a few months in start up the NWO that way. They rushed NWO but i think fans would have prefered the older characters. Look at the pop they gave hogan for just wearing red and yellow. Or how when he posed at the end of his mania match. Or even years later when Nash came out as Diesel in the royal rumble in i wanna say 2011. We didn't need to get straight into Kevin Nash or Scott Hall. We could have gotten to that point in a new organic way. Have Diesel working with HBK and then turn on him to save Razor Ramon, two sweet in the ring. HHH runs down to save HBK and at Summerslam instead of the 1v1 we get outsiders vs DX. Hogan comes out and instead of turning on either team convinces them they should take over. Everyone knows what they're all about. Form a real on screen kliq. Not NWO not DX but the Kliq. Something like that would work rather than rehashing ideas you don't believe in.

In his defense, look at most of the characters on the roster available to work with: Adam Bomb, Doink the Clown, Duke the Dumpster Droese, the Goon, Repo Man, Tatanka, IRS, Krush. The only established characters that stood out from that early wave of New Generation were Bret, and his buddies (HBK, Razor) from a chemistry and drawn interest perspective. Luger was tagging with Bulldog in early 95, and his whole Royal Rumble/WM 10 experience made him look silly the year before. Tatanka going heel the moment it happened was hot and unexpected. But soon after, wasn't sustainable as a drawing villian. HHH came in 95 and Diesel was still there. But it wasn't the time to pair them yet as the company was working on establishing HHH with that 1995-going into 96 win streak (which eventually got snapped by Bret, and then demolished by Warrior.) By the time Austin, Mankind, Goldust, Farooq debuted, Diesel knew he was on his way out anyway. So it didn't make sense to plan a long term angle. He was a victim of lack of strong characters then.
