1982 saw Bruce Penhall seek a new contract as World Champion from Cradley Heathens. He says "I'm gonna find something else to do if the don't pay me what i want." The following meeting is Ipswich v Cradley in which Penhall rides.

Penhall is and always will be a Heathens legend. His departure left the way for Erik and Lance to emerge and the Heathens became even stronger.

£30,000 a year for the world champ. That's about 5 minutes of run of the mill premier league footballer nowadays.
Really shocked me this has I thought Bruce retired on the podium after winning his second world final. Cradley should have kept lance king he was mustard along with Phil Collins and Erik Henderson. Ommer um cradley

It,s not unusual to race under floodlights. You should know this if you are a speedway fan !
Teflon Bruce showing his true colours. Always seen as a knight in shining armour. Never liked him & this action, plus reneging on the contract he demanded by retiring on the 82 WF rostrum, tells you all you need to know about him.
SO BRUCE RIPPED CRADLEY OFF FOR 30 GRAND , AND THEN DIDNT FULFILL HIS COMMITMENT TO THE SEASON , ........SHOULD OF PUT A CLAUSE ON THAT 30 GRAND THAT HE FINISHED THE SEASON ....

Yep - he deliberately ran dead in a race to get more Americans into a world final and got the reception he deserved from the crowd. Speedway people were used to Iron Curtain riders team riding in individual championships, but when riders from the so-called greatest democracy in the world do it, speedway fans have every right to feel pissed off!
