There is something so powerful about this ending. It is not typical to have such a quiet ending. No collage of heroic shots with a voiceover. No Samuel L. Jackson popping out to talk about a team. No riding off into the sunset happily. It is hauntingly quiet. I believe in this moment, Bruce realized he was now for sure going to be alone. No one was ever going to understand him like Selina. Keaton, Gough, Burton, Welch, and Elfman bringing their A game here. Beautiful stuff.

DrewToLife amen to that my friend. Couldnt put it better myself. I miss this so much. Tim Burton could tell beautifull stories with true begginings, middles and endings. Edward Scissorhands and The nightmare before christmass are another two vlassic examples. I wish somebody could do that today like that. Maybe Guillermo Del Toro - his movies have that flavor of great dark fairytales. Loved Pan's labyrinth. Also - whatch - a monster calls. Brilliant and dark but so realistic and heartbreaking. About a child whos getting bullied and coping with his mother's illness. And then a monster comes to visit him and theach him domething important...So sad but do beautifull.

I missed Returns in the theater but saw Batman Forever, I liked it at the time, it was actually pretty good I thought, action packed, entertaining and funny. B&R was the lame one that was pure garbage. Tim Burton still worked on the production of Forever which is probably why it was still halfway decent.

Batman Returns was one of my most memorable times ever going to see a movie. I remember the anticipation before the pain and disappointment that was Batman Forever. It would have kept the series alive to leave Keaton and Burton do what they did best. We likely would have seen a full six movies instead of a pair of awesome movies followed by a pair of senseless corporate cash grabs brought to us by the idiots at Warner Bros. Changing the Tim Burton theme was a fatal business mistake. We are really lucky as Batman fans that Christopher Nolan came in when he did. Another Batman movie like Forever + Robin would have completely wrecked the franchise beyond repair.

Nastassia; similar view. Imo “Batman Begins” kind of fits w/ the Burton movies. There is still a Batcave & there was a chance the mansion could be rebuilt. TDK is a good movie but not really about Batman. It has some guy in a bat costume living in an office building. And Ledger’s Joker while brilliant was more supernatural like “The Crow”. TDKR with Bruce’s broken back, getting out of the pit & the flaming bat on the bridge was BS. Nolan is a great director. He can take cr@p like TDKR & get most people to like it.

Sure I personally find TDK series to be the best, but this had that irrevocable nostalgic New York essence to it. It's ephemerally 80s, many lines are clever, the Penguin was an interesting villain, and Selena is the OG femme fatale, the first that I ever knew of.

I always thought Michelle Pheiffer was the catwoman. The only one. And only now am I able to appreciate the depth of her performance in capturing the nuances in and range of emotions and the darkness of catwoman. She was truly complicated and a tormented soul. Plus she was absolutely stunningly gorgeous. Shame Selena and Bruce couldn't be together.

Burton went waaaaay off the reservation here and needed tone shut down. It wasn't just the cliche "Happy Meals" issue. The box office returns were down. And the film was just unnecessarily macabre and in a few spots, mean spirited and nasty. It was the right decision to turf Burton, setting on the path to the remake hell he lives in now. Burton was not necessary for a successful Batman film. Where WB misfired was veering so far in the opposite direction with Schumacher. Although they had to be happy considering Batman Forever brought in the biggest box office. They then repeated the Burton mistake of giving Shumacher free rein, leading to the rancid filth that was Batnan & Robin.

Something dark happened to both of them, Bruce’s parents shot, Selena’s boss pushed her out of the window. Supposedly Warner wanted Sarah Michelle Gellar to play a younger Catwoman instead of a feature film with Michelle. Burton didn't agree to their demands and the movie was never made. Then, they butchered Catwoman in the Hale Berry's abomination 10 years later. Go figure.

0:53 Reminds me of a stray black cat I took in back in janurary 2012. It was snowing outside but the poor thing was under-fed, underweight and wasn't neutered. He spent most times out on my balcony with the food I gave him and the homemade kennel, but when it was cold he would come in. He was quite scared to the point of aggressive but I still loved him. Eventually he settled in and became part of my home. Sadly he passed away in 2020 due to multiple tumors on his mouth. Every cat (hell every animal) needs a warm and loving home regardless of who they are. RIP Salem. 😿

As much I wanted them to end up together, I feel that this ending still fits into the Batman lore. Bruce and Selina have always had polar moral views they kept them divided despite the chemistry they share. Whether or not they ended up together has varied in the comics, but this movie shares in that tradition of their cycling distant romance.
