Bruce Grobbelaar - Liverpool Football Club 1981-1994

Спорт

The original eccentric genius between the sticks, Bruce Grobbelaar will be best remembered for the wobbly-legged penalty heroics which brought Liverpool the 1984 European Cup
Other than the European triumph in Rome, there is just the small matter of his other 626 run-outs for the Reds in a glittering 14-year career in which he established himself as one of the Reds' greatest ever custodians and also returned six First Division titles, three FA cups and three League cups.

I knew of Bruce when I lived in Bulawayo. Played football against him when he played for Old Miltonians, they had a super side. I played for Bulawayo Callies. I never imagined he would play for Liverpool - I supported from age 7 and throughout my life - I was born in Huyton Liverpool and I don't think lfc fans quite understand the trials that Bruce went through before he joined Liverpool. It is a great tribute to a man - Bruce Grobbelaar. Pamwe Chete my friend.

The balls these days are so drastically different from what they were back then, there's no logical comparison to be made, apart from both variations being round. All the 'keepers back then would catch the ball a lot more, as the flight of the 10-pound chunks of leather they were kicking about back then was a lot easier to anticipate than today's miniature beach balls.

I've praised all modern greats like Casillas , Reina of Columbia, Navas etc but none of them can be this critical One touch Policy is rare today u find mediocre strikers making waves bcoz of Lazy GKs. Bruce was just an angel send to play in goal now I understand why they call them Dream Team , my brother told me those guys where heavenly , they could beat Brazil and I laughed now I take it all back. The keepers you see batting the ball away today are some of the best keepers of all time. Because they know if they attempt to catch a modern ball hit by a striker theres a good chance these modern balls will move just before he attempts to catch it and the keeper will fumble it in the 6 yard box. Very dangerous.

@@spangyull9110 great point about the modern footballs affecting this. However there are instances where they do punch a ball when the catch was an easier option. A mistimed punch/flick can also prove equally as costly. Alisson is a great example of a keeper in the modern game who will catch it when it's safe to do so.

#1 nutter and a great (under appreciated) keeper. Didn't play passive. Came for the ball - CAUGHT the ball. I saw him often when he played in Vancouver with the Whitecaps of the old NASL (with seasoned 'Brits' ; Ball / Whymark / Craven / Hector / Harvey / Parkes (ya know). Don't think he got the deserved acclaim, likely because he was always seen by the opinion makers as the disruptive guest at high tea.

Loved the Bushman...but never forget the mistakes in early times...was very sad to see and read the match fixing stuff...put permanent question mark on his career...but on sheer ability ..never seen anyone as agile and his throw outs were fantastic to get the full backs motoring....had impossible job filling Clems shirt...but had a very successful career under too many managers not to be a world class keeper

What a goalkeeper. He and Arconada from Spain are two who got far less credit that they truly deserved. Just compare them with the modern day keepers who not only do not catch the ball but use their legs and feet to push the ball away. The two mentioned were my teenage heroes.

Indeed Bruce Grobbelaar, the Zim Jungleman was a brilliant shotstopper who enjoyed a glorious 13 year career @ Anfield winning everything Football had to offer. His only weakness was cutting out crosses as evidenced by the 1988 FA Cup final Lawrie Sanchez headed goal & the Kalusha Bwalya headed goal against Zambia in 1993 @NSS which ensured Zambia equalised against Zim & qualified for the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations @ the expense of Zim Warriors. All hail, hail ,hail the Zim Jungleman& the Clown Prince of English Football !.

Everyone saying 'Keepers today don't catch the ball' - there's a reason for that. The ball was heavier then and didn't move nearly so much in the air. Players today also practice hitting the ball with little or no spin to make it move that much more. I played in the 80s/90s and am on the training ground today, and there's just no comparison to how much the ball moves. Bruce was brilliant, but the comparison isn't fair.
