Steve Nicol - Liverpool Football Club 1981-1994
Спорт
Steve Nicol is one of the best defenders to have ever played for the club and his versatility made him invaluable. Indeed the the £300,000 Bob Paisley paid Ayr United to bring him to Anfield in October 1981 proved one of the bargain deals of all time.
Nicol played for five Liverpool managers and made 468 appearances, scoring 46 goals. Overall he won four League titles and three FA Cup winners medals before becoming a player coach at Notts County in 1995.

Wow. Incredible 2 footed finishes. Would never have imagined he was so good watching him on ESPN. Go Stevie!
2:52 Jesus Christ look at the state of that pitch. And yes, I too am here because of ESPN FC. The man could play and scored some very nice goals over a lengthy and very successful career with the Reds. Now I know why he has such a deep connection when he speaks of the club on the show as he was more than just a player but a stalwart for LFC during the 80s and early 90s. Kudos to him.
Bloody hell hat-trick scoring defender

There amount of Man U fans who insist Gary Neville was better than him, half of them are gen zeros who’ve never seen either play and most have never even heard of Nicol. Feel like punching them every time
Over 468 games for Liverpool this guy has to be first 11 of LFC greatest players!
Can you imagine the price for a modern day Steve Nichol , a great defender who scored like a forward

100+ million.. as a player he's kinda similar to Joško Gvardiol who just got sold to City for 100 million, except he was more a threat going forward than Gvardiol currently is.

The way he finished..world class especially for a defender.. the volleys, the flick's over the keep, the One touch finishes incredible
For a defender, he was in the opposition box quite a lot.

I’m here because of ESPN. Now anytime I hear him talk I won’t be too hard. Absolute Legend. Hats 🧢 off
Here because of ESPN. What an intelligent player. Those chips and anticipation around the box! Brilliant Stevie! LFC legend!

@@CatIsMad Indeed. Back then you had to be primarily a good defender as a full back. He defended very well too. Nowadays you may be pacey, have some stamina and you’re good to go for a top tier club.
The goal at 3:10 would be GOTY even today, and he was a DEFENDER. Legend!
My favourite liverpool player of all time
Beautiful to watch Barnes gliding up the left, effortlessly ghosting by challenges, before hitting leisurely crosses for players to run onto. He just had such confidence that any player in that Liverpool team would be able to score - and when you had players like Nicol he wasn't wrong.
what a legend, listen to the bloke thrice a week now and he's a riot. good on ya stevie
Respect. Brilliant.
Wow, ESPN then I said to myself let go search this guy can do well, I’m speechless
Red legend. Great defender and . ..great goleador ! Many excellent and important goals for Steve: thanks. YNWA
You can feel the weight of the ball when it lands still just by watching. Its like a medicine ball
He was a super striker, for a defenser
jesus what a legend
wow never expected nicol to be a clean finisher and for a Right back goodness xD
For those asking about his defending, the clue is in the name Mersey Goals. A superb defender on either side who played all over the pitch for the reds. Superb reader of the game and watched him win the lot with us.
I respect Steve Nicole-Solid player. He was Better than more than 3/4 of the entire premier league players 2021/2022.
Espn fc has a legend as a Pundit. I know now.
Fantastic player , true legend.
To see a Defender goals like this is awesome. If you compare how he scored goals by heading and chipping the ball over the goalie to today’s players, you need to question what they are practicing in the training sessions. They can’t head a ball, the can’t hit a ball volley, and they don’t chip the ball over the goalie. The sad thing is that you see this behavior in all leagues on the globe. The only explanation is, someone must teach this to young managers this crap on the academy’s.
defender hit a hatrick ... legend
Virgil Van dijk our number 4 carrying his legacy......Robertson and mane are just like nicol and Barnes on the left hand side
As a United fan... I'll admit Nicol has my respect as a Liverpool legend but as a pundit he sucks I hate his punditry but now I understand and can appreciate his love and passion for Liverpool especially in the end of the last decade.

Wonder how long it will take him to get in shape and form we could use him upfront atm

who would have thought the chubby commentator for espn that always talks nonsense is this good in foorball during his prime time? 🥶icy finishes🥶

Shocking to see how much space players were given 30-40 years ago. This is League 2 caliber.

1) Teams didn't play 11 men behind the ball like many of them do today - that's a major reason. If a lower division team came to play a top team in the FA cup in those days for example you might see it but you wouldn't see teams in the top division with 11 players in their own half of the field like you do today. Even the good teams do it today when they don't have the ball. When you play in half of the field, then you have half the space. It doesn't make the game any better and generally speaking the same # of goals are scored in games today as there were back then. 2) In today's game you see large numbers of players all close to the ball because of things like the 'pressing' game which is more of a modern phenomenon in the game. In many ways it reminds me of how we played the game in the schoolyard as kids when everyone mindlessly followed the ball around and didn't keep their positions because we all wanted to get a kick of the ball. It's all relative. These players were on a way different level to League 2 players.
surprising and great to see how much touch Stevie had in and around the box. But two things: 1) anyone make a video of his complete game? he was a defender...and given how much he and his old(ish) heads talk about how bad defending is in the "modern game" you'd think that would be most of this highlight. or at least ANY of it? 🤨😑 and speaking of defending.... 2) plenty of "shockers" in this highlight. He's running free in the box in most of these. Free headers galore. Optional defending everywhere. I'm not surprised. From the NBA gasbags all over media to their counterparts in soccer, there's a whole lot of chest thumping about shttt that never was. the eye in the sky don't lie.
Just had to watch this sunday league nonsense for all the crap he talks on ESPN
