In Korea, we call it Honey Bread and it’s often served with whipped cream or ice cream (great minds!) on top and syrup. So satisfying to have it with a cup of black americano. 🤤

I’m in the middle of making my loaf at the moment. I proofed it overnight in the fridge and now it’s shaped and having its final proof before baking. I’ve done a variation, one of third rolls I covered in a layer of cinnamon, sugar with a little bit of softened unsalted butter before folding and rolling. My son saw the clip advertised on KZread and asked me to make it for him. We lived in Hong Kong where there are a lot of Japanese style bakeries and milk bread was his favourite thing.

I was thinking about ice cream sandwiches, but since you mentioned them at the end, I’ll suggest using this bread for a ham and cheese sandwich or a patty melt (which is a cheeseburger on grilled bread for those who aren’t familiar). Excellent video, Jemma!!! Your fried doughnut video from years ago is currently at the top of my cooking To Do list!!!

@@MommyOfZoeAndLiam It's kind of like saying "drinking black coffee will put hair on your chest.." or "make the bottom of your feet turn black".. or "so good it'll make your toes curl.."...it's just a saying.. 😜

@@Mike-mn8wy well I’ve never heard of coffee doing the first 2. “Put hair on your chest” usually alludes to making a boy “manly” by doing something adult men do, and “So good your toes curl” alludes to a physical reaction of pleasure. Most sayings make some sort of sense. Bread crust giving you curly hair just doesn’t make sense to me.

@@MommyOfZoeAndLiam Maybe this will help you then...🙄 "The myth that eating bread crusts can make hair curly likely originated in Europe at least 300 years ago. At the time, starvation was a real possibility and people could lose their hair when they were sick. However, healthy people were more likely to have enough food, including bread, and it was widely believed that healthy people had curly hair. The crust of wheat bread is the most nutritious part of the bread, so eating it with the crust intact was important during times of scarcity." Again, it's just a "saying"..

I went to Arome bakery earlier this month and this was one of the best things I've eaten. I brought a loaf of shokupan from Chinatown then brought it back home to recreate however I don't think the slices were thick enough to have the same effect. Thank you for sharing these recipes I'm definitely going to try and make this myself! The extra crunchy failure was eaten with ice cream and not wasted.

So, I'm the one who said I use milk bread for their rolls. WHAT if you used the honey butter as the roll filling.....then you could make a creme anglaise for dipping as opposed to a frosting or icing for them?? Boom! You'd have your ice cream sandwich anyone regardless of teeth sensitivity could enjoy. I wonder if that could work?? 🤔

Just in the spirit of scientific inquiry... hypothetically, if anyone wondered if, faced with a snack emergency, you could do this with a piece of whole wheat supermarket sandwich bread, I can confirm it does not explode or anything and is quite delicious. I imagine the thicker bread isn't just for the fluffiness, I'm sure it balances out the intense sweetness better.

Easy recipe? Put butter on 1 side of your bread of choice, sprinkle with white or brown sugar, put in oven on Broil until golden brown. OR butter 1 side of bread, put in oven on Broil until golden brown, add honey to the top & eat. Both are delicious n super easy. I thought that's what this vid was gonna be when I first read the title 😊

Those were a bit disappointing. Bread was fine, but when I made the toast, the outer coating was only crunchy around the crust. While it passed what Chef John calls the "fork test," the white bread part was more chewy than crisp on the outside, if that makes sense. Not sure how to trouble shoot that. I tried a second round, spreading the paste more thinly, but didn't really change anything. UPDATE: Ha! What do I know? I took them to work and everybody told me "Save that recipe." One woman came to me in tears to thank me for making them, saying it reminded her of her childhood. So there you go. I stand corrected.

This is delicious. However, I was expecting to it to come out of the oven crispy...noooo..... I baked and baked it about double the time until it was vaguely crispy. Then I realised that it goes crispy when it cools. The coating is essentially a caramel that hardens as it cools. It's best eaten cold.
