Brora - small town on the NC 500
As we travel the NC500, we found one of our favorite small towns. Brora is a charming village nestled on the east coast of Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands . With a population of around 1,200, it offers a peaceful escape amidst a stunning natural landscape.
Brora boasts a rich history and was once a bustling industrial center. The village’s long industrial past is evident in the remains of coal mines, salt pans, a harbor, and a distillery. The white sandstone in the Clynelish quarry, located near Brora, was even used in the construction of famous landmarks like London Bridge, Liverpool Cathedral, and Dunrobin Castle.
Today, Brora is a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and historical sites. Here are some of the things you can see and do in Brora:
Explore the beautiful beaches: Brora boasts a gorgeous beach with golden sand, perfect for walks, picnics, and wildlife watching. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, minke whales, and seals that frequent the coastline.
Play a round of golf: Brora is a golfer’s paradise, situated amidst some of Scotland’s most renowned golf courses. The village itself has a picturesque golf course offering stunning views.
Visit the Clynelish Distillery: Brora is home to the famous Clynelish Distillery, one of the most prestigious distilleries in Scotland. Take a tour of the distillery and learn about the whisky-making process, or sample some of their award-winning single malts.

So many of the villages were burned down during the Highland clearances. It was great to be in a historic home on an old farm.
