    An excellent overview. I've just acquired a Cannondale Synapse road bike that has been modified with a straight handlebar to make it slightly 'hybrid' for a more comfortable riding position. The Brooks saddle was intended to be a gift to myself and a show of commitment to getting out more. Your wise words have now convinced me that it is the right thing. Many thanks. Dave in Yorkshire, England.

    I had a B17 on my touring bike when I was in my late teens and early 20's. I'm soon 65 and just bought my second B17. I have it on my retro hybrid bike - it was comfortable from the first moment (do follow the instructions on break-in). It looks the business and feels great. And when you think that it's for life (if you're smart enough to transfer it to your newer bikes) then it's a bargain. A more expensive quality long-lived product will save you money in the end. All the best from Switzerland, Rob

    @@gustavochiozza6465 Apply the supplied leather treatment to both sides, wait 24 hours for it to soak in and not leave a greasy surface. Done! The saddle is already surprisingly comfortable despite its appearance to the contrary. And it jusz keeps getting better. Many people transfer their existing Brooks saddle to a new bike to keep enjoying the comfort.

    Put mine on today and expected the break-in to be a painful but necessary evil. I was amazed at how comfortable it was and rode 62 miles before I called it good. The nice thing is.....I know it's only going to get better! WOOT WOOT! Love the sweet 17.

    In 1973 I had a Mercier with a Brooks saddle. I recall it as the most comfortable bicycle I ever rode. One night someone stole the bicycle from my apartment. I was sad to lose the bike but what I kept saying to myself was: "if only they had left the saddle!" Since then I haven't had a Brooks saddle and riding simply hasn't been as much fun. But now I'm seeing the light and am about to order a B17! I'm Just hopin it will be as good as I remember. Thanks for the great review!

    So, I've been riding on my Brooks daily for about 2 1/2 weeks now, gotta say that it really is the most comfortable saddle I've had. I'm coming off of 25 m rides with only a slight feeling of pressure on my sit bones as opposed to the tingly numbness and soreness through my whole butt that I've had on other saddles. Like you, the comfort was immediate. So far I haven't noticed much of a break in, but I'm sure it's happening, and anyhow it's perfectly fine now. Thanks again for the review.

    I've known of the Brooks saddle reputation for many years now. Your review is very objective and helpful. I knew the saddle would slowly conform to you (as I saw many of them in Antigua Guatemala streets in the 80's) but everytime I check one in the store it feels hard. I don't ride more than a few hundred miles a month commuting and over the weekends but with your review I'm thinking seriously about getting my first Brooks. We'll see. Thank you

    +arturothecook - Another option to consider is a B17 "Aged" saddle. I don't recall the details, but they're somehow softened a bit and "pre-broken-in." Look into that and see what you think. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

    The Brooks saddle is pretty comfortable even before it's broken in. I think that is because it is so shiny that it allows your rear-end to slip imperceptibly without any form of resistance or gripping. It actually, felt a bit odd the first time I sat on one, but after a few minutes it felt great (once I got the tilt-level right)

    On a cycling forum a few years back a bicycle manufacturer wanted input from commuters. Wanted to design a commuter for different distance, terrain, weather, etc. When they posted their final design. It was essentially a Raleigh IGH w/rear rack, 26x1.50 tires, rechargeable lights fore and aft, upright seating and cable disc brakes. With a coffee cup holder option. lol The IGH hub was either a 3 or 8 speed depending on terrain. Oh, and the saddle choices? Brooks B17, B17S, B66 or B72. Brooks pretty much nailed it over 100 years ago.

    On my second B17 (first stolen in NYC) don,t recall breaking them in, they were/are great from day one and get better with time. I ride a tourer but my friends ride road bikes, yet to convince them that the comfort will actually add to their performance. Here in the UK most tourers ride on Brookes; comfortable and adds class to your bike. Ok that's my comment now off to get ready to watch the TdF Grande Depart in Yorkshire this weekend. stay safe!

    Completely agree. It seems like they should be hard and uncomfortable, but they give just enough to be comfortable. I replaced my gel saddle with a B17 and never regretted it. Even before breaking in, it was better than anything I'd ever ridden. I then bought a B72 for my commuter and it's perfect. I seriously doubt I'll ever ride anything else.

    2.20: It's by no means ugly :-) I love that well worn out look. It shows how much it means to the owner. We in India grew up with Brooks copies in the 70s and 80s. Most of them are still in service. Even they were much better than what we have today in the form of gel saddles. Thankfully Brooks is now legally available here.

No pain, no big breaking in period for me, although I know it will improve as time goes. Like wine it will get much better with age. Well worth the hundred dollars i paid for it.I love it.

    Great review and excellent points you make. The Brooks saddle is very misunderstood... the initial impression many people have is that it'll be uncomfortable because it has no padding yet they don't understand the concept behind it's "leather hammock" design. After trying many of the latest and greatest saddles for more than 30 years, I've found that there's no other saddle as comfortable for long mile rides nor as reliable with a decades long life-span as what Brooks offers.

    Can't agree more about how good the B17 Brooks saddle is. I have owned a B17 for just under 2 years - 5000km of commute on it. Saddle sores are in the past. There will be no other saddle brand for me. When I switch bikes, the saddle comes along. Price is what's holding me back on putting Brooks on all my bikes. But who needs more saddles when with proper care, the B17 lasts 40 years. So thanks for the video. And thank you Brooks England for a great product.

    Best B17 review I have seen. Well done. Like you, I found my B17 comfortable right out of the box, but I am 220 lbs. I'm thinking you are correct and my heavier weight helped. However, I did switch to a Brooks C17 Cambium with cut-out due to some middle-aged male issues. So far, it is great but I haven't used it that long. Really regret giving up my B17, but I was getting numbness on some long rides and that is not good. I don't fault the saddle though. It's just me. Ty

    I have two B17s one on my everyday, do everything rig and one on my 1966 Moulton F frame. I have tried the Velo Orange version on the B17 and despite riding for a good 500miles the Velo would not yield. Changing the Velo over to the B17 and immediate effect was a compliant and comfortable ride. After only 100 miles the new Brooks was perfect for my behind. I am about to swap the saddle off my folder for another B17.

    Thanks, Jack! I still choose the Proofide. I paid $15 for a 40g can. Sure, that's a lot from a gram/dollar perspective. But, since it's only applied twice a year, the can should last me two years if I don't lose it first. We bike owners tend to spend more than $15 on less important things. ;-)

    I used a brooks professional on my fixed gear for 2 years, riding quite often (at least once a day commuting, long rides pretty often) and it still hurts my butt a lot... For some reason I decided to buy a B17 for my new road bike...and man. After 1.5 months it's already very comfortable as a saddle. I'm not saying the B17 is more comfortable for everyone than the Pro, I'm saying everyone's sit bones are different. If you can try out the brooks line before buying, I'd advise it.

    My tip. When applying Proofide use a hair dryer. Put a little bit of Proofide on the saddle then use the hair dryer to melt it. Now it can be so easily spread over the saddle and it goes into the saddle. Before you put the saddle on the bicycle for the first time you can put Proofide on the underside of the saddle. With the hair dryer you'll find this is very easy and you can put quite a lot into the saddle on the underside. This will give a bit of protection from water spraying up into the saddle.

    Hello Jorge CC. I have 3 bikes all fitted with a brooks saddle, a road bike fitted,Brooks Professional saddle this one has outlived 3 different bikes age of saddle 28 years ( been riding many years). a brooks B17 flyer[springs] fitted to my Guvnor bike very comfortable, don't care about the weight comfort is more important. Also have a Titanium railed B17 that is fitted to my cyclo cross commuting bike. Extremely comfortable & light. Mr Stealth is quite right good ,I feel honest review.

Living in Yorkshire it was also important for me that these are still made in the UK - what could be better?!

    As somebody who rides in all weather, the not getting it wet part would be a huge inconvenience, so I just ordered a C17. Also, while I love the classic look of the Brooks, it's in complete opposition with a carbon road bike.

    You can buy it from pretty much any shoe shop. It is like proofide but thicker. I was told by old timers that you coated the underside before use. Heat it up a bit and melt it into the nose of the saddle and under the back support. This smells.. Let it dry and then do it again. I only did this twice and rode it in snow and rain for all those years. the only reason I have a new one is that the leather has now stretched to the point where I have no more adjustment on the screw at the front

    Thanks for this great review! I just bought a fine retro-style bycicle today and will get it in about 6-8 weeks, even tough the brown leather saddle on it looks good i have no idea yet if it will fit to my behind or not :-/ I will also buy the brooks leather handles and if the original saddle troubles me i considered the B17 or even the B66, anyway, after watching i´m sure i´m not wrong if i go for the B17! The only thing that could bother i heard is that the black one sometimes rubs off especially on light trousers so i will definitly go for brown or honey colour... Kind regards and thank you again for the video! :-)

    Mainswitch55 - Thanks for sharing! I think the Brooks saddles really finish-off a good retro look, especially if the bike can pull off the natural or honey color. Regarding bleeding, I suspect any color other than natural can bleed or, at least, has the same potential to bleed as black. Thankfully, I only wear black shorts and have never had a problem. :-)

    Phenomenal video; thank you very much for sharing! I am shopping for a saddle, and I am convinced that Brooks is the brand for me. However, I am not too sure on the exact model. I know I want a B17, but I am not too sure on whether I should go for the Standard, Special, Imperial Wide, or Imperial Narrow. I am a male and my main concern is perineal protection. Have you had experience with these other models? If so, I would very much appreciate hearing your thoughts about them. Thank you again!

    Hi, great review. Made me sure to be wanting to buy mine almost 5 years ago. The only thing I don't like about it is that it leaves black marks on my pants... That's a problem resolved since a while, as I've put a waterproof protective sleeve onto it, bought for 6 euro from decathlon. It also protects the saddle from the rain. I was wondering, are you still riding on the one you've reviewed in this video?

    There's a third camp: Those (like myself) who own several Brooks saddles but prefer one over the others. The B-17 is a fantastic saddle, but for me the B-15 "Swallow" is the only one that is comfy out of the box. Each saddle in the Brooks leather range is made from different grades of leather. It isn't just the shape of the saddle that will inform a person to purchase one, it's also the leather grade. For you, the B-17 obviously hit the shape/grade sweet spot. For me, it's the Swallow.

    what about that this saddles doesnt have space in your perineal zone? i dont think that area would get softer through time, and i saw brooks sell one with that zone cutted off, but i dont know if them would last as long as the normal ones, do you know something about this? or do you feel the saddle put pressure there?

  • @CaptainOverpackerRides

    @CaptainOverpackerRides

    +metalg33ksolid - It's possible to adjust the saddle's nose-up/down positioning to minimize the pressure. But it's a very fine adjustment. I haven't tried a Brooks with the cutout. I consider it, but I haven't been having any numbness issues.

    We have three B17's and a B67. I've had at least another four Brooks saddles. It's all we use. Question about weight. My weight goes up and down a couple of pounds each week or perhaps each day of few hours. My bikes range from lightish to downright heavy. Is there any difference in my weight going up a bit vs having an extra few ounces in saddle weight? I've never understood why it always gets mentioned. Are all bike riders in the Tour de France? My bikes are for getting around town, not racing.

  • @CaptainOverpackerRides

    @CaptainOverpackerRides

    +Robert Ennor - The weight of a saddle almost never comes up when riding with casual riders or touring riders. However, I'm still fast enough to ride with "sport riders" (not racers, though). A lot of them still get a thrill out of lifting a bike to show off how light it is. The extra few ounces of saddle weight is a real turn-off to them; they still haven't figured out that that weight is irrelevant at our riding levels. ;-) Thanks for visiting! -Scott

    I don't own a car, & I ride at least 4000 miles per year on my bicycle just around town commuting. Some days its 70 mile trips, but often just 10-20 for a daily commute/errands. Although it is pricey, & that it is really just a leather hammock you sit on, I wouldn't go with another seat. I'm heathy & athletic & my perineum is never in pain. This saddle helped me align my sit bones & sacral alignment for miles of ease.
