I have one and she’s around a year old. She was supposedly hand raised - but she was very shy. I wouldn’t give her a 4/5 for handability still. We’ve made progress and she can enjoy scritches... and she will step up 75% of the time when asked. But if she’s not in the mood for something she will bob her head then lunge and nip/bite. Her bites are very strong. My hopes were to be able to harness train her and be able to take her around with me... but that seems highly unlikely at this point. :/ She is definitely very quiet as parrots go and really just wants to coexist in my space. :) She doesn’t have any pronounced personality yet- but it may change as she goes through puberty from what I’ve heard.

@@deborahlevy4376 She could be moody for sure. I would suggest trying to reward her when she does step up. Give her a treat or something, so to her, stepping up isn't something to be annoyed at but something to look forward to. But overall, Pionus aren't petty or scritchy birds. Moreso sits on your shoulder all day.

@@deborahlevy4376 Pionus are different than other parrots, if you understand them they will be much more interactive with you. You've got to read "The Practical Pionus" by Russ Shade, he explains all about them from his years of experience in their native Ecuador and raising many of them. The book should be available from him directly at www.the-practical-pionus.com/

I also feel that your set was not visually distracting at all. Your editing is good and that coupled with your subject matter. My eyes and mind was firmly engrossed to the content. Thank you again for your helpful insights. This is important for me to make the correct choice. After all if I get a Parrot. The Parrot will outlive me by a few years. Im 50 yrs old now... Maybe we might end up being old coots together... Who knows!?! 😀✌

As soon as I can get a bird, I'm getting a pionus. I've been drawn to them like a magnet the instant I started looking into birds. They just have the perfect personality for me and they look almost like a painting, a dark base with splashes of so many different colors. I don't get why they aren't more popular. I think they're beautiful.

I love Pionus! :D They are such lovely birds and if I felt like I had the proper amount of time to devote to one (and a bigger place), I would love to consider having one. The bronze wing in particular is the most gorgeous, but I also really like the Dusky pionus. Right now I have 4 Bourke's parrots and they are perfect for me, given my work schedule, small apartment and that I'm the only one in the house. They are such gentle birds with sweet voices, so independent but absolutely curious and loving in their own ways even though they don't like being touched or don't like to step up! I give them to fly and explore after I get home from work every day so they are very happy with the way things are. I'm afraid I wouldn't have the time to devote to a pionus, but maybe someday. :)

Unfortunately I lost the ability to scratch, pet and handle Raku because he was sick with aspergillosis which is a deadly disease. My husband was able to treat him for almost a year with antibiotics and anti fungal medication giving him doses twice a day. Raku was not at all thrilled with the treatments but he LIVED. Now he is no longer the cuddly sweetheart he was. He prefers to spend his time with my 30 year old Senegal. I miss the cuddles and scratches but I am great full we were able to save his life. 7:42

Our Bronze Wing Pionus has gotten more and more awesome over time as we've learned how to motivate and train him and as he's learned to trust us :) He's gotten super sweet and loves lots of cuddles 🥰 For a while he became a one person bird, but through other people spending more time around him, giving him treats and doing training with him he's getting better with other people in our family! He models quite a bit after our slightly older parrot, a Yellow Naped Amazon. It probably makes him a little louder than a lot of Pionus, but he's also a good talker and learned most of his first words from our Zon :) He loves to play around on and with toys, etc, like our Zon. Both of them especially love hanging from toys and pretending to fight them 😂 Our Zon can be harder to have around while we're doing certain things than our BW. Our Zon often just HAS to get into what we're doing or won't leave us alone so we can work on things. Also he can get into trouble so fast and knows how to sneak! So we have to watch him pretty closely when he's out. We can have our BW with us more easily a lot more of the time because he's not as rambunctious and doesn't tend to get into things around the room. (Our birds are flighted. ) Also, our BW just gets more and more beautiful! He's 2 years old now.

I have a Bronze Winged Pionus here in Ireland. I agree, incredibly rare bird to get, but a superb pet. I disagree however about the size, they are in no way near the size of an African Grey, maybe slightly smaller than a Timneh Grey. I'd love to get another Pionus but alas difficult to find. I paid €700 for mine, so way cheaper than what you guys in the USA pay. Good video, thanks for sharing. John

I kinda lump African Grey as the "larger" of medium sized parrots and Pionus is like, "medium large" of medium parrots. And yeah, Tinnehs are a bit smaller, but overall in that realm of size I feel. Grats on finding a BW in Ireland. I can imagine it's almost impossible!

What do you think about the bronze wings attitude in relating himself with other pet birds? Can Pionus be aggressive? I’m looking forward for pionus in my family… however I afraid about climates changes.. My place gets cold as low as 3 deg in winters and hot as high as 45 deg in summers… Is it safe for pionus to live in these places .???

I wanted a pionus parrot but husband talked me into 2 blue crown conures. I think I made a mistake. Thinking of taking them back for the pionus. What do you think

The only pionus I can find in my area (without being scammed online) is a white capped pionus. Is there a behavioral difference? I've been really wanting a white capped anyways, but I wouldn't mind a bronze winged because they are gorgeous too. It's hard to decide but it's likely I'll get a white capped, should I expect any different?

Ok, so I know that quieter birds are not as talkative but... which of the (apartment friendly) birds do you think, after a good while of bonding, are more likely to pick up a few words?

Does anyone know of any breeders in scandinavia for this species? Getting one from the UK would also be an option for me.

Filming ends, Sokra (sp?) takes off bronze suit. Seriously though, Pionus can pass off as a Caique”s chill cousin. If there’s only 2 breeders in the I’ll wager we’re screwed here in Canada!

The bird looks cool!!! Does a Blue-headed Pionus have the same charackteristics like a bronze wing Pionus? Can you tell us something about your equipment? Like how many bird lamps you have , How to increase the humidity and many other things i dont know. How do you effectively keep your room clean so its less work for you. Thank you for your content:)

Hi, I absolutely love pionus birds and am considering getting one, but I am most of the time from 8 am to 5 pm away (not the weekends ofcourse), I will ofcourse immediately take him out of the cage as soon as I get home and make sure that he has a very large cage with lots of toys and foraging toys, is this still too long or is this ok for the pionus? Btw your account is really helping me with research!! Thank you in advance!

Pionus are great for salarymen. The more time a parrot spends in a cage, the larger the cage and more toys in there should be. That's the general rule of thumb.

Did you mean 4.5 and misspoke or did you put 4.5 in the video when you said 3.5 by accident? Is it 3.5 or 4.5? Does anyone know?
