I just converted my 6 speed c line explore to a 12 speed ( 11 13 17 21 ) cogset. Loving the lower gearing.

I have P line witz 4 speed. (11 13 17 21) with 54. My bike not is fast.... I want put the new 12 speed. I think that solution. More height... but i need win more velocity.

Really interesting. I fitted a riser bar + bar ends to my 2 speed just to make it up really steep hills around Sydney as it was just max effort to get up them, upper body strength required. Still have it this way, but this is food for thought. Thanks for the demonstrative video.

I really dislike the abrupt speed humps they have installed - hope your phone survived its fall at the end of the video! Great shame bikes (ridden or not!) have been banned on the deer park section since Covid. I used to enjoy the magnificent panorama visible from the high point,

good video; can’t wait to see the install video. I ride P line for sometime now and plan to upgrade to either of these options: 54T chainring with 4SP 11-13-17-21T cassette or 58T chainring with 5SP 11-13-16-19-23T cassette to make is a little easier on climbs and faster on descent.

I just swapped the last cog from 18 to 21 and kept all the original parts, including the chain and shifter. That gives me a lower gear for the hills.

We did toy with the idea of adding the 21 then indexing so you had the 4 bigger for hilly rides and the smaller ones for flat rides, but then changed the shifter to have 5. Yours sounds like a simple change! Thanks for watching.

Recommend swapping 3rd gear (15 to 17) which eases out the jump to 4th.

@@PeterGorrill exactly, I converted my T Line from 11/13/15/18T sprockets to 11/13/17/21T sprockets. Works like a charm and no need to change stock shifter or derailleur.

As always a joy to behold. Are you going to, or do you stock the upgrade kit? Namely the 5 sprocket cassette and 5 speed shifter?

I am running a 5 gear 11-24 cassette and a 47 front cog giving me the equivalent of a 6 speed -12% Brompon minus the heaviest gear. Works great in hilly Oslo, Norway

You can buy a hanger for the stock rear mech. I'm running a 11-13-16-20-24 cassette on mine :)

@@brilliantbikes No, I am not. I was considering one of the Brompton knockoffs, but decided on a cheap LT-WO setup. Not because it was the most affordable but because it works like a normal derailleur and doesn’t have to push a pulley wheel sideways. It folds beautifully and shifts really nice. The cassette is a hacked SRAM 9-speed running 11-14-18-21-24 sprockets. I’ve got a 218% gear range and 31-68 gear inches. A 6 speed Brompton is 29-88 gear inches

I'm in my late 50s, if my current 4sp T-line lasted as long as my old 2-sp Superlight I'll be in my 70s when I next need to change bikes. Yes you go faster with fewer gears and you're giving your whole body a resistive exercise - that slows the ageing process as your remaining muscle fibres forced to expand as fibres die. I am delaying changing to 5sp til I can't cope with 4sp, having used my 2sp til I couldn't cope. If i were to go to an easy option now I'd be using that added low gear more when older. All those going to 5sp now will be needing 7sp earlier. Sent from West Yorkshire, where it is hilly. I ride uphill til I can't then push. I push probably 20 mins total a month.

This is it. Get the gearing right on the P Line then you have a truly great folding bike. Its Bromptons major shortcoming. Especially if you live in a hilly area like I do..

I am so happy with 4 Gears P Line Electric. You Do Not feel any Hill climbs any more. Only downside: Pedaling frequency on speedy plane rides is way tool high when You want to go more speedy. Looking forward, if there will be an offer to convert to 12 speed some time (especially for the cases when I want to go for a ride without battery)

Interesting, looks like from the edits at the end it's a Shimano, you've broken down, I look forward to the video. My only issue is that I finally managee to get a CHPT3 last year and of course it's 4 gears. I live in a hilly place too, but also like going downhill fast, so soon out far too easily, so I'll be interested to see what the gearing is in comparison and what the weight advantage/disadvantage is? Is that your 4 speed Strava data from 06.03 Hannah? Good video as always 👍

Many thanks for watching! Adding the installation to this video just made it too long, so it should be next weeks, yes it’s a Shimano mountain bike cassette, we went from 11, 13, 15, 18 to 11, 13, 15, 18 and 21 so no impact on the smaller sprocket, but it did make a difference on the climbing.

Another great video. Makes me wonder why Brompton made it a 4 speed and not a 5 in the first place. Would this change affect the Brompton warranty?

Thanks for watching! I would assume that this would invalidate the warranty as Brompton are very clear that any modifications not authorised by them invalidates the warranty, sorry!

I’d love to see Brompton make a 6-speed derailleur to simply the drivetrain.

There is a video on poo tube about a Brompton that has been converted to a " Roloff 14 " speed hub . More gears than a Mack truck. I notice your tail light stopped flashing halfway through the second loop . Or did it fall off ? Anyway another nice video 👍 .

Thanks for watching and the comment We used to sell Birdy bikes - they did a 14 speed Rolhoff version - which we had (and rode) as a demo. It was just too many gears (way more than we felt necessary) The light is still there (thanks for checking) - seems we didn't charge the battery before the ride! (The Be-seen light have so far seemed great at "not falling off"!)

How complicated is it to move from 4s to 5s? When will you post the video? Thanks, Alex

Did you also try the brommieplus conversion to modify the brompton 4 speed shifter to 5? Whats your spacing for the sprockets, like 11 gears or still like 10 gears?

No we did not try brommieplus, TBH we have only had issues with their conversions. It is an 11 speed cassette Thanks for watching!

...well its always better to have greater transmition range... But for the really short uphills that we have over here I rarely go to the lowest hub-transmition of the C-6-gears... IIts also a bit of a preference: even at lower speed/ wattage I find higher resistence less annoying than higher pedaling rate...

Looking at the part where you are going up the Heartbreak Hill, it appears your hips are rocking from side to side which I thought indicated the saddle is too high?

Sadly, this doesn't tell me much. If you do the test and either maintain the same speed/cadence and measure the watt differences... or maintain the power and then measure the speed difference, you'll show the differences between the gearing. The test as done has shown that less power has meant less speed 😕

Actually, she commented on perceived effort, which is also a very useful piece of information which I find very helpful and am glad she includes it. Why perceived effort? Well, for example, if someone is starting a jogging program and wants to know fast to jog...we tell them to aim for huffing and puffing but at a level where they could still comfortably have a conversation with a jogging partner...obviously, the jogging speed for this level will increase as they get in better shape.

Thanks both for watching! The aim was to cycle gently, like riding to work, without working up a sweat, the point was exactly that on the 4 speed I had to go faster as I could not pedal any slower up the hills.

@brilliantbikes thanks for your thanks! But no need, we watch because you're generally informative and entertaining. I just wanted to feed back that as you have a power meter, cadence, and GPS (I think heart rate monitor too ?) Using these to create objective, repeatable data helps others (my partner and i) to decide what on earth we're going to do re our bromptons. They'll be one-off bike buys, with multi use situation from daily commute to occasional bike pack holidays and everything in between. So P vs C... 4,5,6,12, or some frankenstein groupset. The decision causes headaches. So, having your data led opinions helps greatly.
