Bromeliad "pup" propagation- aechmea fasciata/urn plant/how to/plant speak quick tips

If you have stumbled upon this particular video, but you'd like to know more in general about aechmea fasciata and how to grow and care for it, check out this video:
• BROMELIAD -easy housep...
This video is a supplemental how-to-propagate segment. At the time the original video was made, I didn't have any pups to propagate, so this was made a year or so later! Hope it helps!

Hello there! I just discovered your videos and I just love your channel! The fun spirit that you bring to the topic is, to me, SUCH an appropriate way to talk about plants :-) I love all the interesting details you share about leaves, name meanings, and seeds, going so much deeper than the plant profile. Now that some of my children are getting older, I can devote more time to learning about the plants I have loved for so long. I was hoping to find a good online teacher and there you were! Can't thank you enough! -- Cheryl

Oh my gosh. Thank you so much. I needed that today. It’s been hard keeping up with my channel and two little ones, but I’m trying! I’m so glad they are helpful to you and that you enjoy them.

@@plantspeak7117 I have a big family and am familiar with the rigors of having multiple young children WITH babies :-) I hope my praise put no pressure on you ;-) Consider my comment as thanks for what you've already done - not pressure to keep creating ;-) Take one day at a time, and if you need to, you go focus on your sweet little ones and don't worry about us out here in KZread Land...we can wait! Sending prayers for true blessing your way 🙂

Good video on basic pup separation. But how about a follow up with pertinent information like what soil is best for pups, lighting conditions, watering etc. I have a 3 and 1/2 yo aechmea that has delivered 10 pups in 2 years. I found #11 this morning as I ignored those who say toss the mom in the trash after a few pups. The 1st 8 are mostly doing well but some seem to be growing odd. The last 2 are better on a lower shelf. All in a south window. In orchid bark and perlite mix. I think I may have not watered soil enough as 1x month but have been putting distilled water in cups. Any suggestions. I can send pics but where. Thanks. I feel they should be well rooted by now. Tom B.

Hi there. In exact measurements I couldn’t say. I never give mine more than a splash from my small watering can when the soil is dry. Definitely lean towards dry rather than wet, and like I said in the original bromeliad video, they like to be misted. Mist often if you can. Also remember to make sure that you don’t “bury” that pup too deep, that’s probably the most common cause of rotting.

Hi there! Great question. It’s up to you. I like to cut it off right at the base inside. I have this in my other bromeliad video near the end. I like to think that it communicates to the plant to put most of its energy into creating more pups. My plant has made 4 pups so far since I cut my flower off last year. Good luck and have fun!!!
