I've experimented with texturing techniques over the past 20 years and have found the most consistency with spray textures. I have tried texturing polyester filler before it dries as well, but not on this dash. I always tell my customers it's likely they will still see a slight textural difference in the repaired area and never promise perfection.

@realsschevelle We do all of our repairs in house. But would not attempt a repair on a 68 442. It may repair but not last so we wouldn't agree to do it. I am unsure as to what route to go on that. As to the repair in the video, we did reinforce the crack from the underside, it is just edited out of the video. We have been repairing dashboards for over 30 years and have learned which ones to do and not do, and the best methods to add to the longevity of the repair.

@tubeofyoupaste Yes, the dash had a typical GM dash texture. I use a spray texture to add grain to my repair area. I only blend a the surrounding area and mix all colors by eye. After 20+ years of color matching I haven't come across a color I can't match within 95% accuracy.
@Mingosauto12 жыл бұрын
That would be for one crack, however I usually won't repair dashes with multiple cracks because they typically don't hold up very long. Multiple cracks indicate the dash material has become brittle so a repair may only be temporary.

No, it probably won't work well with multiple cracks. Usually dashes with a lot of cracking are old. While the repair looks good they will often crack again in another location. The dash repaired in the video was newer and when the crack is a result of damage instead of age the repairs hold up much better.

@judgelegacy: Those dashes had a tendency to crack as they aged. I typically don't recommend repairing them as they usually just crack again in the short term. The one I have in the video was a newer dash that had sustained damage from an auto accident. As far as yours goes I'd recommend a simple dash mat if you don't want to replace it. Replacing is very expensive and time consuming. It may not be worth it on an older truck.

@darked777 I guess it's just a matter of opinion. But after 18 years of doing these and similar repairs I've always felt I was helping my customers by saving them money, not by cheating them. I posted this video to show how the repairs are done and demonstrate they are made to last. I see charging around $100 on a repair instead of what could be over $1000 on a new dash and installation as a good service.
@JustinMingorunsogden14 жыл бұрын
@xXEltorroXx1 A repair on your dash is unlikely to last very long. Cracks that develop due to age and sun exposure are not very durable. A dealer would likely have a dash, but I would recommend contacting a body shop, since their labor rates are often lower, and they will be more likely to attempt to find a used dash.

As I've stated before, this video was not created as a tutorial on how to repair a dash. It was made to be a promotional video so our customers could see what type of work we could do. I've got no reason to lie about the products used. I'm not worried someone is going to 'steal' my customers as the repairs have much more to do with experience than product. The top filler was a polyester filler, but I don't know what brand it was. I wonder why the name calling though. You've got some issues.

shockwave259 I use a Cyanoacrylate to bond the crack then polyester and fiberglass fillers. I also reinforce the crack when possible from the backside, which was done in this instance.
It's an automotive filler used to fill in imperfections. I don't recall the brand name of the product I used on this particular dash.
Materials used? Bondo by chance?

I did use a polyester filler as a filler after using a fiberglass mesh and cyanoacrylate adhere and reinforce the crack.
20 years of experience. I use just 4 toners for most colors. A little of this a little of that...
Heeeey I have the exact same crack on same truck, even same color. Where are you guys located????
Funny. Must have been. Thanks!
Thanks! Unfortunately I'm not in a position to offer training.
How much for something like that? And does any body shop do that?
You are the only person in the US who knows how to fix this. And you are in utah?

+Mingosauto I fix these but they are a temporary fix as to usually will see the driver's side cracked even larger..has to been tweaked in there or something by GM..bad design by them despite the body style change was nice.
Simple 👌
I like SEM Surecoat products.
What did you use?

Javel Temple I use a combination of an adhesive and fiberglass mat on the underside to reinforce it as well as fillers on the top for cosmetic and strength. Then I use a spray texture and a SEM interior paint to color it.
Mingosauto can you explain what products you used please?

I use cyanoacrylate as a bonder and filler as well as fiberglass and polyester fillers depending on the application. I finish with SEM refinishing products.

The video was created as an advertising tool not as a tutorial. But here's some of what I used: Cyanoacrylate to bond the crack then polyester and fiberglass fillers over the top to fill. Then a texture spray and SEM paint for color.
haha! Indeed.
Whats the name of the texture you use?

Armando Arvizu Not that I use but it wouldn't surprise me if SEM sold a spray texture product.
I don't remember exactly the charge but it would have been under $200, probably $150 or so. Most body shops don't perform these types of repairs.
Sorry, I'm not in FL, I'm in Utah. I'm not sure of anyone in the FL area I could recommend. I'd Google and see what you find.
Step by Step direction would be great, or give me your address So I drive from Los Angeles to your place to fix my 1987 BMW 325es Dash.

Sorry, the video wasn't created to be a tutorial, rather an advertising piece. However i just created a step-by-step instruction list of how to fix this particular dash. If you'd like the list please email me mingos@mingosauto.com. I'm in Ogden UT so you may not want to drive all the way here to have a dash repaired...
I'm located in Ogden UT.

That's to bad. Would have you fix my dash if you where in Cali.
I have serched all the internet There is so many companys out there selling dash repair kits If its so simple when why can I not find a real company who will do the repair for me ?? Any help here I have a 1968 442 dash with cracks all over the place and they do not repo the pad Any help to point some one in the right direction?? P.S. your dash is going to crack again You must get some kind of support from the back Give it 2 months and ad what happend to the dash
@mypalrocco Have I done work for you or are you making a generalization? I wouldn't call saving people hundreds of dollars by doing a repair they asked me to do 'ripping them off'. If you feel I've specifically cheated you in some way please be more specific and I'd like to see what I can do.
Why go through all that...gmt is replacing all tahoe dashes for free....got mine done today
and thats how you cheat a costumer :)
swigeric: You're probably right. And I've tried to be helpful when others have asked me questions about what I use during repairs. But name calling because he didn't like the video or get the freebee he was hoping for is a bit juvenile to me. And I'm not sure how I would tag the videos so as to let people know they are promotional rather than instructional. Anyway, thank you for the compliment.
nvm
what up with george burgers comments? forgot to take his medicine I guess?
What exactly were you expecting in a 90 second video? A whole tutorial on how to repair a dash? Do you expect to learn how to build or drive a car in a car commercial? This video was created to show the type of repairs we are capable of and how they turn out. Tell me boxer002010, what exactly has been your contribution to society other than insulting the work of others? Sounds like a pretty pathetic life...
I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with a seriously cracked dash... I thank you for this video.
Thank you!
Thank you.
