Broan Downdraft Vent Fan Disaster... and Recovery
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is a fairly obscure topic, but my 20+ year-old Bosch downdraft cooktop ventilator fan quit working some time ago. It had stopped turning on the outside fan that was fed by a 10 inch duct so I decided it was time to replace the inside unit. Online shopping revealed that, dang, these things are expensive! Least expensive was the Broan 273603 which looked like it was pretty close to what I had, but it only came with an internal fan. I called Broan sales and they confirmed that it was not available for use with an external fan, so I decided to take the plunge anyway and this is the story of my trials and tribulations. Anyone contemplating purchasing this or a similar Broan model cooktop vent fan needs to be aware of the serious design flaw with the on-off switch.
Follow-up months later: This thing is working fine. We don't really use it a lot, but when we do, it's nice to have the continuously variable fan speed control rather than fixed speeds on the old Bosch downdraft ventilator.
Is a downdraft fan like this a good solution for venting your cooking area. There are better solutions, but we have radiant electric heat in the ceiling so we couldn't vent from above.

You are a lifesaver! Was pulling my hair out with that vent going up and down. Not sure I'd have figured out it without this video. Thanks again!

It's very rewarding that somebody found this useful. Thanks!
Excellent fix of a terrible design flaw! Also great to hear Christopher Walken narrate your video!

He cost a fortune!
You're right about this being obscure, I didn't think I'd find any info on my Broan downdraft fan, but you've got the exact same one I have. I've had mine apart many times with similar issues. The latest was the triangular steel plate that connects with the micro switch, I had to JBWeld some extensions on the end so it would create solid contact with the micro switch as it passed by. I hope you have many trouble free years of service with your fan...

For my continuous "up-down-up-down" issue, I also had to affix some extensions to the ends of the triangular plate in order to effectively engage the micro switches. The grease build-up on the plate ends certainly doesn't help to engage the switches and stop the rotation of the plate. But even after cleaning the grease off both the plate and the spring metal "diving board" switch levers, the rotation could only be consistently stopped by adding physical extensions of about 3 mm or so.
Thank you for saving hundreds $ not calling a technician to repair same problem. I have exact same model & had a same problem (not retracting) but I did not know what was wrong. I adjusted the switch to right place & height and it works perfectly. Thank you again.

I've always thought so...
Is there an option to have the vent come out of the backside of this unit and use a standard range?

I guess you could fabricate a duct to make that work.
