Most obvious running gag not mentioned is Abbi's roommate whom we've never seen but is mentioned repeatedly. Kinda like the neighbour in Home Improvement
Holy crap that Val Easter egg just shook me to my core.

they also have call backs to their original webisodes, check them out on youtube
the dress!! when there's a special occasion that calls for a dress Abby always ultimately wears that blue one !

Trevor Haynes i loved the episode where Abbi agrees to go on an actual date with Trey and she has Bevers help her pick an outfit. After going through several outfits she puts on the blue dress and is like "I don't know why I didn't just put this one on first." 😂 I'm so glad she either chose not to return it or missed the return date.

That's not really a joke, though. It's just a character who actually rewear clothes... they did that to be more like real women as opposed to characters who never wear the same thing twice.

Yes- the blue dress is definitely a running gag🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You missed the best Easter Egg of all time. In community "Beetlejuice" is said once in the first season, once in the second season and a third time in the third season and when it's said for a third time a character dressed as Beetlejuice walks by in the background.

Holy shit, Community. I will rewatch the entire thing for the third time and catch all these easter eggs, y'all.
Another running joke is how trainers at Solstice always go missing! Lol. I LOVE that show. Pure genius, alway puts me in a good mood.
This is one of my favorite shows and it's sad that I've had other guys tell me it's only a show for women. Sure, it's probably understood on a visceral level a lot more by women but funny is funny and this show is absolutely hilarious.

Funny, my brother actually is the one who introduced me to it!!!
i'm so glad they used arrested development for the running gags example. all time best lmao
You forgot the one when Abbi is pretending to be Ilana at the co-op and the lady who sets the tasks, asks Abbi to clean something in the bathroom
@jdis101

And she didn't do it because she's "a qwuan (queen)" 😂
I remember scream laughing when I realized the old lady on the train called Abbi "Val". 😂😂😂
Fuck, alright, alright. I'll watch broad city....
If you keep doing Broad City analysis videos...I wouldn't exactly hate it! 😁
This may be the best analysis of sitcom writing that I've ever seen. Nice job!
Actually "Val" is based on Judy Garland's character from Summer Stock, she's the one that sings "Get Happy". Not Liza Minelli lol

This under 10 minute youtube video is over analyzing something? I guess it's too much if you just want to enjoy comedy, but some people find this interesting. I get not caring much for this kind of content, but it hardly ruins your experience of comedy now does it?
@xenathcytrin202

+Matthew Barber (Honno) On top of it being really boring, it's a rather blatant advertisement for the show. They clearly are getting paid for this shit, and I don't think the one's paying for it got their money's worth. Good jokes and humor may make sense when analysed, but they stop making laughs once they are.
@bordem4090

Xenath Cytrin whats wrong with advertising the show? its not like its shameless advertising, and its obvious to me that some real honest thought went into this video, and you can tell that the narrator loves the show on a personal level too. Logically talking about why you find something funny is the best way to show appreciation and love for it.

+Matthew Barber (Honno) YEAH WTF! I thought the video was awesome. I would have never found the Easter eggs otherwise.
I love this show for this reason. It's one of the reason I also love community, always sunny and archer. They are very good a consistency, so lots of running gags, call backs, and Easter eggs.
Having watched every broad city epiode, I feel like this video was made for me. Also I have this massive crush on Abbi.

Me, I'm smitten by Ilana.
I don't think it's overexplained, it 's reminded me what a brilliant show that is!
Great video and explanation of the call backs, running gags and easter eggs. Another running gag is when Ilana makes a call in the middle of a conversation with a boss. The first was at the temp agency, second was with the rich lady who gave Ilana her clothes.
I loved learning about all of these comedy writing techniques. Delightfully revealing and gratifying-for all those times I thought, “I see what ya did there.”
One thing I love about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is that they have a ton of running gags and easter eggs too.
Man, lots of people dislike this analysis huh... well at least it's useful for a film student like me.
Thanks Vox!!! I'm a diehard fan and this is just what I needed :) informative yet entertaining

Great analysis of Broad City. Also Abi irl drew that map at the end, and draws the Broad City cartoon openings. She also drew that map for the B&B NYC guy.
what i like about the show is that the situations are ridiculous enough to seem surreal but like half the audience can say they been their or they would react to it in the same way, like jeremy her crush ends up like to be pegged, her reaction had everyone laugh.
This bitter ass commenters omfg Some people are actually interested in how comedy and screenplay writing works. Joke writing takes a little more than "that's funny I'll say this here" and for someone to take the time to show you how a favorite show of theirs crafted 3 different jokes using three different tools at the disposal of the writer, is pretty cool.
can you do more videos like this on broad city? I love that show.
Broad City Easter Egg: In S01E06 titled Stolen Phone, when Abbi and Ilana go to Central Park to find Abbi's phone, they get a caricature of Abbi carrying Ilana. Fast forward to S01E10 titled The Last Supper, Abbi carries Ilana out of the restaurant
Theres actually a few times in the series where old people notice Val, its pretty crazy how you dont notice it until you notice it.
I liked this video! I sometimes can't put my finger on why I love something-and here is the perfect explanation! I also appreciate the compilation of Kenneth clips!
the "receiving news" callback is my favorite one, oh my god it never fails to make me laugh
I knew all of these because I'm obsessed! Will definitely own the entire series when it ends.
I LOVE Broad City. Thanks for doing this, and all the other ones. You all rock!!
Interesting. I love how Easter Eggs and Callbacks are in some shows, but never thought Broad City had them.Certainly have to go back and see what I missed.
This was a very cool analysis! Can't wait for season 4
one more garol moment. Remember the episode when Ilana dressed up and asked her brother to tell if its good or not in the shot? Can't remember which one it is. And Elliot was like why can't you ask Jaime. Garol was right behind them.
Another Broad City video please! From fans in Tasmania
WOW!! I didn't even realize how well made Braod City was. #AWESOME
I never noticed a lot of these - god I really love Broad City. It's just perfection. I should rewatch it simply to find the easter eggs and callbacks I never noticed lol
if you don't want to watch it, then dont watch it much less comment on how much you hate the concept of being informed about something you preemptively rejected.
All these chumps saying "UGH we GET it already!" did not notice all these jokes the first time and are just trying to feel superior.
This just makes me want to watch the show again, and again, and again...
Mind blown. New appreciation for the show; thanks!
Thanks for the video. Just wanted to mention regarding the season two opener dopleganger call back: In the season one finale Illana runs down her bucket list and mentions that she wants to be Asian, which the callback doppleganger is.
LOVE this show. LOVE this analysis.
Lol amazing video! Broad City is so funny! And when you mentioned running gags, I immediately thought of Arrested Development. Then you showed a clip from it!
THIS IS MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
I didn't know this show! Sounds amazing, I'll look for it.
Even you missed some easter egs, but the timing was perfect. I hope this bit have some recognition, as well.
Thanks for this video, really enjoyed it. I love Broad City, die hard fan but did not pick up the 'Val' easter egg!
community, I think, is the best show to showcase running gags, callbacks and easter eggs. I feel like they build the show around it.
Can't wait until season 3!
Super useful! Thanks!
That Liza Minnelli inspired style is actually a direct recreation of her mother Judy garland. The song. Outfit, and dance is from the movie Summerstock. This video could have gone so much deeper into the show. Bingo Bronson, Lincolns jokes about removing all of his patients' teeth, Abbie's childhood pug references.
I want more of this!
I didn't know about this show before, but it looks awesome and just my style. Gotta check it out.
OMG I love this show so much.
That's a great video. I love Broad City! :)
I love Broad City thanks for making this video !
This is probably my favorite sitcom since Seinfeld. I can't stand the usual Burbank setup->punchline->setup->punchline formula.

LOVED the video!
I need 2 hours of this.
This show is so underrated it’s one of my favorites.
I love this show
Pretty sure archer is the king of the running joke. They use it constantly - Phrasing, read a book, danger zone - the list is almost endless.
This video has given me two shows to start watching!
There seems to be alot of hate for this video, just wanted to say, i enjoyed it and i've never seen the show. Anyways, love the vox channel :)
that opening was so funny
Mind Blown yet again.
I I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show... honestly the BEST comedy on TV since Martin Lawrence Show. this show is BRILLIANT
I've been a fan of _Broad City_ since literally day 1 (I watched the premiere episode live in 2014 and immediately fell in love) but seriously never caught the "Val" easter egg at 6:23. I would feel ashamed but I'm too busy having my mind blown.
great video !
3:37 OK, that line made me fucking LOL. Might have to give this show a chance.
Okay this definitely convinced me to watch

After community I really needed a similar show and it seems Broad City is that show
can we also talk about the many many nods to other shows and movies?!?! brilliant 😀
This should be called: Woman Learns What "Humor" Is, Now Explains Jokes to Everyone.
This is my fav show
I wonder where all the hate is coming from? As a non-viewer of the show, seeing what type of humor the writers are creating spark my interest to watch an episode. If you consider that advertisement, at least it wasn't don't superficially: "Hey! Check out this product we don't use ourselves!" Then again, I like watching people like Nerdwriter1. Seeing what happens behind-the-scenes, storyboards, the writer's desk, etc is interesting to me.

It's coming from the usual suspects, esp. when female or female centred/directed comedy. I.e ignorant, bored , lonely and or strangely bitter dude bros.
Broad city is brilliant
I LOVE THIS!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
North Brother Island was recently mentioned again in an episode from this current season too!
I'd love to see this same Vox episode about Venture Bros. It employs these techniques to an extraordinary degree, even in its artistic styles.
Ok so I watched this video yesterday thinking it was some pathetic advertising and it worked cause i tried watching the trailer for this show (they were running around nyc) and i found it extremely hilarious. I started season 1 around 6pm and now it's 2:30 am and i'm in mid season 2. I'm hooked and I wasn't even expecting it.
This is my favorite thing
Anything Broad City has my attention
anyone else notice when there is a montage of abbi and ilana in the bathroom doing various things ilana is wearing a black and blue dress identical to the one that went viral like a year ago and abbi at the same time is wearing the white and gold version of the dress
Gags and callbacks are different things. You can have a single gag or a running gag. You can have a single-layered callback or a multilayered callback. A callback does not necessarily become a gag (let alone a running one) just because it happens more than once.
I'm 4 years late... this is really cool. Y'all shoulda used "The Christina Guy" as a running gag example.
Surprised HIMYM wasn't mentioned once. They took such advantage of easter eggs, callbacks, AND running gags.
Cool video!
Normally I don't regret clicking on videos from this channel.
This Broadcity show looks hilarious!
