The English have had perhaps more impact on British, European and World History than any other nation. First a province of the Romans before becoming petty Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms, the story of the English is long and complex.

  • @Smithdog92

    not quite. Boudicca and Cartimandua were argueablly the most famous brythonic celts, and both from ''England'' the English have the same amount of Celtic ancestry as all other nations on the british isles. The differnce that i assume you're trying to put across is that the english have MORE aglo and saxon ancestry which is true, but many a welsh also have that also... orgins are origins. and everywhere in Briton was ''Brythonic'' Wales did a good job at preserving it's celtic ancestry in comparrison to the english, but that doesn't make the english any less celtic in blood. The english were heavily hit by christianisation, and the celts were listed as heathens, hence why the english abanonded most idealogies of celtic culture. the welsh irish and scottish hated the english, and rightly so, and mostly held on to their celtic cultures as a form of identity and sepratism, which still folds into modern practise despite being very impractical considering we basically all share the same ancesry more or less. @@michaelschudlak1432

    It's so weird that viking ships are so similar to phoenician ships. Anyone else ever noticed that?

  • @themammoth9051

    @themammoth9051

    Жыл бұрын

    Theres a theory that the nordic peoples took the initial designs fo their ship from Rome, given their close proximity to the Jutes of jutland. The theory goes over time they modified the designs until they became the iconic viking longboats known today. It would make sense then that they would resemble phoenician ships, given that the Romans initially copied Carthage(the Phoenician’s) ship designs.

  • @michael3088

    @@themammoth9051I can't remember where I read it but I there's a theory that whilst the Roman's were stationed in Germania they actually hired Germani to build the Roman's ships because they were very accomplished ship builders even during the time of the empire before Hermanic migration period.

    Have you not heard the recent news of the trace of Celtic DNA, according to that study the Celtic migration actually started in Asia Minor, then went thru the Balkans, across N Italy and the beachest of S France and along Spain, then up the W coast of France to England, Ireland, Scotland, & Belgium, than back to Austria, and later the one group went back home to Asia Minor - the Galatians. This is in direct opposition to the Halstadt center origin, which was the common belief before technology showed different.

    What is that placement of York at 3:05 ?! Edit: Also, the term 'Bretwalda' was probably fabricated by the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle during the later period and there is no evidence that it was used formally by any kings. The closest to such a title was that used by the Mercian kings Æthelbald and Offa, though some of the charters that name them as 'Rex Anglorum' are potentially later fabrications. The 'Rise of Wessex' is often disputed and it was probably a mix of factors that include the reforms of the early ninth century, the Viking invasions disrupting the established balance of power and the dynastic weakness of both Northumbria and Mercia. The decline of Mercia and Northumbria probably wasn't due to both of them wearing each other out, rather a lack of a defined system for succession that made disputes upon the deaths of monarchs common. Indeed, Mercia and Northumbria still controlled large amounts of territory and may have had the capability to defend against the Viking invasions had inter-dynastic trouble not weakened them. As such, there probably wasn't a "power vacuum" for Wessex to fill, but their weaknesses definitely led to the Viking invasions which ultimately led to Alfred's expansions and the dominance of Wessex. Nevertheless, great video, I really love your animation style!

    Not diluted. They actually ensured that all Anglo-Saxon systems of governence contined. If you look at the now redundent Magna Carter: it also shows that native law is important- a welshman must be tried by welsh laws regardless of the location of crime (same for Irish, Anglo-normans and scotts)
