Hi Guys, Britania Class 70004 William Shakespeare in the video, I noticed that they had removed the nameplates from the blinkers, What a shame, Brings a lump to my throat, The very last steam engine that i worked on as a fireman at Oxley MPD Wolverhampton 1965 We brought it from Crewe on a parcel train to Wolverhampton via Shrewsbury bound for Oxford. It was Ex Works just like Brand New, It caught every ones eye, A very exciting time for me, Beautiful Engine.

The British railways standard steam classes were very much s temporary stand in to fill.gaps in the system, notably the worn out inefficient nature of London suburban steam, in 1952 pollution had created the London smog/fog and a huge loss of life. Another major priority was the replacement of the inefficient, troublesome and overpowered Merchant Navy and Battle of Britain Pacific's were conceived with this idea in mind and draw more than expected from Bulleids designs. One of the better features of the standards was the Britannia s and Clans shared an identical frame,.body size and tenders etc rather like GM diesels, eg NZR DA -1425hp and Db 950hp. This concept could have been developed with a 2-8-2 with low axle weight and a 2-6-2 for mainline mail, parcels and fast freight sharing the same body, the French postwar US/Canadian 2-8-2 and German 2-6-2 the last West German standard design illustrate this.

Important to note that while the.concept of Britain's standard steam was.developed by the.left wing Labour.governmrnt of.1946-51which emphasised economic austerity and energy independence. The standard building programme was largely implemented by the Churchill Tory government. .
